Nurses are an observation system that detects signs and symptoms early on. Nurses activate and respond quickly to prevent adverse events and save patient's lives. Work related fatigue can wear away at a nurse's observance. This is why it is imperative to decrease nurse fatigue in the clinical setting. Nurses often feel a responsibility to be there for their patients, or at times there is no one available to relieve them from patient care, but studies show that we may be doing our patients a disservice. Healthcare organizations need to look closely and project staffing levels more accurately in an effort to decrease the amount of burnout that nurses are experiencing. Fatigue can also affect the health of nurses costing employers additional funds in workman's compensation. Lawyers are starting to take note of nurse fatigue when litigating cases of patient injuries. Medical errors, omission errors, 'call sick', high turnover rates and high litigation costs are all symptoms of work related fatigue. Mandatory overtime should not be used as a staffing strategy. It should only be used as a last recourse or in emergency situations. There is scientific evidence that supports that nurses should not be scheduled to work more than 12 hours in a twenty-four hour period (American Nurse 2012). All of the evidence will be presented to stakeholders in an effort to implement the proposed solution.
