Specifically, feedback from high school principals was sought concerning 1) the significance extracurricular participation has on student academic performance; 2) the leadership efforts on their campus to promote extracurricular participation as a means to support student academic performance; 3) the quantity of extracurricular activities offered on their campus to meet the needs of all students that seek to participate; and 4)the attributes gleaned from participating in extracurricular activities that have the most positive impact on students. Research indicates that extracurricular activities, specifically involvement in sports, has been cited as an indication of higher grades, higher educational aspirations, more internal locus of control and a higher self-concept (Feigin, 1994). Research also claims school administrators have the ability to create and model school norms that cultivate and integrate extracurricular involvement while emphasizing the importance of individual academic achievement (George, 2012). Participants in this study included 173 Texas high school principals representing schools of varying student enrollments. A questionnaire with two questions was issued to the subjects seeking their beliefs on the impact extracurricular participation has on students. Ultimately, three findings ascended as productive results from this research. First, the responses revealed that the principals contributing to this study firmly agreed that extracurricular participation has a positive impact on students. Second, the results from this study showed that the school leaders that participated believe that students receive the greatest impact through extracurricular participation by the relationships those students build and from learning the importance of intangibles such as teamwork and commitment. Lastly, the feedback determined that the perceptions of the principals that participated in the study were generally consistent in their views on the impact extracurricular participation has on students, regardless of the enrollment size of the campus they lead. These three findings could have significance by expanding the body of knowledge related to the potential solutions extracurricular participation presents high school principals when they explore strategies to create support systems for students on their campus.

Book excerpt: Little is known about the mechanisms by which extracurricular participation in high school influences educational attainment in young adulthood. Also limited is an understanding of the different types of extracurricular participation and how various activities may manifest within the relationship. The purpose of this study was to examine the link between high school extracurricular participation and educational attainment, with social capital, parental expectations, and academic achievement presented as mediators. Additionally, the present study will explore socioeconomic differences in the proposed relationships. The sample consisted of 5,239 ninth through twelfth graders from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Structural equation modeling (SEM) and multiple-group SEM were used to test pathways. Extracurricular participation was categorized into sports participation, non-sport participation, mixed participation (including both sport and non-sport), and no participation. Social capital, a latent factor, was measured by the latent variables of family and school capital. Various indicators of family closeness and inclusion of school culture from survey items operationalize social capital. Parental expectations, another latent factor, was measured by one survey indicator using the question of how disappointed would your resident father and mother be if you did not graduate from college. Academic achievement was measured by grade point average and calculated by the average of self-reported grades in four subjects: English, math, social studies, and science. Educational level attained used seven levels ranging from less than 8th grade to beyond a Bachelor degree. Gender, race, and parent education were also included as covariates. Social capital, parental expectations, and high school academic achievement were all shown to be mediators between high school extracurricular participation and educational attainment. However, social capital's impact on educational attainment was indirect through GPA rather than direct. Sport showed better capacity to strengthen social capital than non-sport. However, non-sport participants achieved higher high school GPA than sport participants. On average, students involved in both sport and non-sport activities had more positive effects on all model variables than students involved in sports only. Results for socioeconomic comparison showed some evidence for the benefit of sport participation directly on educational level for low-income students. Practically speaking, the conclusion of the study is that students need to participate in a combination of activities that include both sport and non-sport to improve their chances of educational attainment.

Surveys and community college data are used to collect quantitative data to address six research questions. Using Hossler and Gallagher0́9s (1987) College Choice Model and Hossler and Stage0́9s (1992) focus on the predisposition phase, the researcher studied the impact of participation in credit-based transition programs during the senior year in high school. Controlling for initial senior-year aspirations and participation in dual credit during the junior-year in high school along with other variables known to influence educational aspirations, final senior-year aspirations were compared for students participating in academic dual credit and CTE dual credit, and non-participants. Descriptive analysis of student characteristics by type of dual credit participation and non-participation is presented. Multiple linear regression including interaction effects for gender and race/ethnicity with participation in senior-year dual credit (academic dual credit or CTE dual credit) was used to determine if aspirations could be changed during the senior year while controlling for student characteristics, significant others0́9 influence, and extracurricular activates. Results showed female students and non-white students benefit most from participating in senior-year CTE dual credit. Parents0́9 education was a significant variable in the model. Interaction terms for income status with participation in senior-year dual credit were not significant variables in the model. Results provide insights into the relationship of student participation in credit-based transition courses and student educational aspirations which is important to policy makers, education professionals, parents, and students.

Research focused on participation in these activities and its possible link to various labor market outcomes tests whether extracurricular activities support one of the basic goals of education: to prepare a skilled labor force. This study examines the implications of participating in extracurricular activities during high school for a very specific population: high school graduates who do not immediately enroll in any type of post secondary education after high school. Within this population, extracurricular participants and non-participants are compared, on their likelihoods of being employed the year after finishing high school. This relationship is subdivided by five types of extracurricular activities a student participated in, specifically: athletics, leadership, arts, clubs, and academics activities. Of the five activities studied in this paper, participation in leadership extracurriculars is associated with the highest likelihood of being employed directly after completing high school for among these students. Participation in athletic extracurricular activities is negatively related to being employed directly after graduation for these students.
