Book excerpt: When learning a second language, learners face several challenges: learning new syntactic structures and vocabulary and learning how to produce the phonology and phonetics of the language they are learning. Focusing on the production of English by native Dutch speakers, the production of English vowels by Dutch-English bilinguals and the transfer of the final- consonant devoicing present in Dutch (but not in English) to English were examined. The study specifically focused on their ability to distinguish the vowels /æ/ (as in cat) and /ɛ/ (as in red) and the consonants /t/ and /d/ in the word-final position. The vowel /æ/ is not present in the Dutch vowel inventory and is often produced as /ɛ/ by Dutch-English bilinguals. Dutch has final-consonant devoicing, meaning that regardless of a word's spelling, the final consonant is always produced voiceless. In our study, we examined how Dutch-English bilinguals produce English vowels and whether they transfer the final-consonant devoicing when speaking English, and whether this causes misperception. Using a word-matching task, Dutch-English bilingual participant pairs interchangeably produced and perceived highly confusable English words (bad, bat, bed, bet, bid, bit). One participant said the word out loud, while the other chose the word they heard their partner say out of two potential answers. Acoustic analysis was conducted to measure the vowel, consonant closure, stop release durations, and formant values (F1 and F2) of the vowels. Out of all word pairs presented in the task, results showed the highest percentage of misperceptions in the bid -- bit word pair due to final-consonant devoicing, as well as misperceptions of words containing the /æ/ -- /ɛ/ contrast (e.g., bet -- bat and bad -- bed), indicating that these speech sounds were not always distinguished clearly in production. Analyses of consonant closure and stop release durations showed that words with /d/ as the final consonant were often produced more similarly to the duration of /t/, indicating that the Dutch-English bilinguals indeed devoiced the final consonant. On average, the vowel length of bad was significantly longer than the vowel duration in the other stimuli, and the difference between the vowel duration of bat and bet in the Dutch- English bilinguals' production was closer in duration than native English productions of these words observed in previous research. Additionally, the formant values of the Dutch-English bilinguals' productions of /æ/ had a great amount of spread and overlapped with the formant values of /ɛ/, indicating that these vowels were produced similarly spectrally. Although perception accuracy was generally high among all participants, the /æ/ -- /ɛ/ contrast and /d/ -- /t/ final-consonant contrast led to misperceptions of words containing these speech sounds. These findings show that Dutch-English bilinguals transfer features of their native Dutch phonetic inventory to English and provide support that this can lead to misperceptions of certain speech sounds.

Its primary goal is to investigate the role of native (Russian) phonology in the acquisition of new acoustic cues - specifically vowel duration and spectral differences - in a second language (English). Literature suggests it is more difficult to acquire more complex vowel systems in a second language; for second language learners of English, the tense/lax contrast, as well as other contrasts between vowels adjacent in the vowel space and distinguished via both spectral and duration cues, are particularly challenging, and non-native speakers, including native speakers of Russian, differ from natives by attuning more to duration than spectral cues. However, many unanswered questions remain about the role of cue weighting in adults' acquisition of vowel systems with larger inventories in second languages. Despite evidence that acquisition patterns vary not only by first language but also by contrast, few studies that examine this issue study more than one vowel pair (typically /i - ɪ/), and very few study native-Russian learners of English. The present dissertation addresses this understudied language pairing and examines both perception and production of four vowel contrasts, focusing on one specific regional variety of American English. While native English talkers in the present study made a perceptible duration distinction between all four contrasts tested, the Russian-English bilinguals did so only between the high vowel pairs, and their accuracy varied by vowel, contrast, and individual in both perception and production. Perception and production ability correlated on some vowels and contrasts, with perception ability generally exceeding production ability; however, due to the difficulty of comparing perception and production accuracy, it is not possible to conclude that these data offer strong support for the Perception-Production link. The Russian-English bilinguals did not appear to be acquiring a local variety, although it is possible that some talkers with low AOA, high LOR, and extensive cultural experience (including education) in Georgia may have acquired a local rather than generalized standard.

The English and Spanish vowel systems differ in many ways creating more difficulty in the pronunciation of English vowels by bilingual speakers. The Spanish vowel system contains only five vowels spaced out across the vowel space whereas the English vowel system contains fourteen vowels, with a more "cramped" vowel space. This creates difficulty with proper pronunciation of vowels. There are many additional factors that can influence the ability to produce English vowels including the age of exposure of the second language (or whether the individual is an early or late bilingual), the person's environment, etc. This literature review examines and compares the vowel reduction and deletion patterns between different variables including age of L2 acquisition, vowel duration, vowel qualities like backness, height, etc., word placement of the vowel, word condition, etc. The compiled research in this literature review studies these variables and has shown that the early and late bilingual English speakers had much different vowel production and reduction patterns. By evaluating these populations, speech-language pathologists are able to better understand the differing speech patterns and accents that are produced by non-native English speakers. Further research should be conducted to study and understand other parts of Spanish-English bilingual speech.

Many may experience difficulty in understanding AE. Accurate perception of AE vowels is important because vowels carry a large part of the speech signal (Kewley-Port, Burkle, & Lee, 2007). The relationship between native language and L2 vowel inventories causes some vowels to be more difficult to perceive accurately than others (Best & Tyler, 2007). The present study examined the patterns with which early and late Spanish-English bilingual adults assimilate AE vowels to their native vowel inventory and the accuracy with which they discriminate and identify the vowels. Early bilingual listeners demonstrated similar perceptual assimilation patterns to late bilingual listeners, but judged AE vowels as less Spanish sounding than did late learners. Additionally, discrimination and identification accuracy of L2 vowels improved with early age of L2 acquisition.

This means that every linguistic branch, from morphology and phonology to syntax and semantics is subject to change. In North American English, pronunciation is the most active arena for language change. In the last few decades, researchers have identified various pronunciation changes that are in progress in different parts of the United States (Gordon 2001: 2-3). Towards the end of the 20th century, William Labov, an American linguist, overruled the methods of traditional dialectology depending on lexical variation and claimed that "regional diversity is increasing as a result of opposing movements within vowel systems" (Labov, Ash & Boberg 2005: 18). In other words, the divergent developments in American English dialects are attributable to the operation of chain shifts moving the phonetic values of vowels in radically different directions. In these complex rotations, whole sets or subsystems of vowels reverse their relative positions to each other, whereby phones representing one phoneme in one dialect represent an entirely different phoneme in another (Labov 1991: 3).

Book excerpt: This study examined the voice onset time (VOT) of Greek and English voiceless stops (/p/, /t/, /k/) as produced by 20 Greek/English. The participants read initially-stressed CVCV words in Greek and English carrier phrases and three English sentences that were evaluated for accentedness. Analyses indicated that the bilinguals produced English VOTs that were longer than those of Greek and shorter than those of English monolinguals. They distinguished stop categories in terms of VOT across languages, but not in all vowel environments. Although English and Greek VOTs were correlated, English VOT values for /p/ and /t/ did not differ significantly, while the Greek values did. Accentedness ratings were correlated with age of learning English , chronological age and length of residence in Canada , but not with English VOTs. These findings indicate that the relationship between L1 and L2 language systems is bidirectional and more complicated than has been portrayed so far.
