Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A true cinematic pioneer, Fritz Lang began his film career as a writer and director of silent movies in Germany between the World Wars. His early films, such as Dr. Mabuse, Metropolis, and his first "talkie," "M", have become classics, and positioned him as a leading light in the German film industry in the early 1930s. Fleeing from the Nazis in 1933, Lang went to Hollywood, where he earned legendary status for such films as Man Hunt, The Big Heat, and While the City Sleeps, movies that did much to define the look of film noir. His influence on such filmmakers as Alfred Hitchcock, Michael Powell, and others is unmistakable. This major retrospective book is copiously illustrated with film stills and photographs from his films as well as from his private life. It includes detailed information about his life and work in both Berlin and Hollywood, and will be the most extensive consideration of his oeuvre to date.
Book Synopsis Principles of Copyright Law - Cases and Materials by :
Download or read book Principles of Copyright Law - Cases and Materials written by and published by WIPO. This book was released on 2002 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication aims to provide a valuable and practical tool for those countries where court decisions in the copyright domain are scarce or non-existent - either because copyright law is a fairly new phenomenon or because legislation has not been extensively applied. To that effect, this publication examines a carefully selected number of court decisions illustrating general principles of copyright law, drawn from common law, civil law and the legislative systems of Arab countries. As the basic principles illustrated here are to a large extent commonly shared, many of the cases presented have a wider relevance, going beyond the confines of the legal system of which they form a part.

Book Synopsis Mission & Science by : Carine Dujardin
Download or read book Mission & Science written by Carine Dujardin and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science as an instrument to justify religious missions in secular society The relationship between religion and science is complex and continues to be a topical issue. However, it is seldom zoomed in on from both Protestant andCatholic perspectives. By doing so the contributing authors in this collection gain new insights into the origin and development of missiology. Missiology is described in this book as a “project of modernity,” a contemporary form of apologetics. “Scientific apologetics” was the way to justify missions in a society that was rapidly becoming secularized. Mission & Sciencedeals with the interaction between new scientific disciplines (historiography, geography, ethnology, anthropology, linguistics) and new scientific insights (Darwin’s evolutionary theory, heliocentrism), as well as the role of the papacy and what inspired missionary practice (first in China and the Far East and later in Africa). The renewed missiology has in turn influenced the missionary practice of the twentieth century, guided by apostolic policy. Some “missionary scholars” have even had a significant influence on the scientific discourse of their time.

Book Synopsis Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States by : National Research Council
Download or read book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.
Download or read book Marcel Pagnol written by Brett Bowles and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though long ignored or dismissed by film critics and scholars, Marcel Pagnol (1895-1974) was among the most influential auteurs of his era. This comprehensive overview of Pagnol’s career, the first ever published in English, highlights his unique place in French cinema as a self-sufficient writer-producer-director and his contribution to the long-term evolution of filmmaking in a broader European context. In addition to reassessing the converted playwright’s controversial prioritisation of speech over image, the book juxtaposes Pagnol’s sunny rural melodramas with the dark, urban variety of poetic realism practised by influential peers such as Jean Renoir and Marcel Carné. In his penchant for outdoor location shooting and ethnographic authenticity, as well as his stubborn attachment to independent, artisanal production values, Pagnol served as a precursor to the French New Wave and Italian Neo-Realism, inspiring the likes of Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Vittorio De Sica, and Roberto Rossellini.

Book Synopsis Godard On Godard by : Jean-luc Godard
Download or read book Godard On Godard written by Jean-luc Godard and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 1986-03-22 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean-Luc Godard, like many of his European contemporaries, came to filmmaking through film criticism. This collection of essays and interviews, ranging from his early efforts for La Gazette du Cinéma to his later writings for Cahiers du Cinéma, reflects his dazzling intelligence, biting wit, maddening judgments, and complete unpredictability. In writing about Hitchcock, Welles, Bergman, Truffaut, Bresson, and Renoir, Godard is also writing about himself-his own experiments, obsessions, discoveries. This book offers evidence that he may be even more original as a thinker about film than as a director. Covering the period of 1950-1967, the years of Breathless, A Woman Is a Woman, My Life to Live, Alphaville, La Chinoise, and Weekend, this book of writings is an important document and a fascinating study of a vital stage in Godard's career. With commentary by Tom Milne and Richard Roud, and an extensive new foreword by Annette Michelson that reassesses Godard in light of his later films, here is an outrageous self-portrait by a director who, even now, continues to amaze and bedevil, and to chart new directions for cinema and for critical thought about its history.

Book Synopsis Walker Evans & Dan Graham : exposition Rotterdam, 1992, Marseille, Musée Cantini, Münster, Westfalisches Landesmuseum, 1993, New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, 1994 by : Jean-François Chevrier
Download or read book Walker Evans & Dan Graham : exposition Rotterdam, 1992, Marseille, Musée Cantini, Münster, Westfalisches Landesmuseum, 1993, New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, 1994 written by Jean-François Chevrier and published by Witte de with Center for Contemporary Art. This book was released on 1992 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
