Download or read book Adrian Frutiger – Typefaces written by Heidrun Osterer and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Nothing Happens by : Ivone Margulies
Download or read book Nothing Happens written by Ivone Margulies and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through films that alternate between containment, order, and symmetry on the one hand, and obsession, explosiveness, and a lack of control on the other, Chantal Akerman has gained a reputation as one of the most significant filmmakers working today. Her 1975 film Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles is widely regarded as the most important feminist film of that decade. In Nothing Happens, Ivone Margulies presents the first comprehensive study of this influential avant-garde Belgian filmmaker. Margulies grounds her critical analysis in detailed discussions of Akerman's work--from Saute ma ville, a 13-minute black-and-white film made in 1968, through Jeanne Dielman and Je tu il elle to the present. Focusing on the real-time representation of a woman's everyday experience in Jeanne Dielman, Margulies brings the history of social and progressive realism and the filmmaker's work into perspective. Pursuing two different but related lines of inquiry, she investigates an interest in the everyday that stretches from postwar neorealist cinema to the feminist rewriting of women's history in the seventies. She then shows how Akerman's "corporeal cinema" is informed by both American experiments with performance and duration and the layerings present in works by European modernists Bresson, Rohmer, and Dreyer. This analysis revises the tired opposition between realism and modernism in the cinema, defines Akerman's minimal-hyperrealist aesthetics in contrast to Godard's anti-illusionism, and reveals the inadequacies of popular characterizations of Akerman's films as either simply modernist or feminist. An essential book for students of Chantal Akerman's work, Nothing Happens will also interest international film critics and scholars, filmmakers, art historians, and all readers concerned with feminist film theory.

Book Synopsis Almodóvar on Almodóvar by : Pedro Almodovar
Download or read book Almodóvar on Almodóvar written by Pedro Almodovar and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2007-02-20 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pedro Almodóvar's films—such as Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, All About My Mother, and Talk to Her, to name a few—are colorful and deeply felt celebrations of life and love. The influence of these works, which have been feted around the world, has been immense, and Almodóvar on Almodóvar tells the personal story of the man and his wonderfully vivid and outrageous vision. Almodóvar came of age during an austere time in rural Spain: the 1950s, the age of the Cold War, of mambo, of Balenciaga, of the Korean War, of the Hungarian Revolution, of the death of Stalin. But none of these events bore any impact on his village. In response, Almodóvar proceeded to carve for himself a unique niche in contemporary cinema with films bursting with vibrant energy and vivid, primary colors—each frame saturated with passions, releasing a pure, visual, visceral emotion. In these frank and passionate conversations, Almodóvar discusses his astonishing life and career with a humor that is distinctly his own.
Download or read book Woody written by Julian Fox and published by Overlook Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Other books have been written about Woody Allen; none has yet managed fully to interpret him. This is the task Julian Fox sets for himself and succeeds at resoundingly, writing eruditely about all the films, and setting forth the broad influences of the Woody Allen style - everything from Chekhov to Bergman to Martha Graham. He traces Woody Allen's idiosyncratic progress from the early anarchic satires like What's Up Tiger Lily and Casino Royale to the astounding run of hits in the 70s and 80s - Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors - through the 90s and such diverse projects such as Husbands and Wives, Bullets Over Broadway and Mighty Aphrodite, revealing what make Woody Allen - hip, urban, neurotic successor to Chapman, Keaton and the Marx Brothers - our most exciting and original filmmaker.
