Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrines of Heathen Philosophy, Compared With Those of Revelation Though few persons have written more than myself to controvert the established principles of each of your churches, I consider the articles in which we all agree as of infinitely more moment than those with respect to which we differ. We all believe in the being, the perfections, the universal providence, and the righteous moral government of God, as the maker and sovereign disposer of all things. Whatever we may think of the person of Christ, we all believe that his doctrine is divine, and his precepts obligatory upon all. We all believe in his miracles, his death, his resurrection, and his ascension, as related in the books of the New Testament. We also all believe that he will come again, to raise all the dead, to judge the world, and to give to every man according to his works; and these are all the articles of faith that can have any considerable influence on the lives and conduct of men. Book excerpt: To many people both inside the Chruch and outside it--what goes on in the Church is either routine or irrelevant. Consequently, what the Church has to say is not very meaningful. Why should people listen to what the Church has to preach and think about it? No one is better qualified to answer this question than Professor Emil Brunner. Dr. Brunner is a teacher of theology in the University at Zurich, Switzerland, and one of the clearest and most constructive religious thinkers of our day. Any book of his is an event because he succeeds so well in combining sound learning with persuasive and readable analysis, and because he is thoroughly acquainted with both American and Continental ways of thinking. In this book, Dr. Brunner sets the claim of the widespread intellectual relativism of contemporary culture. He seeks to show that both Catholic and secular thought misunderstand the relations between reason and revelation because revelation is always subordinated to reason. Brunner reverses the position. He goes back to the Bible and the Reformers and maintains that when reason is subordinated to revelation the preaching of the Gospel is at once true to itself and intelligible. Here is a forceful and thorough volume which helps both believers and unbelievers to understand themselves. -Publisher

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reason or Revelation, or the Religion, Philosophy, and Civilisation of the Ancient Heathen, Contrasted With Christianity and Its Legitimate Consequences Christianity, as the only system that is competent to elevate the world, and which embodies in it all the elements of true religion, true morals, true philosophy, and true civilisation. And by advocating Christianity, it is no: to sermonise, but to take up the system in its principles and opera tions, and compare and contrast it with all other systems. There is a prevailing misconception of it - a one-sided view of its principles and ten dencies, which amounts to an error - by which it is not extended to its per fect work but circumscribed and contracted in its design and powers. It is not sufficiently viewed as a complete, divinely given system, for the restoration and government of the world. It is looked at too Often solely as teaching the fact of a better world, and how we may attain it - and that is a great and most important part - but it is not confined to that, for it does not only simply inculcate our devotional Obligations, but it embraces every thing that relates to our temporal state and social improve ment. It contains the true principles Of political economy, and of all legislative science and gives the grand directions for the amelioration of the physical world, and the education, refinement, and happiness of man. It is the moral lever for upheaving the earth, and all that it inhabit, from every existing false and ruinous position. As the curse was universal on nature, - brute, and man, Christianity is universal, as the universal antidote. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why the title "Heresies of a Heathen?" Because whether you're considered a member of the club, or you've been cast out and stoned with self-righteous condemnations like 'heathen, ' whether your understanding of God is orthodox and commonly accepted, or you're the 'spiritual but not religious' type like me who speaks of the spiritual in 'heresies, ' you can never actually be cast out of God's company, for God's company is absolutely inclusive. The truth is that even the 'heathen' thinking 'heretically' can offer insights into the spiritual (or 'metaphysical') nature of existence and, in fact, some argue that it requires the ability to look outside of conventional lines oppressively drawn to control us in order to best see God. This has, in fact, been my own experience, as God has led me to truths which can never belong to any one religion or group of people, and I'm offended by the attempt of religion to control divinity. In my own quest to understand the nature of divinity, I've learned of God to be the eternal, conscious energy essential to all people, places and things, including spacetime and matter and all forms of life manifested by God's divine force, regardless of grouping and label. In truth, we all exist within God, as mortal manifestations of God's immortal essence, for the purpose of infinite perspectives upon and experiences of existence. We're all finitely-formed facets of God's infinite nature, ever adapting in partnership with the material realm to be ceaselessly remade in God's limitless image, an image unbound by human-centric form. In the truths to which God has led and continues to gently coax me to convey to as many forms as I can muster, I've found my own mode of ministry, and I know in my heart that such a ministry needs no official religion or institutional sanction, for it's the heart itself that truly conveys God's will. I believe religion to perform many social and moral services, to offer community and hope to the lonely and the lost, and that its manifold manuscripts born through the ages, across the endless multitudes of culture and perspective, contain countless laudable principles of inestimable value to life. At the same time I know that, due to its historical development intertwined with State and Empire, religion is replete with irrevocable issues; with hierarchies, idolatries, mind-controlling propaganda and the implicit, and sometimes explicit, denial of empowering disciplines, like science and philosophy, and their emancipating, elucidating, edifying power. I also believe that, owing to that same history and its contentions with contradicting religions, religion in general tends to be divisive, leading to discord and hatred, thereby denying humanity's greatest unifying potential. Only a purer search for Spirit (aka 'God') that learns from and is open to incorporating the insights of all the great sages of past and present is best positioned to uncover the deepest spiritual truths and tear down the divides denying the realization of humanity's fullest form. The following pages were written concurrent with my own spiritual search, inspired by the least imperially-altered remnants of the testaments to the life and lessons of the most famous spiritual sage of all time; the 'Gnostic Gospels' which weren't incorporated into the religion that Empire made of his posthumous following. Herein his lessons have been reconceived in a manner purified of all the aforementioned divisive and disempowering aspects of religion, replaced with the empowerment of moral, spiritual and philosophical principles and insights of the greatest possible application and value.

Book excerpt: What we propose doing in this book, namely, to make a serious attempt to assist some of those who have inhaled the poisonous fumes of infidelity and been left in a state of mental indecision concerning sacred things. Our principal object will be to set forth some of the numerous indications that the Bible is something far superior to any human production, and give some of the rules which require to be heeded if the Scriptures are to be properly interpreted; and though their scope will go beyond the general title of ""Divine revelation,"" yet they will complement and complete the earlier ones.
