Book excerpt: In 2008 the USCCB published a curriculum framework for high school religious education curricula entitled Doctrinal Elements of Curriculum Framework for the Development of Catechetical Materials for Young People of High School Age (Framework). Since the Framework's release, publishers have adapted its doctrinal tenants to textbooks and catechetical materials for use within high schools and parishes. Those textbooks and catechetical materials that the USCCB have found to be in conformity with the teachings of the Catechism of the Catholic Church are in the process of being adopted and integrated into the religious education curricula of Catholic high schools across the country. Since its publication, little research has been conducted to find out how curriculum based on it has being implemented, and where religion teachers draw inspiration for developing their instructional methods with which to teach its contents. This multiple case study investigation provides a rich description of the instructional methodologies Catholic high school religion teachers use to implement the Framework and seeks to uncover whether there is any commonality among the cases. The study compares both the instructional methods and the influences religion teachers attribute for developing instructional methods. Three specific influences are examined in this study: formal education, professional development, and school environment. The instructional methods observed during this study were analyzed drawing from both catechetical and educational scholarship, and when compared across cases, reflect that the most commonly observed instructional methods rely on technology, and utilize group learning or human experience. In order to develop these instructional methods religion teachers relied primarily on their formal education. As a result, this study concludes that religion teacher participants contribute a wealth of resources for implementing the Framework, but could be better supported through formal education designed specifically to support the Framework's overarching goals.

By examining this framework, I identify the concepts and methodology privileged by the Roman Catholic hierarchy and evaluate their efficacy in light of current insights in postmodern curriculum development. This study traces the twelve year timeline approaching the document's pub-lication, sociological research data which supported the USCCB's decision to produce the Framework, and pre-Vatican II text series upon which the framework has been based. It critiques the framework against the Tradition of the Catholic Church in the U.S. from 1640 to the present, the Magisterial documents of the universal and local Church on education, and Holy Scripture. It also examines the framework against a postmodern description of the student consumers of the framework and present work in postmodern curriculum development. Scpope and Sequence Besides providing doctrinal elements for a curriculum, the Framework also strongly suggests a sequence to shape a four-year, eight-semester course of catechetical studies. There are six coresemester-length courses that the bishops strongly recommend be offered in the order they appear in the Framework. Those courses are: I. The Revelation of Jesus Christ in Scripture The Scriptures trace the coming of Jesus, the Christ. II. Who Is Jesus Christ? Jesus is the ultimate revelation from God. III. The Mission of Jesus Christ (The Paschal Mystery) Our redemption only comes in and through Jesus. IV. Jesus Christ Continues the Mission in the Church. The Church is the Body of Christ where we meet Jesus today. V. Sacraments as Privileged Encounters with Jesus Christ We can encounter Christ in a full and complete way in the Sacraments. VI. Life in Jesus Christ There are moral principles that govern the life of Christ's disciples. In addition five possible elective courses appear in this Framework as options for the other two semesters. Book excerpt: In 2007 the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) published Doctrinal Elements of a Curriculum Framework for the Development of Catechetical Materials for Young People of High School Age (Framework), which outlined doctrinal material for the textbooks in all Catholic high school religion courses. While texts are evaluated by the USCCB for their conformity with the content for each course, publishers develop instructional approaches for catechesis. This study examined the extent to which eight chapters of eight current high school religion textbooks incorporate normative methodologies for catechesis and utilize recognized strategies for cognitive and affective learning. Nine criteria for catechetical methodology were synthesized from the National Directory for Catechesis (NDC). Bloom's cognitive taxonomy was used to classify cognitive learning anticipated in each chapter's objectives, questions, activities, and test. Finally, a modified version of Krathwohl's affective taxonomy identified the extent to which these chapters invited students to demonstrate affective learning of the material. The author and two professionals working in catechetical education used the procedure independently to analyze the same selected chapters to establish the reliability of the results. The chapters varied considerably in how thoroughly they incorporated the USCCB's elements of methodology for catechesis. Overall, fewer than half of the catechetical methodologies applicable to a high school religion course were incorporated into every chapter and one-third of the methodologies were completely omitted from five of the chapters. Inclusion rates for inductive and deductive methodology were particularly noteworthy because their emphasis ranged among the chapters: half of the chapters balance their inclusion rates for deductive and inductive methodologies, while the other four chapters primarily rely on deductive methodology. The results showed an emphasis on lower-order cognitive learning and missed opportunities to invite students' affective learning. Additionally, the complexity of cognitive learning expected from students and the frequency of invitations to demonstrate affective learning differ significantly among the chapters, even though they cover the same doctrinal topics. The findings suggest that publishers can pay more attention to fully incorporate the USCCB's principles for catechetical methodology and a variety of pedagogies for affective and cognitive learning into high school religion textbooks.
