Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doctor in Medicine and Other Papers on Professional Subjects A Grave question must ere long present itself for the consideration of the medical profession of this country, on the solution of which will depend its character at home and its position abroad, viz., By what title shall a practitioner of legitimate medicine be recognized? What shall constitute a Doctor in Medicine? Hitherto it has been deemed sufficient that an applicant for admission to a regularly organized society should present credentials showing him to be a graduate of a chartered medical college, or a licentiate of a County or State medical society. But the ease with which charters are now obtained from State Legislatures for every nondescript association of men, whether for proper or improper purposes, has effectually broken down these safeguards to respectability, and thrown widely open the field of medicine to every one who desires to enter and profit thereby. With the single and most honorable exception of the State of North Carolina, we are not aware that any State has laws protecting the domain of scientific medicine from the intrusion of lawless adventurers. Book excerpt: Women are entering medical school in equal numbers as men, yet still face unique challenges in a profession where, overall, male physicians outnumber female physicians 3 to 1. Women in medicine also face decisions such as when to have a child during training and often struggle with work-life balance. This book features real stories and advice from mothers in medicine at all stages of training from medical student to practicing physician and addresses the topics that shape the lives, joys, and challenges of women in medicine today. The book is based on the best posts and wisdom shared on the Mothers in Medicine blog, which was established in 2008 by the editor and has published over 1500 posts and has over 4.8 million page views to date. The book is organized by themes that are unique to the physician-mother: career decisions, having children during training, navigating life challenges, practice issues, and work-life balance. Each chapter features an excerpt from the blog followed by an honest discussion of the key considerations, guidelines, and tips as related to each topic in the conversational, personal tone of the blog. The book concludes with a chapter that features the most popular questions posted on the Mothers in Medicine blog and a summary of the responses received from the community of readers. Mothers in Medicine: Career, Practice, and Life Lessons Learned is a valuable and contemporary resource for pre-medical students, medical students, residents, and physicians.

It is an excellent introductory text for doctors and other health professionals starting out in their careers as well as offering teaching tips and new perspectives for busy practitioners wishing to keep abreast of developments in medical education. The ABC emphasises the teacher’s role as a facilitator of learning rather than a transmitter of knowledge. It is designed to be practical and accessible and will support good teachers in becoming even better at what they do. Each chapter seeks to explain how different aspects of learning and assessment work (the theory) as well as providing descriptions of educational approaches that work (the practice). This fully updated new edition features core medical education topics such as course design, assessment, learning in groups, feedback, and the creation of learning materials. It also includes invaluable new chapters that address many of the challenges of medical education such as dealing with students in difficulty, the teaching of professionalism in clinical settings, and how to support the development of teachers. Together, these chapters represent an authoritative guide written by a team of educational experts of international renown and is suitable for all health professional educators.
