I shouldn't be at all surprised if be robbed a plantation, or even a bank. You see, they ain't much down there for police, and things was pretty well turned topsy-turvy at the end. If he gave way, when by himself, to the bitter feelings and fancies his memory and heart brought vividly to his mind, he never for any length of time indulged in them, and always strove in the end to surmount the strong sense of his own unhappiness which they awakened there. Society never saw Sidney otherwise than cheerful, and had any one taken his most intimate friends' opinion of him, they would instantly have heard him pronounced one of the best tempered, happiest of men in existence, though perhaps in a charitable whisper one of them might have inferred, that It was wonderful he should be so, considering how much he must feel his personal de formity, unless, indeed, he happened to be happily and wonderfully blind to it some people are to their defects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Veiled Doctor: A Novel They had refused right of way, refused to contribute to the stock of the baby enter prise, refused everything, in short, and so successfully blocked its progress that a dif ferent route was decided upon, and the old town, under its canopy of trees, fell forever out of step with the vanguard of commerce. But the retired sea captains who formed its population congratulated each other upon the wisdom of their choice as they smoked in the tiny amphibious parlors among the rare shells and curios gathered in a life's cruising. So, bustling prosperity ebbed away, and, like the tide in the sluggish har bor, nobody noticed its going until it was beyond recall. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Doctor, Vol. 1 of 3: A Novel Both the mother and the child were fair; they had the same sunny hair, and rich blue eyes but the lady's first bloom of beauty was past, for she seemed full two-and-thirty years old - ethe perfect woman - and apparently a proud and haughty one. The quiet, supercilious smile of her short upper lip betrayed this, though at times it gave place to a winning look of affection when her eye rested upon the boy beside her. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Country Doctor (Le Medecin De Campagne) And Other Stories In hardly any of his books, with the possible exception of "Eugenie Grandet," does Balzac seem to have taken a greater interest than in "The Country Doctor;" and the fact of this interest, together with the merit and intensity of the book in each case, is, let it be repeated, a valid argument against those who would have it that there was something essentially sinister both in his genius and in his character. "The Country Doctor" was an early book; it was published in 1833, a date of which there is an interesting mark in the selection of the name "Evelina," the name of Madame Hanska, whom Balzac had just met, for the lost Jansenist love of Benassis; and it had been on the stocks for a considerable time. It is also noteworthy, as lying almost entirely outside the general scheme of the "Comedie Humaine" as far as personages go. Its chief characters in the remarkable, if not absolutely impeccable, repertoire of MM. Cerfberr and Chris-tophe (they have, a rare thing with them, missed Agathe the forsaken mistress) have no references appended to their articles, except to the book itself; and I cannot remember that any of the more generally pervading dramatis persona of the Comedy makes even an incidental appearance here. The book is as isolated as its scene and subject - I might have added, as its own beauty, which is singular and unique, nor wholly easy to give a critical account of.
