Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the full story of one man’s adventures as he seeks out the poor and sick in China as a medical missionary, and who was still busily at work in the Far East in his 80’s. In that time he built 15 hospitals and clinics, improvised and improved operation techniques, becoming one of the most widely practiced surgeons in the world, made new discoveries in preventive medicine, invented and developed soybean milk, which is responsible today for saving thousands of lives in undernourished areas of the world, was consulting physician to three U.S. Presidents and personal physician to senators and ambassadors. All this and much more is told us by Raymond S. Moore, vice-president of the College of Medical Evangelists in Loma Linda, California. It is a thrilling story of what happens when a man gives himself and his talents to the service of God. This book deserves a prominent place in the annals of those modern missionaries whose deeds prove that there is still romance and thrill in lives that are God-seeking rather than self-serving. “It is not too much to say that the whole thrilling history of missionary enterprise during the past 100 years has produced few more towering figures than Dr. Harry W. Miller. “He is not only in the inspiring tradition of such all-time ‘greats’ as Livingstone, Judson and Paton, whose dedicated skills indelibly marked the maps with Christian humanitarianism throughout the world’s far places, he is also a restless creator of new traditions, a modern-day pioneer whose imaginative use of medicine has touched millions with the magic of new hope and health. “We are indebted to Raymond S. Moore for this moving and revealing account of Dr. Miller’s unique and infinitely varied life and work.”—Clarence Hall, Senior Editor of Reader’s Digest and author of ADVENTURERS FOR GOD

Book excerpt: Superman was first published in 1938, so how come he still looks to be about 25 years old in the stories set in 2022? Ditto for all the other superheroes from The Golden Age Of Comics still being published today. Why isn't Captain America collecting Social Security? Why isn't The Flash using a walker to get around? Why isn't The Human Torch complaining about his hip replacement? Why isn't Wonder Woman deciding what Medicare plan she wants? Why isn't Batman retired? Why isn't Plastic Man stretching his dollars to afford his nursing home bills? Why isn't The Green Lantern The Green Flashlight by now? Er, never mind about that last question. But the answer to the other ones is money. As long as the corporate comics companies can milk money out of them, these characters will be kept forever young, aside from the occasional "imaginary story" or whatnot. But in stunting their growth, only half the story gets told. What does happen when a superhero ages with the times and eventually becomes elderly? What's so super about getting old? Well, it probably beats being dead. Just ask Bucky. Er, never mind. Anyway, leave it to one of America's worstselling authors who hasn't given up yet to venture in and tell the rest of the superhero story. In the case of Harry Fox, the superhero known as Fast Guy, he finds he can't outrace time or death. His worst foe though is an existential crisis brought on by saving the world numerous times only to have it result in a shallow, selfish place populated mainly by morons and jerks, and sometimes even moronic jerks and jerky morons. Living alone in his old ranch house in a town filled with new McMansions, he is wondering what to do with himself and worrying about what will happen to the world when he is gone. And the reader is left wondering if Harry is really a superhero. Although he claims he's saved the world more times than he can remember from nuclear annihilation, he delights in pooping on world leaders, which sounds more like a supervillain, or, at the very least, a person with issues than it does a superhero. Or maybe he's just a lonely old man with a very active imagination. In a world less than super, can a senior citizen still be a hero? Find out in Fast Guy Slows Down!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written during the English Civil War and Interregnum when the public theatres were closed and Margaret Cavendish was living away from England in exile, Bell in Campo and The Sociable Companions are scathing satires that speak to the role of women's agency amidst this cultural tumult. In Bell in Campo, a group of virtuous women follow their husbands to war and, refusing to remain docilely out of harm's way, form an army of their own. The Sociable Companions details the struggles of four women from impoverished Royalist families trying to survive in a rapacious marriage market at the war's end. This Broadview Edition presents these two complementary plays together, along with supplementary materials on Cavendish's life, the participation of women in the combat of the English Civil War, the conduct of the Royalist military forces, and seventeenth-century social and marriage conventions.

Book excerpt: The River Flows On offers an impressively broad examination of slave resistance in America, spanning the colonial and antebellum eras in both the North and South and covering all forms of recalcitrance, from major revolts and rebellions to everyday acts of disobedience. Walter C. Rucker analyzes American slave resistance with a keen understanding of its African influences, tracing the emergence of an African American identity and culture. Rucker points to the shared cultural heritage that facilitated collective action among both African- and American-born slaves, such as the ubiquitous belief in conjure and spiritual forces, the importance of martial dance and the drum, and ideas about the afterlife and transmigration. Focusing on the role of African cultural and sociopolitical forces, Rucker gives in-depth attention to the 1712 New York City revolt, the 1739 Stono rebellion in South Carolina, the 1741 New York conspiracy, Gabriel Prosser's 1800 Richmond slave plot, and Denmark Vesey's 1822 Charleston scheme. He concludes with Nat Turner's 1831 revolt in Southampton, Virginia, which bore the marks of both conjure and Christianity, reflecting a new, African American consciousness. With rich evidence drawn from anthropology, archaeology, and religion, The River Flows On is an innovative and convincing study.
