Download or read book The Story of French written by Jean-Benoît Nadeau and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2008-01-08 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does everything sound better if it's said in French? That fascination is at the heart of The Story of French, the first history of one of the most beautiful languages in the world that was, at one time, the pre-eminent language of literature, science and diplomacy. In a captivating narrative that spans the ages, from Charlemagne to Cirque du Soleil, Jean-Benoît Nadeau and Julie Barlow unravel the mysteries of a language that has maintained its global influence despite the rise of English. As in any good story, The Story of French has spectacular failures, unexpected successes and bears traces of some of history's greatest figures: the tenacity of William the Conqueror, the staunchness of Cardinal Richelieu, and the endurance of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Through this colorful history, Nadeau and Barlow illustrate how French acquired its own peculiar culture, revealing how the culture of the language spread among francophones the world over and yet remains curiously centered in Paris. In fact, French is not only thriving—it still has a surprisingly strong influence on other languages. As lively as it is fascinating, The Story of French challenges long held assumptions about French and shows why it is still the world's other global language.

Book Synopsis Language Issues in Canada by : Martin Howard
Download or read book Language Issues in Canada written by Martin Howard and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-04 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume attempts to illuminate Canada’s linguistic diversity by bringing together within one single volume a range of innovative studies which explore Canadian language issues across the political, legislative, social, educational and linguistic horizons. The ten chapters within the volume constitute a mixture of overview survey articles on a particular theme, as well as analyses based on large-scale empirical studies, presenting both qualitative and quantitative findings. The multidisciplinary approach provides complementary insights on a range of key-themes central to the Canadian linguistic context, such as in the case of language politics, language legislation, language education, sociolinguistics, language contact, language variation and change, varieties of French, minority language issues and language standardisation. The languages covered include both English and French, as well as Aboriginal languages.
Book Synopsis Nationalism and the Politics of Culture in Quebec by : Richard Handler
Download or read book Nationalism and the Politics of Culture in Quebec written by Richard Handler and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Handler's pathbreaking study of nationalistic politics in Quebec is a striking and successful example of the new experimental type of ethnography, interdisciplinary in nature and intensively concerned with rhetoric and not only of anthropologists but also of scholars in a wide range of fields, and it is likely to stir sharp controversy. Bringing together methodologies of history, sociology, political science, and philosophy, as well as anthropology, Handler centers on the period 1976-1984, during which the independantiste Parti Québéois was in control of the provincial government and nationalistic sentiment was especially strong. Handler draws on historical and archival research, and on interviews with Quebec and Canadian government officials, as he addresses the central question: Given the similarities between the epistemologies of both anthropology and nationalist ideology, how can one write an ethnography of nationalism that does not simply reproduce--and thereby endorse--nationalistic beliefs? Handler analyzes various responses to the nationalist vision of a threatened existence. He examines cultural tourism, ideology of the Quebec government, legislations concerning historical preservation, language legislation and policies towards immigrants and "cultural minorities." He concludes with a thoughtful meditation on the futility of nationalisms.

Book Synopsis The Story of French by : Jean-Benoit Nadeau
Download or read book The Story of French written by Jean-Benoit Nadeau and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2010-05-28 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating exploration of the historical and cultural development of the French language from the bestselling authors of Sixty Million Frenchmen Can’t Be Wrong. Imagine a language that is watched over by a group of forty “Immortals,” a language with rules so complex that few people ever completely master it, whose status as the world’s lingua franca has been declining for two centuries, whose use in global institutions is waning and whose speakers are so insecure they pass laws banning the use of other languages and spend millions of tax-payers’ dollars to make sure it gets used in literature, music and film. Now imagine a language that is second only to English for the number of countries where it is spoken officially, surpassing both Spanish or Arabic, a language that is the official tongue of two G-7 countries and three European nations, that is employed alongside English in most international institutions and that is the number-two choice of language students across the planet – a language with two million teachers and 100 million students worldwide, and whose number of speakers has tripled in the last fifty years. This paradox is the backdrop for The Story of French, in which bilingual Canadian authors Jean-Benoît Nadeau and Julie Barlow unravel the mysteries of a language that has maintained its global influence in spite of the ascendancy of English. Mixing historical analysis with journalistic observation, and drawing on their experiences living in and travelling to French-speaking countries, they explore how the French language developed over the centuries, how it came to be spoken in the Americas, Africa and Asia, and how it has maintained its global appeal.

Book Synopsis Honor and Vengeance by : James Wollrab
Download or read book Honor and Vengeance written by James Wollrab and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-04 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the table before him spread an embroidered cloth bearing images he had seen before. There was a fire burning at the center, its flames reaching toward the sky. Dancing about the fire were three winged beasts representing Life and Time and Fate. As he studied the figures, they began moving back and forth in rhythm to some unheard musical beat. The beasts seemed to mesmerize him as he tried to glance at his watch, but Stephen couldn't see the hands or the dial. He wasn't even sure his watch was with him. Suddenly, the room became too dark to see anything except the glowing eyes of the old woman and the objects on the table before him. Nevertheless, he sensed that the waiting was finally over. The old woman's arm reached out ever so slowly, and her hand pushed the deck of cards toward him. Without a word, she then withdrew her arm back under the shawl. The fact that no words were spoken did not seem unusual to him. There obviously was no need for words.

Download or read book Linguistic Purism written by Olivia Walsh and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first in-depth, comparative investigation of linguistic purism in modern French. It investigates the relative prevalence of purist ideology in France and Quebec. Both experience influence from English and have similar language legislation, but they differ in their social, political and economic history. Three different levels of society are examined (official, group and individual), allowing a comparison of the ‘voice from above’ and the ‘voice from below’. This is a key element in recent discussions of language planning but is rarely provided in studies of French. The study is also the first to apply to empirical data Thomas’s widely cited theoretical framework for describing linguistic purism (1991), and has evaluated and refined this, enhancing the theoretical underpinnings of the field. The book will be of interest not only to French scholars and sociolinguists, but also to scholars of language planning, language policy and language ideologies in all languages.
