Book excerpt: After having a bad start to the morning, Otto struggles to have positive interactions with his friends at school. During the day, he learns that he's having these difficulties because he is doing things backwards compared to what a true friend would do. He's being a "Dneirf." With the help of a school counselor and some friends, Otto turns his day, and himself, in the right direction, becoming a true forward friend once again. This story is a fantastic resource to teach children that social conflict is normal and can and will occur within friendships due to backwards behavior, not necessarily bullying. Sometimes friends just need a little help to turn those backwards behaviors forward again. Be A Friend, Not a Dneirf!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over at the weapons-check, Blade noticed a small disturbance between the reserve combat vet and the attendant. Knowing how these things tended to turn out, he brought the incident to the attention of the rest of the party at his table. “I’ll give you one more chance to bring MY box!” demanded the reserve combat vet, clearly reaching the end of his rope. “And what are you going to do about it...JACK?” mocked the attendant with a sneer. This exchange caught the attention of everyone in the room and prompted Jack’s companions to collect their gear and head for the exit. “We might want to be prepared to move, folks...” observed Jeremiah, picking up his heavily blood-spattered Duster and slipping it on over his well-toned, 5’8” body. Following Jeremiah’s lead, the rest of the Wolf Pack and company rapidly packed up their gear, whilst grabbing a final mouthful of their drinks. Seated at a table around the corner from the weapons-check, Terrence asked, “Valentine...you know these guys...should we be worried?” “We should certainly be ready, just in case,” Valentine replied. Without thinking, the young, stocky Lestor stood up and moved closer to the weapons-check to get a better look.

Book Synopsis Journal of Nicholas Cresswell by : Nicholas Cresswell
Download or read book Journal of Nicholas Cresswell written by Nicholas Cresswell and published by Applewood Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicholas Cresswell was twenty-four years old when he left his birthplace of Edale, England to sail for Virginia, believing that ""a person with a small fortune may live much better and make greater improvements in America than he can possibly do in England."" From the time he left, sailing from Liverpool in 1774, until the time he returned, he kept a diary detailing his experiences in pre-Revolutionary America. As a loyal subject to King George, Cresswell found himself often unhappy in America, detailing the turmoil and abuses often suffered by Loyalists in the colonies. Confining his travel mainly to the mid-Atlantic region, Cresswell not only had occasion to attend a slave gathering and observe what went on there, but also traded amongst many of the native tribes, including the Lenape, Tuscarora, Ottawa and Shawnee. Despite his ambivalence about returning to England, (toward the end of the book he moans, ""I wish to be at home and yet dread the thought of returning to my native Country a Beggar "" (P. 251)), life in the colonies becomes too much for this loyal subject and Cresswell's journal ends in 1777 with his return to England.

Book Synopsis Children, risk and safety on the internet by : Livingstone, Sonia
Download or read book Children, risk and safety on the internet written by Livingstone, Sonia and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2012-07-18 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As internet use is extending to younger children, there is an increasing need for research focus on the risks young users are experiencing, as well as the opportunities, and how they should cope. With expert contributions from diverse disciplines and a uniquely cross-national breadth, this timely book examines the prospect of enhanced opportunities for learning, creativity and communication set against the fear of cyberbullying, pornography and invaded privacy by both strangers and peers. Based on an impressive in-depth survey of 25,000 children carried out by the EU Kids Online network, it offers wholly new findings that extend previous research and counter both the optimistic and the pessimistic hype. It argues that, in the main, children are gaining the digital skills, coping strategies and social support they need to navigate this fast-changing terrain. But it also identifies the struggles they encounter, pinpointing those for whom harm can follow from risky online encounters. Each chapter presents new findings and analyses to inform both researchers and students in the social sciences and policy makers in government, industry or child welfare who are working to enhance children's digital experiences.
