Book excerpt: The Diagnostic Modeling System (DMS) is intended to provide a rapid, yet reliable capability for identifying and evaluating navigation channel operations and maintenance (O & M) alternatives based on limited information about the hydrodynamic and sediment- transport conditions at a site. The DMS gives a diagnosis of a problem shoaling area (in contrast to conducting expensive and time-consuming studies), together with guidance for determining possible solutions. The DMS also contains dredging and associated records to document shoaling patterns and measures taken. As a first proof of concept, the methodology of the DMS was applied to investigate a region of increasing sediment shoaling along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW), Matagorda Bay, Texas. Morphological, engineering, and numerical modeling approaches were taken in three parallel paths. The three study methods found that a bird island located near the intersection of the GIWW and Matagorda Ship Channel (MSC) was experiencing significant erosion because of its close proximity to the MSC entrance and strong flood currents. The DMS methodology led to the conclusion that the GIWW should be located several kilometers north of its present location, which would also improve navigation efficiency at the MSC and GIWW intersection.

Download or read book DMS: Diagnostic Modeling System; Report 2, Reduction of Sediment Shoaling of the Entrance Channel at East Pass, Florida written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents a case study at East Pass, Florida, to assess the concepts and performance of the Diagnostic Modeling System (DMS), which is presently under development. The DMS is intended to give the capability to identify, categorize, and evaluate navigation channel sediment-deposition hot spots, from which the system can be applied to identify corrective actions and perform the appropriate analysis. The level of corrective measures are expected to be within existing project authorization, and the diagnostic procedure should be capable of arriving at solutions to shoaling problems within the project dredging cycle. The system consists of three components: the DMS-Data Manager, the DMS-Manual, and the DMS-Analytical Toolbox, which are described in this report. The object of the case study was to apply DMS concepts and available tools to determine the causes of shoaling in three maintained channels at East Pass Inlet and to recommend solutions to reduce the frequency and cost of dredging. The DMS evaluation led to such potential solutions, indicating the viability of the diagnostic method.
Book Synopsis DMS: Diagnostic Modeling System. Report 4: Shoaling Analysis of St. Marys Entrance, Florida by :
Download or read book DMS: Diagnostic Modeling System. Report 4: Shoaling Analysis of St. Marys Entrance, Florida written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents an analysis of the sediment shoaling characteristics of St. Marys Entrance, Florida, performed for the U.S. Army Engineer District, Jacksonville. Shoaling characteristics and alternatives were investigated for the entire inlet entrance channel. Diagnostic Modeling System procedures were applied to determine causes of channel shoaling and evaluate possible mitigation alternatives to reduce the frequency and cost of dredging. Nearshore wave and tidal circulation modeling was conducted to establish patterns of the current in response to channel configuration alternatives and to estimate sediment transport toward the north jetty from the adjacent beach. Morphological analysis based upon bathymetric surveys, combined with modeling results, indicated that eastward extension of the channel widener would increase the time interval between maintenance dredging events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winston Churchill, whose output as a writer was so prodigious that one might reasonably wonder whether he was paid by the page, was him self put off by long works. As prime minister of Great Britain, he once pushed away a report from a junior minister, observing, "This paper, by its very length, defends itself against the risk of being read." No doubt some laymen will glance at the study that follows and be deterred from further consideration by the fact that the study is a scien tific one. If that is a hurdle for you, I hope you will join me in getting over it, because, if you do, you will find that the authors have quite a story to tell. That story is about change-the possibility that the climatic patterns of the world are in a transition to warmer weather that could lead to a rise in the sea level. You may not have thought much about the sea level previously; it was something we took for granted. But since we have taken it as a given for so long, the adjustments we may have to make will be profound. When you stop to think about all the areas of our lives that could be affected by climatic change, you will be amazed: we have planned our cities, developed our manufacturing techniques, and chosen our en vironmental protection strategies on the assumption of a stable seaJevel.
