Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Origin of Christianity, Vol. 1 of 2: Deduced From Some of Those Evidences Which Are Not Founded on the Authenticity of Scripture I have sometimes tried to guess (of course without hope Of accuracy) what proportion the number Of books which defend the trail: of our religion may bear, to the multitude Of those which, assuming its divinity, explain and enforce its doctrines, promises, and precepts. Not that we could infer simply from these proportions, were they ascertained, which kind of addition is now the mere (or, should I say, the less likely to do good. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Origin and Authority of the Bible Believing that a small work, setting forth in simple language some of the evidences of the divine origin and authority of the Bible would be acceptable to the masses of the people and would be read with interest and profit by them, I have written the present work. It is not a compilation, but almost an exclusively original composition, presenting new arguments and evidences not to be found elsewhere. Vast efforts are being made by professed scientists and infidels to undermine the Bible, and thus overthrow the Christian faith. But all their efforts will prove futile and vain. They will only pull down destruction upon themselves, while the Book will stand, as it has always stood, all the wrath of men and the malice of devils. You must not suppose that this is all that can be said in defense of the Bible. It is a very meager sketch. It is not the thousandth part Volumes upon volumes might be written without exhausting it. Evidences of Christianity have been written oftentimes by profoundly able and scholarly men, but the evidences (that is all the evidences) have never been written, and never can be written, for they sweep the universe. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Divine Providence, or the Three Cycles of Revelation, Showing the Parallelism of the Patriarchal, Jewish, and Christian Dispensations: Being a New Evidence of the Divine Origin of Christianity The most capable argument hitherto offered is undoubtedly that arising from the consecutive nature of the three dispensations; for all that we can require for the truth of Christianity is, to prove that it has been the work of God. That fact once ascertained, its doctrines and promises must be received as they are given. But the succes sion of the three requires so much chastised and calm inquiry, which the indolence of scepticism will not undertake; and so much clearing away of matters originating solely in local circumstance, of which its prejudice is glad to take advantage; that hitherto few arguments have been less prac tically effectual. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divinity of Jesus Christ: An Exposition of the Origin and Reasonableness of the Belief of the Christian Church Or John, in canonical writings attributed to them, recognize the divinity of Christ, and it is generally admitted that they do, there are still to be met two uncertainties respect ing this testimony, - its genuineness and its divine assurance. We are not sure, for in stance, that Paul wrote Colossians, and if he did, we are not certain that he gives us more than the result of his own reasoning upon facts otherwise known to us, and upon which we can re ect for ourselves. Large allowance, it is further suggested, must be made for tendencies in an uncritical and unscientific age to give a supernatural explanation of re markable phenomena, to deify heroes, to put mystical and speculative interpretations upon ancient Scriptures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Mystery: A Reading of the History of Christianity Down to the Time of Christ The present volume is the first of a series intended to elucidate the history and significance of the greatest revolution in history. The writer is proceeding with a study of Jesus the Nazarene, and the intricate problem of the growth and formation of the Christian creed and scriptures. It was not my original purpose to do more than summarise and combine the labours of previous students, and hence this outline was written mainly from memory. In deference to the wishes of others, I have now provided it with a modest furniture of references and citations for the guidance of readers unfamiliar with the subject (in doing which I have had the expert assistance of Mr. Dudley Wright); but I need not say that these notes give a very inadequate idea of the material actually drawn upon. It is as a work of interpretation, and not as a work of reference, that the volume has been planned, and the only scientific merit it can pretend to is that claimed by Bossuet for his Universal His tory, the merit of a general chart which shows the relations between different provinces. Current literature is seriously deficient in comprehensive surveys of the kind and I may be allowed to pay a tribute in passing to Professor Myres' lucid sketch, The Dawn of H istory, which I could wish to be read by way of introduction to these pages. So far as I am aware this is the first attempt at a complete outline of the Christian evolution in the light of modern knowledge, and perhaps the chapters dealing with the rise of monotheism may be found to bridge a real gap. No reader can feel so strongly as the writer how tentative and provisional every work of this kind must be for a long time to come but if we were to wait for perfect certainty in the field of history, we should wait for ever. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament History: A Study of the Beginnings of Christianity This history might be more strictly called a study of the beginnings of Christianity. While designed primarily for use as a college textbook, it should be of equal value to any reader who wishes to trace the story of Christianity in its first days. This is first Of all a historical study. The average man has been wont to regard Christianity as a fixed and finished something that has been dropped down from the skies. If you speak of the Christian religion he will think first of all of a collection of writings, or of a body of doctrine, or Of the institution of the church. But these three, Bible and doctrine and church, are simply the products of a greater movement that lies back of them. To understand Christi amity we must go back to this great current of life which was at once the greatest revelation of the divine Spirit and the greatest movement of the human spirit that mankind has known. What was the world to which this new life came? What did its Founder teach and do? How did the world brotherhood come out of the little company of Jews that followed him? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, Paul Johnson’s exceptional study of Christianity has been loved and widely hailed for its intensive research, writing, and magnitude—“a tour de force, one of the most ambitious surveys of the history of Christianity ever attempted and perhaps the most radical” (New York Review of Books). In a highly readable companion to books on faith and history, the scholar and author Johnson has illuminated the Christian world and its fascinating history in a way that no other has. Johnson takes off in the year AD 49 with his namesake the apostle Paul. Thus beginning an ambitious quest to paint the centuries since the founding of a little-known ‘Jesus Sect’, A History of Christianity explores to a great degree the evolution of the Western world. With an unbiased and overall optimistic tone, Johnson traces the fantastic scope of the consequent sects of Christianity and the people who followed them. Information drawn from extensive and varied sources from around the world makes this history as credible as it is reliable. Invaluable understanding of the framework of modern Christianity—and its trials and tribulations throughout history—has never before been contained in such a captivating work.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Prophecies Proving the Divine Origin of Christianity: Delivered in the Chapel of the Hon. Society of Lincoln's Inn, on the Foundation of the Late Bishop Warburton "Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people he assembled: who among them can declare this, and show us former things? Let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified: or let them hear and say, It is truth." In the days of Ahab, king of Israel, Elijah the Tishbite terminated a controversy, and proved the truth of his religion by an appeal to Omnipotence. He proposed that the worshippers of the Lord and the followers of Baal should severally prepare an altar and a victim, call upon the object of their adoration, and acknowledge him that should answer by fire as the true and living God. The challenge was accepted, the altars erected, the victims slain, and laid in order. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
