Less than 24-hours after this jaw-dropping discovery, the situation is desperate. Earth's forces discover a legend of an unholy weapon which, if found, could be used to decimate the alien invaders. Hoping this will save Earth, Staff Sergeant Leo Frasier and his unit are transported in a flash of light to another world - a world of magic. Separated on arrival, Leo manages to find two comrades. Together, they undertake quests to earn new allies among the kingdom of Kaslea. However, this world of magic is not without its own problems. Leaving no survivors in its wake, a great dragon terrorizes the kingdom, turning villages to ash. Making matters worse, the neighboring kingdoms of Gatlan and Sintiya are at war and that war is spilling over into Kaslea's border. With a knight of the realm at their side, Leo and his team must do what no hero of Kaslea has yet managed - slay the dragon. Defeating the dragon will put them on a path to saving two worlds. Failing will guarantee the destruction of both.

Book excerpt: This vivid and concise history traces more than a hundred years of Japanese Americans in Seattle, before and after the tumultuous events of the early 1940s, when World War II and the incarceration of Japanese Americans divided the community from its past and forced tens of thousands of people to uproot and start anew. Concentration camps at Minidoka, Idaho, and nine other inland locations were the crucible for postwar change and accomplishment, but at the same time shattered the dreams and spirits of many of the older immigrant Issei. The story is local, but it is representative of the Japanese American experience on the U.S. West Coast. Poignant photographs from family albums and historical archives illustrate the book, giving faces and names to history.

Because Christ is fully revealed in the New Testament, the epistles have only two levels, the historical and the prophetic. Much is lost when Christians only see and study the Scriptures from the historical vintage point. Rightly Dividing the Word reveals these hidden prophetic treasures to the discerning student.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a hundred years, demography has been at the heart of the Zionist project, reflected in the goal of creating and maintaining a Jewish majority in Israel and in ensuring the physical continuation of the Jewish people. Demography continues to be an essential issue in the current struggle between Israel and Palestine. Yet in academic discourse, demography is treated as a minor, largely technical side-issue in the social sciences, with little theoretical consideration given to population processes as social processes. Israel's Destiny: Fertility and Mortality in a Divided Society brings together important recent work in this area. The contributions to Israel's Destiny focus on the influence of religion, religiosity, nationalism, and ethnicity on fertility and mortality in Israel. Israel's Destiny is divided into four sections: the first focuses on fertility, particularly Israel's apparently high birth rate when compared with other countries with a similar standard of living; the second looks at patterns of nuptiality and contraception and the way marriage patterns are shaping group boundaries; the third looks at mortality, particularly among men; and the fourth looks at social policy effects of the demographic process. The main focus is that differential reproduction of the population by national and ethnic group, as well as social class--through fertility and mortality--and the social structuring of the population--through marriage patterns--are critical elements in the creation and evolution of Israeli society. The editors' introduction places all these studies in a wider perspective of current demographic research. The volume provides a concise population history of the state of Israel to help the reader put the studies in their proper local and historical context.

Mercifully, the career is over; the kids are gone. Now there is nothing left to distract you from the elephant in the room. You stare at your significant other with the most disconcerting doubts about whether the relationship has run its natural course. You own up to your part in friendships that have become more like placeholders. Years of meaningless, if tenuous, connection have left you hollow. Detox Your Circle, Activate Your Destiny establishes the premise for removing thirteen toxic elements—people, self-sabotaging behaviors, baggage, and meaningless rituals, to name a few—and demonstrates how decluttering can trigger a very powerful clarity. When we detox our Rolodex, our true nature and essence attract more of who we are. What ensues is a resonance that sets the tone and cosmic parameters for fulfilling destiny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In eighteenth- and nineteenth-century debates about the constructions of American nationhood and national citizenship, the frequently invoked concept of divided sovereignty signified the division of power between state and federal authorities and/or the possibility of one nation residing within the geopolitical boundaries of another. Political and social realities of the nineteenth century—such as immigration, slavery, westward expansion, Indigenous treaties, and financial panics—amplified anxieties about threats to national/state sovereignty. Rochelle Raineri Zuck argues that, in the decades between the ratification of the Constitution and the publication of Sutton Griggs’s novel Imperium in Imperio in 1899, four populations were most often referred to as racial and ethnic nations within the nation: the Cherokees, African Americans, Irish Americans, and Chinese immigrants. Writers and orators from these groups engaged the concept of divided sovereignty to assert alternative visions of sovereignty and collective allegiance (not just ethnic or racial identity), to gain political traction, and to complicate existing formations of nationhood and citizenship. Their stories intersected with issues that dominated nineteenth-century public argument and contributed to the Civil War. In five chapters focused on these groups, Zuck reveals how constructions of sovereignty shed light on a host of concerns including regional and sectional tensions; territorial expansion and jurisdiction; economic uncertainty; racial, ethnic, and religious differences; international relations; immigration; and arguments about personhood, citizenship, and nationhood.

He calls himself her escort, not a date; therefore, no problem. But neither, Jorden or Matt, is prepared for their final hours together before they go separate ways. Jorden has lingering doubts. Book excerpt: The Divided Union is an account of five of the most dramatic and tragic years in the history of the United States of America. The fledgling superpower pitted families and neighbours against each other in a war concerned with the most fundamental of human motivations: freedom, identity and nation. While great leaders like Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant found their moment, millions of ordinary Americans suffered terribly, and more were killed than during the First and Second World Wars combined. The victory of the North determined the indivisibility of the Union and ensured its development as a nation, yet deep scars remained, and the ideals outlined by Lincoln in the Gettysburg Address failed to become a blueprint for the modern USA. This is an accessible and compelling account both of the conflict itself and of its wider implications.

Book excerpt: In this eloquent guide to the meanings of the postmodern era, Albert Borgmann charts the options before us as we seek alternatives to the joyless and artificial culture of consumption. Borgmann connects the fundamental ideas driving his understanding of society's ills to every sphere of contemporary social life, and goes beyond the language of postmodern discourse to offer a powerfully articulated vision of what this new era, at its best, has in store. "[This] thoughtful book is the first remotely realistic map out of the post modern labyrinth."—Joseph Coates, The Chicago Tribune "Rather astoundingly large-minded vision of the nature of humanity, civilization and science."—Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: Even while Randall was speaking, it was Pietro I saw, the tenderness in his dark eyes looking at me, the caress in his soft voice. In Randall's voice there was not a shred of emotion; nor was there any in his expression. How should I respond? What should I say? I knew this was the hardest decision I would ever have to make. Either choice would demand a different price. Was I prepared to pay it? Was love enough in the one to bridge all the other differences of nationality, religion, and heritage? Was family loyalty, future security enough to decide for the other? What was my destiny? The heroine of Destiny's Bride is Druscilla Montrose, who first meets Randall Bondurant when she is a bridesmaid at his wedding to her cousin Alair Chance. Eight years later, after Alair's mysterious death, they meet again in a chance encounter. This leads to a strange series of events in which Druscilla debates, then accepts the position offered her by Alair's widower. Against all advice, Dru becomes governess to her two motherless little cousins, a difficult decision because of the suspicions and accusations of family and friends that Randall might have been responsible for his wife's death. She travels with the family to Italy. Here against the romantic background of nineteenth-century Europe, Druscilla receives two unexpected offers: One is a love that will mean giving up her heritage; the other requires a decision more important than any she has ever had to make before. Dru's choices bring her into conflicts of loyalty, challenges of faith and duty, and threatened danger, as well as romance.
