Because none of the universities disclose their holding on a security by security basis, I constructed proxies for their holdings using mutual funds. I then examine the costs, on both a gross and a risk adjusted basis, of divesting the proxies of holdings of fossil fuel companies. The losses are not insignificant - exceeding $100 million per year for Harvard the university with the largest endowment.

However, avoiding investments in such companies can be expected to impose a financial cost on the investor because of reduced opportunities for portfolio diversification. We compare the risk-adjusted return performance of investment portfolios with and without fossil fuel companies over the period 1927-2015. Contrary to theoretical expectations, we find that fossil-free investing does not seem to impair financial performance. These findings can be explained by the fact that fossil fuel company portfolios do not generate above-market performance and provide relatively limited diversification benefits. Significant performance impacts of a divestment strategy, however, are observed over short time frames and when applying divestment to less diversified investment portfolios.

Book excerpt: This paper explores whether increasing fossil fuel divestment commitments are related to thereduction of capital flows into the oil & gas sector, based on an analysis of syndicated lending, equity and bond underwriting across 33 countries from 2000 to 2015. We find that increasing oil & gas divestment pledges in a country are negatively related with new capital flows to domestic oil & gas companies. This effect is enhanced in more stringent environmental policy regimes and diminished in countries which heavily subsidise fossil fuels. However, the divestment movement may have an unintended effect, insofar as domestic banks situated in countries with high divestment commitments and stringent environmental policies provide more finance to oil & gas companies abroad. We explain these findings through the lens of institutional theory, and show how both regulatory and socially normative elements of institutions shape this dynamic.
