Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divas Destined for Greatness offers an interactive program for teenage girls of all socio-economic backgrounds. Each session is designed to address real life issues. In a non threatening environment, participants can share those personal experiences and feelings which impact their daily life choices. The author, often comments that "the health and wealth of a country can be measured by the behaviors and statistics of its women." She therefore poses this question. How healthy is our United States of America, one of the most progressive nations in the world? The dismal answer and statistics regarding the social, emotional and physical health of teenage girls and young women in our country prompted the contents of Divas Destined for Greatness . The program is designed to create an intergenerational relationship between teenage girls, young adult and older women. Regular interaction and bonding will encourage teenagers to uncover their personal relationship with God and discover how it relates to their self image, attitude, knowledge, problem solving and conflict resolution skills. The Parent Orientation, Self Assessments and Community Involvement components help each Diva to identify that internal energy she must have to recognize the need and desire to initiate positive change. Brenda Joyce Dawson has been a merited educational leader for more than four decades. She is a former teacher of the mentally and emotionally challenged and school principal from public and private systems. As founder and president of I AM Ministries of Miami-Dade/Broward Inc. she has coordinated program services to strengthen women and restore the family. Her most recent publication, The Women's Empowerment Hour Manual has been successfully used as a resource to many women support groups throughout south Florida and is recommended as the companion text to the Divas Destined for Greatness Program.

Book excerpt: An impassioned homage to the divas who shake up our world and transform it with their bold, dazzling artistry. What does it mean to be a “diva”? A shifting, increasingly loaded term, it has been used to both deride and celebrate charismatic and unapologetically fierce performers like Aretha Franklin, Divine, and the women of Labelle. In this brilliant, powerful blend of incisive criticism and electric memoir, Deborah Paredez—scholar, cultural critic, and lifelong diva devotee—unravels our enduring fascination with these icons and explores how divas have challenged American ideas about feminism, performance, and freedom. American Diva journeys into Tina Turner’s scintillating performances, Celia Cruz’s command of the male-dominated salsa world, the transcendent revival of Jomama Jones after a period of exile, and the unparalleled excellence of Venus and Serena Williams. Recounting how she and her mother endlessly watched Rita Moreno’s powerhouse portrayal of Anita in West Side Story and how she learned much about being bigger than life from her fabulous Tía Lucia, Paredez chronicles the celebrated and skilled performers who not only shaped her life but boldly expressed the aspiration for freedom among brown, Black, and gay communities. Paredez also traces the evolution of the diva through the decades, dismayed at the mid-aughts’ commodification and juvenilizing of its meaning but finding its lasting beauty and power. Filled with sharp insights and great heart, American Diva is a spirited tribute to the power of performance and the joys of fandom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's 18-to-40-year-olds make for a notoriously elusive group of consumers: they're savvy, sophisticated, and particular. They're all but immune to traditional advertising and have an instinctive sense of quality and fair pricing. Inundated with choices, they are drawn to brands that satisfy not just what they need, but what they crave. At the same time, these consumers are spending money like it's going out of style. Generation X has firmly refuted its slacker reputation and is nearing the height of its earning potential. Generation Y has more buying power than any previous generation of teens and twentysomethings. But how to win their attention and loyalty? In Mind Your X's and Y's, Lisa Johnson proves that the buying habits of 18-to-40-year-olds can be anticipated. Johnson, coauthor of Don't Think Pink and a leading marketing consultant, pinpoints the new rules of engagement for this Connected Generation. Based on her own and others' groundbreaking research, she looks into the heart of the Gen X and Y psyche to identify its ten core cravings -- for adventure, for high-concept design, for new families and social networks, and for personal storytelling, to name a few. This revolutionary book is packed with fascinating case studies of established and breakaway brands from every major industry, interviews with dozens of maverick thinkers and hundreds of consumers, and numerous revealing statistics. Johnson analyzes the scope of each craving to determine how it drives specific buying behaviors and offers relevant data that illustrate its impact. Mind Your X's and Y's equips anyone who wants to reach these consumers -- brand managers and their advertising, online, creative, packaging, events, and promotions teams; small-business owners and their marketing staff; advertising agencies and specialists -- with the know-how to transform market research into profitable strategies. Members of Generations X and Y are the most coveted and hard-to-reach consumers in the marketplace. Mind Your X's and Y's is a master class in how to create compelling brands for this Connected Generation.
