Book Synopsis Beyond Lines of Control by : Ravina Aggarwal
Download or read book Beyond Lines of Control written by Ravina Aggarwal and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-30 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kashmir conflict, the ongoing border dispute between India and Pakistan, has sparked four wars and cost thousands of lives. In this innovative ethnography, Ravina Aggarwal moves beyond conventional understandings of the conflict—which tend to emphasize geopolitical security concerns and religious essentialisms—to consider how it is experienced by those living in the border zones along the Line of Control, the 435-mile boundary separating India from Pakistan. She focuses on Ladakh, the largest region in northern India’s State of Jammu and Kashmir. Located high in the Himalayan and Korakoram ranges, Ladakh borders Pakistan to the west and Tibet to the east. Revealing how the shadow of war affects the lives of Buddhist and Muslim communities in Ladakh, Beyond Lines of Control is an impassioned call for the inclusion of the region’s cultural history and politics in discussions about the status of Kashmir. Aggarwal brings the insights of performance studies and the growing field of the anthropology of international borders to bear on her extensive fieldwork in Ladakh. She examines how social and religious boundaries are created on the Ladakhi frontier, how they are influenced by directives of the nation-state, and how they are shaped into political struggles for regional control that are legitimized through discourses of religious purity, patriotism, and development. She demonstrates in lively detail the ways that these struggles are enacted in particular cultural performances such as national holidays, festivals, rites of passage ceremonies, films, and archery games. By placing cultural performances and political movements in Ladakh center stage, Aggarwal rewrites the standard plot of nation and border along the Line of Control.

The Study Tries To Map Out The Crises Which Are Reinforced By The Ruling Class In India Since Decades In The Process Of Identity Formations Based On Race, Religion, Caste And Culture In Politics And Dismantling The Role Of State In Economy Through The Process Of Market Led Reforms. The Crisis Is Again Reinforced By The Given Political Economy Of The Indian Society Where Masses Have To Sacrifice Their Development For The Pleasure Of Others. Instead Of Solving These Acute Problems, The Indian Ruling Class Tries To Overcome It By Diverting People From The Real Life Issues Through The Process Of Spreading The Venom Of Communalism And Other Emotive Issues. The Society And Culture Is Being Shaped By The Economy, And Economics Does Not Lead Politics Rather It Follows Politics. Thus, It Is Necessary Precondition To Shape Politics For The Better Economy That Works For The Masses. Apart From The Market Based Advocacy, The Ruling Class In India Also Advocates For The Technology And Information. Of Course, We Need Technology But Till Now It Is In The Hands Of The Few And Far Away From The Masses. An Understanding About Crises And Its Reinforcing Agencies Will Be Essential For All Future Struggles For Alternatives. While The Students And Teachers Concerned With Development Studies Will Find This Book Informative, The General Readers Will Find It A Real Eye-Opener.

Book Synopsis Land Acquisition, Industrialization and Livelihoods by : Sumanta Prakash Shee
Download or read book Land Acquisition, Industrialization and Livelihoods written by Sumanta Prakash Shee and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an assessment of the impacts of human intervention on the natural environment and peoples' livelihoods through land-use conversion due to industrialization. Problems of land acquisition and the execution thereof have varying consequences that depend on the specific geographical as well as socio-political contexts in which they occur. This book covers a specific study of JSW Bengal Steel Ltd., which in 2014 planned to set up a 10.0 million ton per year integrated steel plant at the upper catchment of Sundra basin, the tributary of the Shilabati that ultimately pours to the river Rupnarayan, located at Salboni Block of Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal, India. The project was ultimately put on hold, but caused many lingering environmental and socioeconomic problems due to the acquisition of formerly productive lands. The book examines this case to generate a database on the different aspects of land acquisition and its negative impacts on the geomorphology and hydrological of non-timber forest products, agricultural impacts resulting in livelihood changes, policy dimensions of land acquisition, and the impacts of delays in project implementation through a comparative analysis between projects-affected areas and non-project areas. The book will appeal to environmental managers and industry workers, as well as students and researchers in environmental economics, anthropology, and human geography.
