Book excerpt: The ultimate goals of this research were to improve quality, speed completion, and reduce risk in mechanically-stabilized earth (MSE) wall projects. Research objectives were to assure (1) that variability in the corrosion properties of soil (pH, minimum resistivity, chloride, and sulfate levels) due to sampling and analytical technique was much lower than variability in these levels within and between soil sources and types and thus did not inflate the risk of emplacing a corrosive soil as MSE wall backfill, (2) that the number of soil type samples analyzed prior to acceptance of a backfill was appropriate, based on the expected distribution of corrosion properties within the backfill, and (3) that the corrosion properties of backfill material did not change appreciably over time, especially after emplacement and over the design lifetime of an MSE wall. Corrosion properties of soil were tested with Florida Methods (FMs) 5-550, 5-551, 5-552, and 5-553 for pH, minimum resistivity, water-soluble chloride, and water-soluble sulfate, respectively. Changes to the quality assurance (QA) plan for acceptance quality characteristics (AQC) of backfill corrosion properties were recommended based on research outcomes. These changes had as their focus an improvement in the buyers statistical power to accept good backfill material through reductions in test error associated with material properties, sample processing, and laboratory procedures. Recommended changes included (1) proposed revisions to the FMs for pH, minimum resistivity, chloride, and sulfate, (2) an increase in the number of independent samples tested for pH and minimum resistivity, (3) a revised acceptance limit for minimum resistivity, (4) method operator training and independent audits, (5) an inter-laboratory study post-implementation of the revised methods, and (6) re-evaluation of the need for chloride and sulfate testing for backfill above a pre-determined minimum resistivity. Geochemical modeling with the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) model PHREEQC for a conservative case of a low ionic strength and poorly buffered sandy backfill revealed that in a few years time the pore water of emplaced backfill could equilibrate with infiltrating rainfall. The model results suggested that a soils buffering capacity might be important consideration when metal is used as reinforcement in MSE wall backfill. Field and laboratory testing of candidate sands to calibrate the model were recommended ahead of any proposed changes to the QA plan based on model results.

Book excerpt: Cement stabilization of backfill has been used for some time in mechanically stabilized earth type retaining walls. However, there has been no data on the corrosion life of galvanized steel reinforcement in this environment, which is intermediate in pH between normal soil and pure cement. Field observations had indicated a potential corrosion problem at a particular site in District 12. As a result of the test program conducted during this project, the following conclusions were made. First, cement addition to backfill in the usual quantities (i.e. 7% or more) raised the pH environment to values close to that of normal concrete. At these levels corrosion rates of zinc coatings were not significantly accelerated -- if anything, corrosion rates were less than for unstabilized fill. Second, very small amounts of cement addition, of the order of 1% to 4% producing pH values significantly less than 12, could cause limited acceleration of corrosion. It is, therefore, advisable to control minimum cement levels and to encourage efficient mixing. Third, elevated corrosion rates were associated primarily with the presence of inorganic ions, both for stabilized and unstabilized fill. In the case of the problem site in District 12, this appeared to be the result primarily of unusually high sulfate content in the fill. Fourth, the use of crushed concrete as backfill did not accelerate corrosion. This material, therefore, appears to be acceptable for this application.

Book excerpt: In Kansas, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls are typically backfilled with coarse aggregate. Current backfill material testing procedures used by the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) utilize on-site observations for construction quality assurance and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials standard T 288-12 ("Standard Method of Test for Determining Minimum Laboratory Soil Resistivity"). AASHTO T 288-12 is designed to test a soil sample's electrical resistivity (ER) that correlates to its corrosion potential. However, the test, based on material passing through a No. 10 sieve, is inappropriate for coarse aggregate typically used by KDOT as the aggregate will be retained on a No. 10 sieve and potentially leads to over-conservative designs. However, ER imaging provides a two-dimensional (2D) profile of bulk ER of backfill material, thereby yielding more information regarding backfill uniformity compared to traditional sampling. The objective of this study was to characterize bulk ER of in-place MSE wall backfill aggregate. In this study, MSE walls selected by KDOT were tested using ER imaging during construction to determine bulk ER of the backfill. Variations within backfill ER may be a result of varying aggregate material, inclusions of fines, thoroughness of compaction, and the presence of water. ER imaging was used on five walls: four MSE walls and one gravity retaining wall that contained no reinforcement. One MSE wall contained metal reinforcement, while the other four walls contained geosynthetic. The ER imaging field method produced a 2D profile that depicted ER uniformity for bulk analysis. A post processing algorithm was generated to remove the subjective nature of the ER imaging results. The program determines the bulk ER based upon the ER imaging results. These results indicate that the laboratory analysis of AASHTO T 288-12 under-estimates the bulk ER of in-situ backfill material. Identification of a material's bulk ER will help characterize the ER of aggregates in a complementary KDOT project. Results of this study will be used to recommend an in-situ test method for aggregate used by KDOT.

Book excerpt: It is critically important to predict the corrosivity of fill materials in mechanically-stabilized earth (MSE) walls which can cause corrosion of steel reinforcement and lead to structural failure. A common way of assessing the corrosivity of fill materials is to analyze readily soluble constituents such as chloride and sulfate. In this study, fill materials with a wide range of geological type and gradation were collected throughout the US and Canada and analyzed with several methods to extract soil leachate. An empirical model was developed to estimate the resistivity of soil leachates as a function of chloride, sulfate, and alkalinity concentrations, and this calculation can be used to corroborate laboratory testing results.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls are a more advanced form of a retaining wall, often larger and able to hold back more backfill. This is achieved by reinforcing strips or meshes (most often galvanized steel) placed into the soil, which are held in place by friction. The strips mechanically stabilize the earth while undergoing tension. The wall is covered with concrete medallions that connect to the reinforcements. The medallions have only a secondary structural role in holding up the wall but provide cover that protects the soil from washing away. MSE walls are structures expected to have very long service lives (e.g. 100 years). Confirmation is needed that such durability can be achieved, especially to show that the progression of corrosion of the reinforcement is slow enough. Ten MSE walls around Florida were instrumented (electrical connections were made through the concrete covers to the buried elements) between 1996- 1998 and used to survey corrosion rates of galvanized strip or mesh soil reinforcements. Initial estimates of corrosion-related durability were obtained at that time, indicating a good prognosis for long term durability. The objective of the research in this thesis was to obtain additional indications of the durability of reinforcements in MSE walls in Florida so as to perform a more reliable projection of future performance. Corrosion behavior was measured at the same locations as the initial survey by electrochemical nondestructive tests and by destructive tests. The nondestructive testing consisted of half-cell potentials, polarization resistance measurements, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Corrosion rates reported in this thesis are based upon polarization resistance measurements. The destructive testing consisted of soil extraction and hardware extraction. Hardware extraction enabled independent verification of estimates of electrochemical corrosion rate. Analysis of extracted soil verified that soil composition was within construction specifications. The data from the current survey were also used to further improve prediction of corrosion. The present series of evaluations confirm that the structures are performing as desired based upon the updated model projection of future corrosion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Electrical resistivity measurement is proving to be an essential tool for the durability assessment of concrete. It was mainly developed to assess reinforcement corrosion since moisture and chloride ingress are both factors that affect resistivity. The current method in use, the rapid chloride permeability (RCP) test, is outdated as specimen preparation is labor-intensive and the test is time-consuming. Resistivity measurement is the better alternative as it is non-destructive and comparatively faster, cheaper, and easier to use, as well as being more reliable. Due to the electrical nature of resistivity measurements, the presence of ions in contaminated concrete can alter resistivity measurements. The primary objective of this thesis was to study the effect of chloride and sulfate ions on the resistivity of concrete. Sodium chloride and anhydrous sodium sulfate were used to achieve the required concentration of chlorides or sulfates, respectively. Tests were conducted on specimens with increasing concentration, where each individual specimen had a constant concentration throughout, and on specimens with a concentration gradient. The resistivity measurement techniques utilized were surface resistivity using a Wenner array and bulk resistivity. Surface resistivity was performed on the cylinders as well as on the split faces after the cylinder has undergone a splitting tensile strength test. The effect of water-to-cement ratio (w/c) and the geometric proportions of the cylinder on the resistivity were also studied." --

Book excerpt: This research study involves a comprehensive and detailed review of pullout resistance of backfill reinforcement used in mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls constructed in Texas. There are two major thrust areas in the proposed study: (a) evaluation of pullout resistance factors for specific backfill-reinforcement combinations used by Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), and (b) review and testing of typical reinforcement details used to circumvent vertical and horizontal obstructions. The research plan to accomplish the above research objectives relies heavily on a comprehensive, large-scale pullout test program.
