The DERMS solutions aggregate the small-scale BTM DERs to provide grid services including demand response, voltage regulation, and situational awareness. Book excerpt: "The integration of renewable energy resources will keep increasing as the demand for energy increases; these resources are great replacement for conventional fossil-based power plants. In order to maximize the capacity of such resources, major modifications to the power grid planning, operation and protection are required to ensure proper operation and planning of the power grid. For the operation of power girds, a demand response program can be developed to extend the flexibility of the system. Using the aggregated effect of small devices, and changing the cumulative demand level, the variability and uncertainty of renewable energy resources can be mitigated while maintaining the voltage levels of the network. On a larger scale, modifications are required to maintain the reliability of the power delivery in existing networks. Having resources at the demand side of the grid reverses the power flow off many parts of that system. A reconfiguration of the grid should be carried out to maximize the benefits from such resources and increase the loadability of the grid. Moreover, the functionality of protection devices, deployed throughout the network, is based on the flow of current in each sector of the grid. Power distribution systems are mainly of radial nature, implicating that the current flows in one direction, which determines the choice of protection devices. When integrating renewable resources into a distribution network of radial nature, the current can flow in any direction. This jeopardizes the function of protection systems which should be upgraded to economically replace the protection devices. To this extent, this dissertation presents solutions to the three problems in order to facilitate planning and operation of reliable power grid with significant penetration levels of renewables. A multi-level demand response controller is proposed to maintain the power balance and increase the flexibility of the system. A network reconfiguration approach is also developed to account for installed distributed generation units with consideration to the protection system. Finally, a physically inspired framework is proposed for upgrade planning of the protection system in response to the long-term increase of distributed generation in the grid"--
