Book excerpt: "Recent declines in the number of sockeye salmon Onchorynchus nerka returning to Lake Clark, Alaska have caused economic hardship in the region and raised resource concerns among local subsistence users and Federal managers. A lack of information regarding the distribution of spawning habitats in the glacially turbid Lake Clark watershed instigated this research. Radio telemetry was used to 1) determine the in-lake movement patterns of adult sockeye salmon and 2) identify sockeye salmon spawning locations. Sockeye salmon were radio tagged at they entered Lake Clark and tracked to spawning locations. After entering Lake Clark, sockeye salmon usually migrated to a region of the lake that was within 15 km of their spawning location. Tagged fish migrated faster and more directly to spawning locations in tributary rivers and lakes than to Lake Clark beaches. Thirty three spawning locations were identified in the Lake Clark watershed including 18 new spawning locations compared to previous scientific research and ten compared to traditional local knowledge. Most radio tagged sockeye salmon (65%) returned to spawning locations in glacially turbid waters and most spawning locations (75%) were adjacent to privately owned lands. Proactive measures should be taken to conserve both migration corridors and spawning habitats"--Leaves iii.

Book excerpt: "Salmon returning to Lake Clark, Alaska are a valuable subsistence, commercial and ecological resource, and are an important component of the larger Kvichak River escapement. Average escapement to the Kvichak River declined sharply during 1996-2005, prompting studies to investigate age and size at maturity, key life history traits of salmon linked to reproductive success and survival. We examined potential factors which may influence sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka age and size at maturity: spawning habitat and ocean environment, and examined variation in both traits over time. Sockeye salmon age and length at maturity differed among spawning locations and between brood years, but no consistent patterns were observed among habitat types. Age and length at maturity differed over time; the proportion of older marine age 3 fish was larger in recent brood years, while fish were smaller during 1997-2001 compared to 1976-1980. Sea surface temperatures and coastal upwelling appeared to be important indicators of fish length, highlighting the importance of the ocean environment in salmon growth. These results demonstrate the complexity and importance of both the freshwater and ocean ecosystems in variation in age and size at maturity, and indicate that trends may not necessarily be similar among systems or years"--Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: Ecological studies on the fresh-water phases of the life history of sockeye salmon and studies on related limnology and climatology were made at Brooks Lake, Alaska, in 1957. Data are presented and interpreted on adult sockeye salmon spawning distributions and behavior, age, sex, length, fecundity, and bear predation; on juvenile sockeye salmon ages, food, growth, migration from the lake, relative abundance, and distribution in the lake; and on climatological and limnological factors that may influence sockeye salmon behavior and abundance.

Book excerpt: The life history of juvenile sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) resident in Chignik River, Alaska, represents a departure from the lacustrine, pelagic existence typical of juveniles of this species. For this reason, the distribution, relative abundance in different parts of the river, growth, and upstream and downstream movements of juvenile sockeye in the river were studied during the summers of 1963 and 1964. The objectives of the study were to gain information on the possible origins of juvenile sockeye resident in Chignik River, and on the role of Chignik River in production of sockeye salmon. Distribution and abundance were estimated by seining and underwater observation. Juvenile sockeye appeared to be restricted to quiet waters along the shore. Catches of sockeye fry tended to increase through the summer, whereas catches of yearlings decreased. Smolts were taken in significant numbers only in June and July. early summer, large numbers of yearling sockeye were concentrated in Chignik River just below the outlet of Chignik Lake. In sockeye fry and yearlings captured in the lower river were generally larger than those captured in the upper river. Juvenile sockeye in the upper river grew slower than those in most other parts of the watershed. Scale analysis of sockeye salmon spawning in Chignik River showed that these fish entered the ocean at a larger size than did fish reared in Chignik Lake or Chignik River. This suggests that at least part of the progeny of river spawners do not remain in the river, but descend as fry to the brackish estuary, where growth conditions are superior. Upstream movement of schools of yearling sockeye was observed in the upper portions of the river. Such a movement has been observed many times in Chignik River in past years and has at times involved large numbers of fish. Schools of yearling sockeye have been observed to enter Chignik Lake. Fish of the same size group were captured while moving downstream at the lake outlet at night, suggesting a circular movement involving displacement of fish into the river at night and a positive rheotactic response causing them to re-enter the lake during the day. Juvenile sockeye salmon resident in Chignik River may include both progeny of river spawners, and fish which have moved down from Chignik Lake; Chignik Lake is probably the more important source. Chignik River is judged to have a minor role in the production of sockeye salmon, relative to the other rearing areas in the watershed.

Book excerpt: Salmonids are heavily dependent on specific habitat characteristics for survival, yet few studies in Alaska have examined the relationship between habitat and spawning distribution, using remote sensing approaches. To better understand the relationship between Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha spawning distribution and environmental variables like habitat type (e.g., run, riffle, pool), temperature, and proximity to channel islands, optical and thermal imagery were collected on the Togiak and Ongivinuk rivers in southwest Alaska. Object-based image analysis was used to classify and quantify habitat types, while thermal characteristics and the proximity of spawning locations to channel islands were determined in a GIS framework. Object-based image analysis was useful for classifying habitat and may provide a better alternative to pixel-based image analysis. However, rule sets were nontransferable and inconsistent among river reaches, and caution should be taken when these methods are used on large river sections. Chinook Salmon showed a preference for spawning in river runs, 80% of fish spawned in water temperatures between 8.6° and 9.4°C, and nearly 61% of Chinook Salmon spawned within 100 m of a channel island. This study provided a baseline understanding of environmental correlates of spawning for Chinook Salmon at the northern extent of their range.
