Book excerpt: We consider a distributed optimization problem where n nodes, S_I, I\in{1 ..., n}), wish to minimize a common strongly convex function f(x), x=[x_1 ..., x_n]^T, and suppose that node S_I only has control of variable x_I. The nodes locally update their respective variables and periodically exchange their values over noisy channels. Previous studies of this problem have mainly focused on the convergence issue and the analysis of convergence rate. In this work, we focus on the communication energy and study its impact on convergence. In particular, we study the minimum amount of communication energy required for nodes to obtain an \epsilon-minimizer of f(x) in the mean square sense.

Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks continue to get tremendous popularity, as evidenced by the increasing number of applications for these networks. The limiting factors of the sensor nodes, such as their finite energy supplies and their moderate processing abilities, as well as the unreliable wireless medium restrict the performance of wireless sensor networks. Energy efficient communication is a critical design objective for wireless sensor networks which are usually highly energy constrained. To achieve these goals, this thesis describes a distributed approach for solving several optimization problems in wireless sensor network. The idea of distributed signal processing relies on the divide-and-conquer paradigm, which is often used in multiprocessor computers. According to the divide-and-conquer paradigm, a problem is divided into multiple sub-problems of smaller size. Every sensor solves each subproblem by using the same algorithm, and the solution to the original problem is obtained by combining the outputs from the different sensors. By designing appropriate communication protocols and collaborative computational schemes, sensors operate as distributed adaptive filters and generate the desired result. In an incremental mode of cooperation, information flows in a sequential manner from one node to the adjacent node. This mode of operation requires a cyclic pattern of collaboration among the nodes. In a diffusion implementation, on the other hand, each node communicates with all its neighbours as dictated by the network topology. READ FULL ABSTRACT IN THE DOCUMENT.

Book excerpt: This book describes the development of innovative non-centralized optimization-based control schemes to solve economic dispatch problems of large-scale energy systems. Particularly, it focuses on communication and cooperation processes of local controllers, which are integral parts of such schemes. The economic dispatch problem, which is formulated as a convex optimization problem with edge‐based coupling constraints, is solved by using methodologies in distributed optimization over time-varying networks, together with distributed model predictive control, and system partitioning techniques. At first, the book describes two distributed optimization methods, which are iterative and require the local controllers to exchange information with each other at each iteration. In turn, it shows that the sequence produced by these methods converges to an optimal solution when some conditions, which include how the controllers must communicate and cooperate, are satisfied. Further, it proposes an information exchange protocol to cope with possible communication link failures. Finally, the proposed distributed optimization methods are extended to the cases with random communication networks and asynchronous updates. Overall, this book presents a set of improved predictive control and distributed optimization methods, together with a rigorous mathematical analysis of each proposed algorithms. It describes a comprehensive approach to cope with communication and cooperation issues of non-centralized control schemes and show how the improved schemes can be successfully applied to solve the economic dispatch problems of large-scale energy systems.

Book excerpt: Mathematical optimization techniques are among the most successful tools for controlling technical systems optimally with feasibility guarantees. Yet, they are often centralized—all data has to be collected in one central and computationally powerful entity. Methods from distributed optimization overcome this limitation. Classical approaches, however, are often not applicable due to non-convexities. This work develops one of the first frameworks for distributed non-convex optimization.

Book excerpt: This brief focuses on stochastic energy optimization for distributed energy resources in smart grids. Along with a review of drivers and recent developments towards distributed energy resources, this brief presents research challenges of integrating millions of distributed energy resources into the grid. The brief then proposes a novel three-level hierarchical architecture for effectively integrating distributed energy resources into smart grids. Under the proposed hierarchical architecture, distributed energy resource management algorithms at the three levels (i.e., smart home, smart neighborhood, and smart microgrid) are developed in this brief based on stochastic optimization that can handle the involved uncertainties in the system.

Book excerpt: This dissertation develops an interdisciplinary approach to integrating renewable energy resources into energy markets, using tools from optimization theory, power systems, and economics. It advances prior work with the development of a set of tools for securing distributed and fully-decentralized optimization problems, including both algorithmic guards against attacks by malicious nodes, and system architectures which can enable decentralized security checks. Leveraging the emerging technologies of blockchains and smart contracts, it develops a new paradigm of blockchain-secured distributed optimization, demonstrated with simulation of a microgrid which is able to securely operate without oversight from a utility or central operator. As the goal of interdisciplinary research is to show mastery of each field and extend current knowledge by exploring their intersection, the chapters of this dissertation are designed to support that goal: • Chapter 1 provides background on the technical challenges of integrating high amounts of renewable energy into the electricity system, and discusses technologies and policies which can address those challenges. • Chapter 2 introduces the idea of applying optimization tools to energy systems by studying a small-scale energy harvesting system in which batteries and capacitors are used to meet a defined load, and constraints force the use of nonlinear optimization techniques. • Chapter 3 explores how large-scale energy storage systems can be designed and sited to maximize profits from participating in wholesale energy markets, using a linear program which demonstrates how convex optimization tools can be united with energy market data to create scalable tools for modeling large networks. • Chapter 4 expands the study of market-based models by examining the strategic operation of generation resources on a congested network. We use game theory to model participants’ behavior, power flow models to reflect the underlying constraints of the physical network, and robust convex optimization to explore how uncertainty is integrated into decision-making. • Chapter 5 discusses how decentralized optimization models can facilitate scalable optimization tools, and explores the security risks which these optimization models introduce. Tools for detection and mitigation of attacks are explored and tested on a simple problem. Potential architectures for securing decentralized optimization are explored, including blockchains and smart contracts. • Chapter 6 extends this approach by developing a blockchain-secured fully-decentralized optimization for a microgrid dispatch problem, coordinating distributed energy resources. By demonstrating the usefulness of this blockchain-secured optimization model, this culminating chapter shows how difficult optimization models can be scalably solved in a manner which respects privacy while guaranteeing security. • The Appendices present tutorial material on the tools used throughout the paper, and are supplemented by the code in the author’s github repository: https://github.com/emunsing/tutorials.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern active distribution grids are characterized by the increasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs). The proper coordination and scheduling of a large numbers of these DERs can only be achieved at the nexus of new technological approaches and policies, primarily distributed computation and transactive energy. Transactive energy is a control mechanism which uses economic incentives, such as time-of-use or real-time electricity prices, to influence the behaviour of independent agents (i.e. DERs in the grid) as needed by the grid operator. This thesis tackles the problem of DER coordination by considering the role of distributed optimization algorithms in solving the optimal power flow (OPF) problem, when a large number of small scale DERs are present. The OPF problem minimizes costs to operate the grid, while subject to network constraints. The distributed implementation makes large-scale problems computationally tractable, while also maintaining privacy of local information. First, we utilize a new convex formulation of the power grid based on current injection (CI) and McCormick Envelopes, to model distribution grids of meshed topology and unbalanced structure. The OPF problem is then solved for such grid structures, using the distributed proximal atomic coordination (PAC) algorithm, which has several advantages over other distributed algorithms. These advantages include reduced network communication requirements, reduced local computational effort, and improved privacy. The DER coordination problem is then extended to consider storage devices. This requires a multi-period OPF formulation, which is also solved using the PAC algorithm. Results from active configurations of the IEEE 123-bus network corroborate the need for a multi-period optimization approach under high penetration of renewable resources. Finally, we propose a retail market mechanism which can be viewed as a transactive energy scheme within the distribution grid. Through the retail market, DERs are optimally scheduled in an energy market, and leveraged in alert system cases in an ancillary services market. The transactions of the energy market are carried out at each primacy feeder through bilateral agreements between the Distribution System Operator (DSO) and agents representing DERs at feeder buses, leveraging the PAC algorithm. These interactions determine the optimal real-time resource schedules and distributed Locational Marginal Price. The PAC algorithm and proposed market are extensively validated on a real distribution grid in Tokyo, a balanced IEEE 123-bus distribution grid, and a three feeder model using the IEEE 13-bus. The energy market is shown to result in an overall increase in revenue for the DSO.
