Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades the artificial neural networks have been refined and widely used by the researchers and application engineers. We have not witnessed such a large degree of evolution in any other artificial neural network as in the Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) neural network. The ART network remains plastic, or adaptive, in response to significant events and yet remains stable in response to irrelevant events. This stability-plasticity property is a great step towards realizing intelligent machines capable of autonomous learning in real time environment. The main aim of this book is to report a very small sample of the research on the evolution of ART neural network and its applications. Interested readers may refer literature for many more innovations in ART such as Fuzzy ART, ART2, ART2-a, ARTMAP, ARTMAP-PI, ARTMAP-DS, Gaussian ARTMAP, EXACT ART, and ART-EMAP.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a general introduction to the field of neural networks. Thoroughly revised and updated from the previous editions of 1991 and 2000, the current edition concentrates on networks for modeling brain processes involved in cognitive and behavioral functions. Part one explores the philosophy of modeling and the field’s history starting from the mid-1940s, and then discusses past models of associative learning and of short-term memory that provide building blocks for more complex recent models. Part two of the book reviews recent experimental findings in cognitive neuroscience and discusses models of conditioning, categorization, category learning, vision, visual attention, sequence learning, behavioral control, decision making, reasoning, and creativity. The book presents these models both as abstract ideas and through examples and concrete data for specific brain regions. The book includes two appendices to help ground the reader: one reviewing the mathematics used in network modeling, and a second reviewing basic neuroscience at both the neuron and brain region level. The book also includes equations, practice exercises, and thought experiments.

Book excerpt: This tutorial text provides the reader with an understanding of artificial neural networks (ANNs), and their application, beginning with the biological systems which inspired them, through the learning methods that have been developed, and the data collection processes, to the many ways ANNs are being used today. The material is presented with a minimum of math (although the mathematical details are included in the appendices for interested readers), and with a maximum of hands-on experience. All specialized terms are included in a glossary. The result is a highly readable text that will teach the engineer the guiding principles necessary to use and apply artificial neural networks.

Book excerpt: 2.1 Text Summarization “Text summarization is the process of distilling the most important information from a source (or sources) to produce an abridged version for a particular user (or users) and task (or tasks)” [3]. Basic and classical articles in text summarization appear in “Advances in automatic text summarization” [3]. A literature survey on information extraction and text summarization is given by Zechner [7]. In general, the process of automatic text summarization is divided into three stages: (1) analysis of the given text, (2) summarization of the text, (3) presentation of the summary in a suitable output form. Titles, abstracts and keywords are the most common summaries in Academic papers. Usually, the title, the abstract and the keywords are the first, second, and third parts of an Academic paper, respectively. The title usually describes the main issue discussed in the study and the abstract presents the reader a short description of the background, the study and its results. A keyword is either a single word (unigram), e.g.: ‘learning', or a collocation, which means a group of two or more words, representing an important concept, e.g.: ‘machine learning', ‘natural language processing'. Retrieving collocations from text was examined by Smadja [5] and automatic extraction of collocations was examined by Kita et al. [1].

Initially, the con ference was intended for scientists and practitioners as a platform for discussions on theory and application of fuzzy logic. Early on, synergetic links with neural networks were included and the conference evolved gradually to embrace the full spectrum of what is now called Computational Intelligence (CI). Therefore, it seemed logical to launch the 4th Fuzzy Days in 1994 as a conference for CI—one of the world's first conferences featuring fuzzy logic, neural networks and evolu tionary algorithms together in one event. Following this successful tradition, the 6th Fuzzy Days' aim is to provide an international forum for reporting significant results on the theory and application of Cl-methods. Once again, we have received a remarkable number of papers. I would like to express my gratitude to all who have been interested in presenting their work within the framework of this conference and to the members of the programme committee for their valuable work (in this edition each paper was reviewed by five referees). In particular, I wish to thank all keynote and tutorial speakers for their commitment. Last but not least, I am obliged to the Deutsche Forschun- gemeinschaft and Kommunalverband Ruhrgebiet for their financial support.

Book excerpt: The 14th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence: Methodology, Systems, Applications (AIMSA 2010) was held in Varna, Bulgaria, during September 8–10, 2010. The AIMSA conference series has provided a biennial forum for the presen- tion of artificial intelligence research and development since 1984. The conference covers the full range of topics in artificial intelligence (AI) and related disciplines and provides an ideal forum for international scientific exchange between Central/Eastern Europe and the rest of the world. The 2010 AIMSA edition continued this tradition. For AIMSA 2010, we decided to place special emphasis on the application and leverage of AI technologies in the context of knowledge societies where knowledge creation, accessing, acquiring, and sharing empower individuals and communities. A number of AI techniques play a key role in responding to these challenges. AI is - tensively used in the development of systems for effective management and flexible and personalized access to large knowledge bases, in the Semantic Web technologies that enable sharing and reuse of and reasoning over semantically annotated resources, in the emerging social Semantic Web applications that aid humans to collaboratively build semantics, in the construction of intelligent environments for supporting (human and agent) learning, etc. In building such intelligent applications, AI techniques are typically combined with results from other disciplines such as the social sciences, distributed systems, databases, digital libraries, information retrieval, service-oriented applications, etc.

It has arguably been the preeminent conference in the field, even as neural network conferences have proliferated and specialized. As the number of conferences has grown, its strongest competition has migrated away from an emphasis on neural networks. IJCNN has embraced the proliferation of spin-off and related fields (see the topic list, below), while maintaining a core emphasis befitting its name. It has also succeeded in enforcing an emphasis on quality.

Book excerpt: Adaptive Resonance Theory Microchips describes circuit strategies resulting in efficient and functional adaptive resonance theory (ART) hardware systems. While ART algorithms have been developed in software by their creators, this is the first book that addresses efficient VLSI design of ART systems. All systems described in the book have been designed and fabricated (or are nearing completion) as VLSI microchips in anticipation of the impending proliferation of ART applications to autonomous intelligent systems. To accommodate these systems, the book not only provides circuit design techniques, but also validates them through experimental measurements. The book also includes a chapter tutorially describing four ART architectures (ART1, ARTMAP, Fuzzy-ART and Fuzzy-ARTMAP) while providing easily understandable MATLAB code examples to implement these four algorithms in software. In addition, an entire chapter is devoted to other potential applications for real-time data clustering and category learning.
