Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three types of collision-free channel access protocols for ad hoc networks are presented. These protocols are derived from a novel approach to contention resolution that allows contending entities to elect one or multiple winners for channel access in any given contention context (e.g., a time slot) in a distributed fashion. In multihop wireless networks, the only required information for each entity is the identifiers of its neighbors one and two hops away. The new protocols are shown to be fair and capable of achieving maximal utilization of the channel bandwidth. The delay and throughput characteristics of the contention resolution algorithms are analyzed, and the performance of the three types of channel access protocols is studied by simulations and compared with that of optimal static scheduling algorithms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles of Ad Hoc Networking presents a systematic introduction to the fundamentals of ad hoc networks. An ad-hoc network is a small network, especially one with wireless or temporary plug-in connections. Typically, some of the network devices are part of the network only for the duration of a communications session or, in the case of mobile or portable devices, while in some close proximity to the rest of the network. These networks can range from small and static systems with constrained power resources to larger-scale dynamic and mobile environments. Wireless ad hoc networks facilitate numerous and diverse applications for establishing survivable dynamic systems in emergency and rescue operations, disaster relief and intelligent home settings. Principles of Ad Hoc Networking: Introduces the essential characteristics of ad hoc networks such as: physical layer, medium access control, Bluetooth discovery and network formation, wireless network programming and protocols. Explains the crucial components involved in ad-hoc networks in detail with numerous exercises to aid understanding. Offers key results and merges practical methodologies with mathematical considerations. Principles of Ad Hoc Networking will prove essential reading for graduate students in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics and Physics as well as researchers in the field of ad hoc networking, professionals in wireless telecoms, and networking system developers. These protocols are based on a distributed contention resolution algorithm that operates at each node based on the list of direct contenders (one-hop neighbors or incident links) and indirect interferences (two-hop neighbors and related links). Depending on the activation scheme (node activation or link activation), a network node uses the identifiers of its neighbors one and two hops away to elect deterministically one or multiple winners for channel access in each contention context (e.g., a time slot or a frequency band). The protocols are shown to be fair and capable of achieving maximum utilization of the channel bandwidth. The delay and throughput characteristics of the channel access protocols is studied by simulations.

Book excerpt: We present the hybrid activation multiple access (HAMA) protocol for ad hoc networks. Unlike previous channel access scheduling protocols that activate either nodes or links only, HAMA is a node-activation channel access protocol that also maximizes the chance of link activations using time- and code-division schemes. HAMA only requires identifiers of the neighbors within two hops from each node to schedule channel access. Using this neighborhood information, each node determines whether to transmit in the current time slot on a dynamically assigned spreading code. A neighbor protocol supplements HAMA with up-to-date two-hop neighborhood information by reliably propagating the one-hop neighbor updates through a novel random access technique. The throughput and delay characteristics of HAMA in randomly-generated multihop wireless networks are studied by analyses and simulations. The results of the analyses show that HAMA achieves higher channel utilization in ad hoc networks than a distributed scheduling scheme based on node activation, similar throughout as a well-known scheduling algorithm based on complete topology information, and much higher throughout than the ideal CSMA and CSMA/CA protocols.

Book excerpt: We develop channel aware scheduling and resource allocation schemes with cross-layer optimization for several problems in multiuser wireless networks. We consider problems of distributed opportunistic scheduling, where multiple users contend to access the same set of channels. Instead of scheduling users to the earliest available idle channels, we also take the instantaneous channel quality into consideration and schedule the users only when the channel quality is sufficiently high. This can lead to significant gains in throughput compared to system where PHY and MAC layers are designed separately and the wireless fading channels are abstracted as time invariant, fixed rate channels for scheduling purposes. We first consider opportunistic spectrum access in a cognitive radio network, where a secondary user (SU) share the spectrum opportunistically with incumbent primary users (PUs). Similar to earlier works on distributed opportunistic scheduling (DOS), we maximize the throughput of SU by formulating the channel access problem as a maximum rate-of-return problem in the optimal stopping theory framework. We show that the optimal channel access strategy is a pure threshold policy, namely the SU decides to use or skip transmission opportunities by comparing the channel qualities to a fixed threshold. We further increase the spectrum utilization by interleaving SU's packets with periodic sensing to detect PU's return. We jointly optimize the rate threshold and the packet transmission time to maximize the average throughput of SU, while limiting interference to PU. Next, we develop channel-aware opportunistic spectrum access strategies in a more general cognitive radio network with multiple SUs. Here, we additionally take into account the collisions and complex interaction between SUs and sharing of resources between them. We derive strategies for both cooperative settings where SUs maximize their sum total of throughputs, as well as non-cooperative game theoretic settings, where each SU tries to maximize its own throughput. We show that the optimal schemes for both scenarios are pure threshold policies. In the non-cooperative case, we establish the existence of Nash equilibrium and develop best response strategies that can converge to equilibria, with SUs relying only on their local observations. We study the trade-off between maximal throughput in the cooperative setting and fairness in the non-cooperative setting, and schemes based on utility functions and pricing that mitigate this tradeoff. In addition to maximizing throughput and fair sharing of resources, it is important to consider network/scheduling delays for QoS performance of delay-sensitive applications. We study DOS under both network-wide and user-specific average delay constraints. We take a stochastic Lagrangian approach and characterize the corresponding optimal scheduling policies accordingly, and show that they have a pure threshold structure. Next, we consider the use of different types of channel quality information, i.e., channel state information (CSI) and channel distribution information (CDI) in the opportunistic scheduling design for MIMO ad hoc networks. CSI is highly dynamic in nature and provides time diversity in the wireless channel, but is difficult to track. CDI offers temporal stability, but is incapable of capturing the instantaneous channel conditions. We design a new class of cross-layer opportunistic channel access scheduling framework for MIMO networks where CDI is used in the network context to group the simultaneous transmission links for spatial channel access and CSI is used in the link context to decide when and which link group should transmit based on a pre designed threshold. We thereby reap the benefits of both the temporal stability of CDI and the time diversity of CSI. Finally, we consider a novel application of cross layer optimization for communication of progressive coded images over OFDM wireless fading channels. We first consider adaptive modulation based on the instantaneous channel state information. An algorithm is proposed to allocate power and constellation size at each subchannel by maximizing the throughput. We next consider both the variance and the average of the throughput when deciding the constellation size for adaptive modulation. Simulation results confirm that cross-layer optimization with adaptive modulation enhances system performance.

Book excerpt: Ad hoc networks have very unique features, such as dynamic topologies, relatively limited bandwidth and wireless signal propagation schemes, which present difficult challenges for wireless communication. We propose control mechanisms for channel access scheduling and topology control in ad hoc networks, respectively, which utilize the neighborhood information within two hops to cope with the difficulties of communicating in ad hoc networks. First, we present the neighbor-aware contention resolution (NCR) algorithm, and analyze its generic performance with regard to the contention delay and system throughput. The required neighbor information in NCR for ad hoc networks is acquired through the neighbor protocol, which is based on a random channel access mechanism and a reliable message propagation scheme using retransmissions. Then, four channel access protocols based on NCR are presented, namely NAMA, LAMA, PAMA and HAMA, which correspond to node-, link-, pair- wise- and hybrid-activation multiple access protocols, respectively. These protocols are aimed at ad hoc networks with omnidirectional antennas, and their performance is analyzed. Furthermore, channel access protocols, adapted from NAMA and PAMA, are considered for heterogeneous ad hoc networks that include unidirectional links, which may occur due to power and signal propagation differences between wireless stations.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled "Distributed Scheduling in Multihop Ad Hoc Networks" Submitted by Sun Yijiang for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in February 2008 A multihop ad hoc network is a network formed by multiple nodes with- out the aid of any centralized administration, and data traffic is typically forwarded by multiple intermediate nodes before reaching its destination. In this thesis, we focus on improving QoS of end-to-end traffic flows in multihop ad hoc networks through packet transmission scheduling. Our approach was to design a framework in which existing schedul- ingalgorithmsoriginallydesigned forinfrastructure-basedwirelessnetworks could be adapted to multihop ad hoc networks. While infrastructure-based wireless scheduling has been studied extensively and most of the proposed algorithms handle the characteristics of wireless medium in an effective and fairway, ourapproach aimstogeneralizetheadaptationofthese algorithms to ad hoc networks and thus to make maximum use of the existing resource of wireless scheduling. iThe framework consists of two sets of mechanisms. The first one is an end-to-end service compensation mechanism. Each multihop flow is asso- ciated with some QoS requirement, which is requested and granted in the form of the desired service rate. The achieved rate is estimated at the des- tination and fed back to the source periodically. Both the desired rate and achieved rate of a multihop flow are propagated from the source node to all its downstream relaying nodes. With this information, a compensation- capable scheduling algorithm originally designed for infrastructure-based wireless networks can be adapted to each ad hoc node for error compensa- tion. The second part of the framework is a set of mechanisms for distributed opportunistic scheduling in multihop wireless ad hoc networks. The frame- work includes a wireless link state estimation mechanism, a requirement on medium access control protocol and two mechanisms to limit the access of the wireless medium. The link state estimation mechanism provides the necessary status of each wireless link and thus enables the adaptation of various opportunistic scheduling algorithms. The performance ofthe proposed framework was evaluated by computer simulations. Theresultsshowed thattheframeworkcaneffectivelycompen- sate flows that suffer sporadic burst channel errors in an end-to-end fashion and provides robust outcome fairness in the presence of channel errors.
