Book excerpt: In a computational tour-de-force, this volume wipes away a host of problems related to location discovery in wireless ad-hoc sensor networks. WASNs have recognized potential in many applications that are location-dependent, yet are heavily constrained by factors such as cost and energy consumption. Their “ad-hoc” nature, with direct rather than mediated connections between a network of wireless devices, adds another layer of difficulty. Basing this work entirely on data-driven, coordinated algorithms, the author’s aim is to present location discovery techniques that are highly accurate—and which fit user criteria. The research deploys nonparametric statistical methods and relies on the concept of joint probability to construct error (including location error) models and environmental field models. It also addresses system issues such as the broadcast and scheduling of the beacon. Reporting an impressive accuracy gain of almost 17 percent, and organized in a clear, sequential manner, this book represents a stride forward in wireless localization.

In this booklet, we study research problems associated with node localization in wireless sensor networks. We describe sensor network localization problems in terms of a detection and estimation framework and we emphasize specifically a cooperative process where sensors with known locations are used to localize nodes at unknown locations. In this class of problems, even if the location of a node is known, the wireless links and transmission modalities between two nodes may be unknown. In this case, sensor nodes are used to detect the location and estimate pertinent data transmission activities between nodes. In addition to the broader problem of sensor localization, this booklet studies also specific localization measurements such as time of arrival (TOA), received signal strength (RSS), and direction of arrival (DOA). The sequential localization algorithm, which uses a subset of sensor nodes to estimate nearby sensor nodes' locations is discussed in detail. Extensive bibliography is given for those readers who want to delve further into specific topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the contributed papers and invited talks presented at the 1stInternationalWorkshoponAlgorithmicAspectsofWirelessSensorNetworks (ALGOSENSORS 2004), which was held July 16, 2004, in Turku, Finland, - located with the 31st International Colloquium on Automata, Languages, and Programming (ICALP 2004). Wireless ad hoc sensor networks have become a very important research subject due to their potential to provide diverse services in numerous appli- tions. The realization of sensor networks requires intensive technical research and development e?orts, especially in power-aware scalable wireless ad hoc c- munications protocols, due to their unusual application requirements and severe constraints. On the other hand, a solid theoretical background seems necessary for sensor networks to achieve their full potential. It is an algorithmic challenge to achieve e?cient and robust realizations of such large, highly dynamic, complex, n- conventional networking environments. Features, including the huge number of sensor devices involved, the severe power, computational and memory limi- tions, their dense deployment and frequent failures, pose new design, analysis and implementation challenges. This event is intended to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to present their contributions related to all aspects of wireless sensor networks. Topics of interest for ALGOSENSORS 2004 were: – Modeling of speci?c sensor networks. – Methods for ad hoc deployment. – Algorithms for sensor localization and tracking of mobile users. – Dynamic sensor networks. – Hierarchical clustering architectures. – Attribute-based named networks. – Routing: implosion issues and resource management. – Communication protocols. – Media access control in sensor networks. – Simulators for sensor networks.

Book excerpt: Ad hoc, rapidly deployed wireless sensor networks require lightweight algorithms due to the simplicity of the sensor nodes. In this work, we consider a wireless sensor network consisting of a single sink node at the center of a field of randomly distributed low-cost sensors. Following the guideline of co-design, we propose a distributed partition-based localization algorithm and a distributed energy-efficient geographic routing algorithm, and evaluate their individual performances as well as joint performance under practical application scenarios. Simulations confirm that our co-design approach achieves desirable performance economically. The proposed approach should be especially useful to professionals in Wireless Sensor Network fields, or anyone else who may be considering utilizing ad hoc, rapidly deployed wireless sensor networks consisting of low-cost sensors.

Book excerpt: The desire for precise knowledge about the location of a moving object at any time instant has motivated a great deal of scientific research recently. This is owing to a steady expansion of the range of enabling devices and technologies, as well as the need for seamless solutions for location-based services. Besides localization accuracy, a common requirement for emerging solutions is that they are cost-abstemious, both in terms of the financial and computational cost. Hence, development of localization strategies from already deployed technologies, e.g., from different terrestrial radio frequency sources is of great practical interest. Amongst other, these include localization strategies based on received signal strength (RSS), time of arrival, angle of arrival (AoA) or a combination of them. RSS-AoA-based Target Localization and Tracking in Wireless Sensor Networks presents recent advances in developing algorithms for target localization and tracking, reflecting the state-of-the-art algorithms and research achievements in target localization and tracking based on hybrid (RSS-AoA) measurements.Technical topics discussed in the book include:Centralized RSS-AoA-based Target LocalizationDistributed RSS-AoA-based Target LocalizationRSS-AoA-based Target Tracking via Maximum A Posteriori EstimatorRSS-AoA-based Target Tracking via Kalman FilterRSS-AoA-based via Sensor NavigationThis book is of interest for personnel in telecommunications and surveillance industries, military, smart systems, as well as academic staff and postgraduate/research students in telecommunications, signal processing, and non-smooth and convex optimization.

Book excerpt: As optimization researchers tackle larger and larger problems, scale interactions play an increasingly important role. One general strategy for dealing with a large or difficult problem is to partition it into smaller ones, which are hopefully much easier to solve, and then work backwards towards the solution of original problem, using a solution from a previous level as a starting guess at the next level. This volume contains 22 chapters highlighting some recent research. The topics of the chapters selected for this volume are focused on the development of new solution methodologies, including general multilevel solution techniques, for tackling difficult, large-scale optimization problems that arise in science and industry. Applications presented in the book include but are not limited to the circuit placement problem in VLSI design, a wireless sensor location problem, optimal dosages in the treatment of cancer by radiation therapy, and facility location.
