Par ailleurs, la proximité est-elle synonyme de fusion ? Dominique Depenne s'attache ici à différencier les trois termes : distance, proximité et fusion. La proximité est ce qui s'oppose radicalement et conjointement à la distance et à la fusion. Cet essai dénonce l'idéologie de la "mise à distance", destructrice de toute relation et rejette, conjointement, toute idée de fusion. La fusion annule Autrui par absorption tandis que la distance détruit les possibilités de relation par l'exclusion de l'Autre. Prenant appui sur l'oeuvre d'Emmanuel Lévinas, l'auteur soutient qu'il n'existe qu'un "lieu" pour établir une relation : la proximité, qui seule permet l'Accueil et la Rencontre éthiques entre l'accompagnant et l'accompagné. Cet ouvrage invite tous les professionnels du travail social, quels que soient leurs métiers et leurs postes, à reconsidérer la relation et plus spécifiquement : la relation d'accompagnement.

Cette évolution dans l’accompagnement était prévisible d’autant que, dès leur création, il a toujours été question de proposer « des modalités diversifiées, modulables, souples et évolutives », de « favoriser le maintien du lien des intéressés avec leur milieu familial et social » et de soutenir le positionnement suivant : « toutes les fois que cela est possible, les enfants, adolescents ou jeunes adultes résident dans leur famille ». Le concept de « Dispositif » répond à ces besoins de proximité et prend également en compte le problème de la distance. Mais de quelle distance est-il question aujourd’hui ? Il s’agit de relever les défis liés à la proximité géographique, à la proximité relationnelle et affective, aux proximités immatérielles : intellectuelle, cognitive, théorique ou conceptuelle... Il s’agit en effet, de relever ces défis, parce que le Dispositif-ITEP (DITEP) construit des réponses au plus près des besoins de l’enfant, de l’adolescent, du jeune adulte. Cette proximité liée à ces besoins peut articuler des indications d’internat à visée soignante, de semi internat, de service d’accompagnement à domicile ou en milieu ordinaire, de modalités de scolarisation personnalisées. C’est dans la proximité avec les parents, les familles, que s’élaborent les projets d’accompagnement ; que se décide un parcours singulier, lequel peut inclure des temps d’accueil de jour, d’accueil de nuit, d’intervention ambulatoire ; un parcours dans le DITEP articulé avec les autres institutions intervenant dans le projet.
