Book Synopsis Madness Unchained by : Lee Fratantuono
Download or read book Madness Unchained written by Lee Fratantuono and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims at providing a coherent guide to the entirety of Virgil's Aeneid, with analysis of every scene and, in some cases, every line of crucial passages. The book tries to provide a guide to the vast bibliography and scholarly apparatus that has grown around Virgil studies (especially over the past century), and to offer some critical study of what Virgil's purpose and intent may have been in crafting his response to Augustus' political ascendancy in Rome, Rome's history of near-constant civil strife, and the myths of Rome's origins and their conflicting Trojan, Greek, and native Italian origins.
Download or read book Virgil's Aeneid written by Kenneth Quinn and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-28 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1968, Virgil’s Aeneid is to help all who approach the long and difficult poem seriously (in Latin or in English) to read it with discerning appreciation. This is not a handbook, nor is it a commentary: it is a critical description, from a number of aspects, of a poetic structure. A detailed analysis of the twelve books is preceded by a preliminary exploration of the poem’s central purpose, a careful reconstruction of the historical and artistic circumstances, and a description of the main outlines of the poem’s structure; two further chapters provide a discussion of a number of theoretical problem and an analysis of the verbal fabric. This book will be of interest to students of classical literature and history.

Download or read book Eneide 11 written by Virgile and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive commentary on "Aeneid" 11. The commentary treats fully matters of linguistic and textual interpretation, metre and prosody, grammar, lexicon and idiom, of Roman behaviour, social and ritual, as well as Virgil's sources and the literary tradition. New critical approaches and developments in Virgilian studies have been taken into account with economy and fairness. The Latin text is presented with a facing English translation. The commentary is followed by an appendix on Penthesilea and the Epic Cycle and a second appendix which discusses the weaknesses of "Aeneid" 11. The book concludes with English and Latin indices. In approach and learning, this commentary continues Nicholas Horsfall's impressive work as a commentator and will advance our understanding of the "Aeneid" and the poet Virgil.
Book Synopsis The Speeches in Vergil's Aeneid by : Gilbert Highet
Download or read book The Speeches in Vergil's Aeneid written by Gilbert Highet and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Aeneid men, women, gods, and goddesses are characterized by the speeches assigned to them far more than by descriptions of their appearance or behavior. Most of the speeches are highly emotional and individualized, reminding us of the most powerful utterances of Greek tragedy. Gilbert Highet has analyzed all the speeches in the Aeneid, using statistical techniques as well as more traditional methods of scholarship. He has classified the speeches; identified their models in earlier Greek and Latin literature; analyzed their structure; and discussed their importance in the portrayal of character. He finds that Vergil used standard rhetorical devices with discretion, and that his models were poets rather than orators. Nevertheless, this study shows Vergil to have been a master dramatist as well as a great epic poet. Originally published in 1972.
