Book Synopsis Problems of Reason: Kant in Context by : Antonino Falduto
Download or read book Problems of Reason: Kant in Context written by Antonino Falduto and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to make a significant contribution to the debate surrounding the renaissance of Kant studies in the last few decades, with a particular emphasis upon some ‘problems of reason’. Like no other, Kant covered the entire breadth of the modern debate concerning the concept of reason and its forms. Accordingly, despite the range of topics this volume inevitably deals with, Immanuel Kant remains the common point of reference for all contributions. The volume is divided into two sections. The first section is dedicated to Kant’s philosophy in particular and its relationship with the philosophies of Kant’s predecessors. From the perspective of the history of philosophy, interpretations of the significance of different philosophical traditions concerning Kant’s thought will be given, and of the relationship of Kant’s thought to the problems of reason with which Kant and his predecessors dealt. The second section is dedicated to the legacy of Kant’s philosophy. The relevance of the concept of rationality for the genesis and systematics of post-Kantian ideas of rationality will be discussed, and the potential of Kant’s critical philosophy – for contemporary thought as well – will be examined.

Book Synopsis Jean-Jacques Dortous de Mairan and the Geneva Connection by : Ellen McNiven Hine
Download or read book Jean-Jacques Dortous de Mairan and the Geneva Connection written by Ellen McNiven Hine and published by Oxford : Voltaire Foundation. This book was released on 1996 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study illustrates the significance of Jean-Jacques Dortous de Mairan's networking in the spread of Enlightenment thought. It focuses primarily on the unpublished correspondence between Mairan and the Geneva scientists, Firmin Abauzit, Gabriel Cramer, Jean Jallabert and Charles Bonnet. Mairan was an assiduous correspondent whose letters reveal the progress of scientific thought in the first three quarters of the eighteenth century. Despite the high regard in which of his contemporaries, he has been, until recently, relatively neglected by Enlightenment scholars. This is the first full-length study devoted to Mairan's relations with scientists in other countries, to the process of cross-fertilisation in the production of scientific knowledge, and to his considerable influence on the development of scientific thought on key issues. The topics covered in the letters range from the Shape of the Earth and vis vivacontroversies and the medical powers of electricity, to the nature of the Seichesin the Lac du Léman and the origin of monsters. One of the major interests of the correspondence is Mairan's obvious fascination with Newton. Neglect of his contribution to the history of ideas can be partly explained by the fact that he was unfairly considered a 'last-ditch' Cartesian in a triumphantly Newtonian world. The detailed analysis of the letters in this study amply shows a constant preoccupation with both the Opticks and the Principiaand a fairly sophisticated understanding of scientific method. The letters abound in references to other scientists, such as the Bernoullis, Nollet, Dufay and Maupertuis. They provide an exciting, unguarded and 'behind-the-scenes' view of scientific developments before they were finalised and appeared in published works. It is particularly revealing, therefore, to compare the letters to Mairan's contributions to the Mémoires de l'Académie royale des sciences, his early dissertations, and his mature works. Mairan's unpublished correspondence with Geneva scientists is a treasure-house of information on personalities, ideas and controversies of crucial importance to the international scientific community from 1717 to 1769.
Book Synopsis Aepinus's Essay on the Theory of Electricity and Magnetism by : Roderick Weir Home
Download or read book Aepinus's Essay on the Theory of Electricity and Magnetism written by Roderick Weir Home and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in St. Petersburg in 1759, F.U.T. Aepinus's Tenuimen theoriae electricilatis el magnetismi was one of the outstanding achievements of eighteenth-century physics. Its rigorous mathematical investigation of electricity and magnetism was an important and innovative departure from the primarily qualitative and nonmathematical treatments that preceded it. P. J. Connor's translation of the original Latin edition is the first to appear in any western European language, and the introductory monograph and notes by R. W. Home provide a far more definitive account of Aepinus's life and work than has heretofore been attempted. Originally published in 1979. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
