Book excerpt: The last objective was met by simulating a number of mortality scenarios using both theoretical and field-based seasonal estimates. Results of this study indicated that overall average fishing mortality for Florida bass in central Florida is relatively low, but much higher fishing mortality at Lake Santa Fe. Additionally, this study found simulated seasonal fluctuations in mortality could bias fishing mortality estimates derived from annual tag-return information. This was especially true for scenarios that simulated relatively high natural mortality rates. Thus, there is a need to evaluate fishing mortality at multiple spatial and temporal scales. For some fisheries this may be easy, as mortality rates remain relatively constant over time, but others may be more difficult. Thus, I suggest a two-tiered approach with 1) periodic (e.g., 5-10 year intervals) estimation of regional fishing mortality across lakes, and 2) site-specific estimates of mortality components when fishing mortality is suspected to be high, or when evaluating management regulations.

Book excerpt: Despite the increasing importance of the red drum Sciaenops ocellatus recreational fishery, little is known about mortality rates of caught and released adult red drum. In this study, short-term hooking mortality rates (3-d) of adult red drum caught on 7/0 j-style hooks and 16/0 circle ('tuna') hooks from the Neuse River, North Carolina were determined via ultrasonic telemetry (2000) and confinement in field enclosures (2001). From June to September 2000, 22 red drum (928-1180 mm fork length; FL) were angled, tagged with ultrasonic transmitters, and released. An overall short-term mortality rate of 5.7% was determined for 17 fish. Due to the limited sample size, no attempt was made to model the factors associated with mortality. From June to September 2001, 112 red drum (880-1250 mm FL) were angled and held in net pens for 3 d to assess short-term mortality. An overall mortality rate of 6.7% was determined for 104 fish. Logistic regression analysis indicated that hook position (P = 0.012) and surface salinity (P = 0.002) were significantly related to mortality However, fish size (FL), sex, surface water temperature, depth, landing time, handling time, transport time, and hook type were not significantly related to mortality. Logistic regression analysis also indicated that hook position was dependent on hook type (P = 0.002) and sex (P = 0.015), but not fork length, surface water temperature, and depth. Approximately 52% percent of fish caught with j-style hooks were deep hooked, compared with 4.2% of those caught with circle hooks. A larger percentage of fish deep hooked with j-style hooks died compared to those deep hooked with circle hooks (15.9% vs. 0%, respectively). Necropsy analysis of five mortalities (all deep hooked) indicated extensive internal hemorrhaging and damage to tissues and organs. These data suggest the conservation goal of reducing post-release mortality on these fish can be achieved through directed efforts at either promoting or requiring cer.

This literature review offers a survey of mitigation measures and techniques that have been developed and tested around the world, aiming to address both the incidental catch of highly mobile species – specifically, cetaceans, seabirds, sharks and rays, and sea turtles – and depredation caused by dolphins. Based on research detailed in over 300 documents, including peer-reviewed publications, reports from international organizations and papers available on the internet, most of the mitigation techniques illustrated are still under development, with only a few already adopted through legislation. The selected mitigation measures are grouped by main types of fishing gear – gillnets and trammel nets, longlines and lines, trawls, purse seines, traps and pots – and further subdivided according to which of the four main groups of vulnerable species – cetaceans, seabirds, sharks and rays, or sea turtles – they are designed to protect. Book excerpt: Pacific salmon are an important biological and economic resource of countries of the North Pacific rim. They are also a unique group of fish possessing unusually complex life histories. There are seven species of Pacific salmon, five occurring on both the North American and Asian continents (sockeye, pink, chum, chinook, and coho) and two (masu and amago) only in Asia. The life cycle of the Pacific salmon begins in the autumn when the adult female deposits eggs that are fertilized in gravel beds in rivers or lakes. The young emerge from the gravel the following spring and will either migrate immediately to salt water or spend one or more years in a river or lake before migrating. Migrations in the ocean are extensive during the feeding and growing phase, covering thousands of kilometres. After one or more years the maturing adults find their way back to their home river, returning to their ancestral breeding grounds to spawn. They die after spawning and the eggs in the gravel signify a new cycle. Upon this theme Pacific salmon have developed many variations, both between as well as within species. Pacific Salmon Life Histories provides detailed descriptions of the different life phases through which each of the seven species passes. Each chapter is written by a scientist who has spent years studying and observing a particular species of salmon. Some of the topics covered are geographic distribution, transplants, freshwater life, ocean life, development, growth, feeding, diet, migration, and spawning behaviour. The text is richly supplemented by numerous maps, illustrations, colour plates, and tables and there is a detailed general index, as well as a useful geographical index.
