Book excerpt: This book was written on the assumption that the admission of a new state into the Union is always a matter of some historical importance, and that the facts of such admission should be made available for the reader of history. In the case of West Virginia prejudice and partisanship have tended to obscure the exact truth, and "The Disruption of Virginia" is an attempt to present an unbiased account of the strange course of events in the history of Virginia from the time of Lincoln's election to the Presidency to the month of June, 1863, when West Virginia was formally admitted into the Union. -- Preface.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Disruption of Virginia This book was written on the assumption that the admission of a new state into the Union is always a matter of some historical importance, and that the facts of such admission should be made available for the reader of history. In the case of West Virginia prejudice and partisanship have tended to obscure the exact truth, and "The Disruption of Virginia" is an attempt to present an unbiased account of the strange course of events in the history of Virginia from the time of Lincolns election to the Presidency to the month of June, 1863, when West Virginia was formally admitted into the Union. The author has no grudges to satisfy and no patron to please. If he seems harsh in his opinions and conclusions regarding the irregular and inexpedient methods employed in cutting off the western counties of Virginia and forming them into a new state it is due to the conviction that an unnecessary wrong was committed, a wrong that helped not at all in Lincolns prosecution of the Civil War. He is convinced that not only was the act unconstitutional, but that it was not desired by more than a small minority of the people of the new state. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate disruption is often discussed on a global scale, affording many a degree of detachment from what is happening in their own backyards. Yet the consequences of global warming are of an increasingly acute and serious nature. In Virginia Climate Fever, environmental journalist Stephen Nash brings home the threat of climate change to the state of Virginia. Weaving together a compelling mix of data and conversations with both respected scientists and Virginians most immediately at risk from global warming’s effects, the author details how Virginia’s climate has already begun to change. In engaging prose and layman’s terms, Nash argues that alteration in the environment will affect not only the state’s cities but also hundreds of square miles of urban and natural coastal areas, the 60 percent of the state that is forested, the Chesapeake Bay, and the near Atlantic, with accompanying threats such as the potential spread of infectious disease. The narrative offers striking descriptions of the vulnerabilities of the state’s many beautiful natural areas, around which much of its tourism industry is built. While remaining respectful of the controversy around global warming, Nash allows the research to speak for itself. In doing so, he offers a practical approach to and urgent warning about the impending impact of climate change in Virginia.

Book excerpt: Harris maintains that Lincoln held a fundamentally conservative position on the process of reintegrating the South, one that permitted a large measure of self-reconstruction, and that he did not modify his position late in the war. He examines the reasoning and ideology behind Lincoln's policies, describes what happened when military and civil agents tried to implement them at the local level, and evaluates Lincoln's successes and failures in bringing his restoration efforts to closure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eye-opening history evoking the disruptive first decade of the twenty-first century in America. Dubya. The 9/11 terrorist attacks. Enron and WorldCom. The Iraq War. Hurricane Katrina. The disruptive nature of the internet. An anxious aging population redefining retirement. The gay community demanding full civil rights. A society becoming ever more “brown.” The housing bubble and the Great Recession. The historic election of Barack Obama—and the angry Tea Party reaction. The United States experienced a turbulent first decade of the 21st century, tumultuous years of economic crises, social and technological change, and war. This “lost decade” (2000–2010) was bookended by two financial crises: the dot-com meltdown, followed by the Great Recession. Banks deemed “too big to fail” were rescued when the federal government bailed them out, but meanwhile millions lost their homes to foreclosure and witnessed the wipeout of their retirement savings. The fallout from the Great Recession led to the hyper-polarized society of the years that followed, when populists ran amok on both the left and the right and Americans divided into two distinct tribes. A Decade of Disruption is a timely re-examination of the recent past that reveals how we’ve arrived at our current era of cultural division.

Weighing in on contentious issues within established scholarship while also breaking ground in areas long neglected by scholars, the contributors examine such concerns as the war’s effect on slavery in the state, the wartime intersection of race and religion, and the development of Confederate social networks. They also shed light on topics long disputed by historians, such as Virginia’s decision to secede from the Union, the development of Confederate nationalism, and how Virginians chose to remember the war after its close.
