Book excerpt: Optical properties of carbon nanotubes have recently attracted considerable amount of attention. Due to there direct band gap material characteristic these and dimension of the order of nano meters they find potential applications in the field of nano photonics. Thus the optical study of carbon nanotubes is important for both fundamental research and for the next generation technical applications. In this thesis single walled carbon nanotubes were dispersed in various encapsulates such as surfactants, polymers, proteins etc to separate them individually and study there optical properties. The individually dispersed single walled carbon nanotubes displayed unique absorbance spectra. The optical absorption spectrum of a particular tube is expected to be dominated by a series of relatively sharp inter-band transitions, at energies associated with the van Hove singularities, the absorbance spectrum obtained on our samples were consistent with this expectation. Our samples also showed sharp photoluminescence peaks mostly from the semiconducting single walled carbon nanotubes. The detailed overlap of the absorbance spectra and photoluminescence spectra lead us to believe that our samples contain mainly individual tubes encapsulated in one of the surfactants or polymers. Thin film transistors (TFT) were made with a mesh of single walled carbon nanotubes as the active channel on top of a silicon/silicon oxide substrate, with silicon acting as a back gate and titanium/gold electrodes were evaporated on top of the nanotube film. Photocurrent properties of these thin films were investigated and they showed a huge change in the photocurrent in the presence and absence of the laser light. Thin films of carbon nanotubes were also deposited on rectangular silicon substrates and the influence of applied strain in the presence of laser light was investigated. These films showed a huge change in resistance on application of mechanical strain. Raman measurements were also performed on these thin films and the obtained radial breathing mode (RBM) data helped resolve the diameter of many single walled carbon nanotubes.

Book excerpt: Dispersion and morphology of carbon nanotubes as well as enhancement for rubber reinforcement are studied. Several approaches including surfactant aids, functionalization and plasma treatment are used to assist dispersion. Several characterization methods are used to assess both the degree of dispersion and the level of reinforcement. Small angle light scattering is carried out as a primary tool to assess structure and dispersion of nanotubes treated through these approaches Stress-strain measurement and dynamic mechanical analysis are performed on elastomeric composites to study polymer reinforcement. These results are divided into five sections. The first section focuses on dispersion of untreated and acid-treated multi-walled carbon nanofibers (MWNF) suspended in water. Light scattering data provide the first insights into the mechanism by which surface treatment promotes dispersion. Both acid-treated and untreated nanofibers exhibit hierarchical morphology consisting of small-scale aggregates (bundles) that agglomerate to form fractal clusters that eventually precipitate. Although the morphology of the aggregates and agglomerates is nearly independent of surface treatment, their time evolution is quite different. Acid oxidation has little effect on bundle morphology. Rather acid treatment inhibits agglomeration of the bundles. The second section focuses on dispersion of the solubilized nanofibers. Light scattering data indicate that PEG-functionalized sample is dispersed at small rod-like bundle (side-by-side aggregate) level. Solubilization is achieved not by disrupting small-scale size-by-side bundles, but mainly by completely inhibiting large-scale agglomeration. The third section focuses on dispersion of plasma-treated carbon nanofibers. Comparison of untreated and plasma-treated nanofibers indicates that plasma treatment facilitates dispersion of nanofibers. The fourth section focuses on dispersion and structure of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and multi-walled nanofibers (MWNFs) suspended with surfactants. Disordered fractal network of "ropes" is observed for SWNTs whereas the MWNFs show rod-like character on large length scales. Sonication can produce either better dispersion or aggregation depending on the surfactants. The fifth section focuses on rubber reinforcement by MWNFs. The nanofiber-polyurethane composites show large Payne and Mullins effects. By adding various concentrations of nanofibers, both Young's modulus and the load at high strain increased. A carbon-black filled analogue shows much less enhancement.

Book excerpt: Single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) have been extensively studied over the last decade due to their excellent comprehensive properties for a variety of applications. This study is focused on the applications of SWNTs as reinforcement for polymer matrices. Due to van der Waal interactions, SWNTs form bundles of about 30 nm diameters. In order to take full advantage of the SWNT mechanical properties, SWNT must exfoliate or at least disperse in small diameter bundle size. Optical microscopy and SEM only give qualitative information of dispersion. Quantitative characterization through TEM or AFM can be time consuming in order to get statistical result. In this study, simple method is developed to quantitatively estimate the size of SWNT bundle in dispersion based on the geometry controlled electrical percolation behavior. The SWNTs can be dispersed /exfoliated via PVP wrapped SWNT aqueous dispersion assisted by surfactants such as sodium dodycel sulfate. PVA / SWNT composite films prepared through PVP wrapped SWNTs exhibit improved mechanical properties as well as the evidence of load transfer from the polymer matrix to the SWNT as monitored by the Raman spectroscopy. SWNT can also be well dispersed into PVA/DMSO/H2O solution. Gel spinning of PVA/SWNT composite fiber has been successfully carried out with improved mechanical properties. Functionalized tubes can be used to enhance SWNT dispersion and exfoliation. Oxidation in strong acids is one method used for functionalizing nanotubes. SWNTs have been functionalized in nitric acid. The structure and properties of films (buckypaper) processed from nitric acid functionalized tubes have been studied exhibiting high tensile strength and high electrical conductivity. Nitric acid treatment results in selective degradation of the small diameter tubes.
