Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this widely ranging collection of essays, a group of contemporary psychoanalyst/authors turn their finely-honed listening skills and clinical experience to plumb the depths and illuminate themes of character, drama, myth, culture, and psychobiography in some of the world’s most beloved operas. The richly diverse chapters are unified by a psychoanalytic approach to the nuances of unconscious mental life and emotional experience as they unfold synergistically in opera’s music, words, and drama. Opera creates a unique bridge between thought and feeling, mind and body, and conscious and unconscious that offers fertile ground for psychological exploration of profound human truths. Each piece is written in a colorful and non-technical manner that will appeal to mental health professionals, musicians, academics, and general readers wishing to better understand and appreciate opera as an art form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Puzzled by John? This exciting book illuminates the Gospel in a completely fresh way. Reading and working with it will deepen fellowship and skill in pastoral care. The text is mined for gems of insight into ourselves, and as a rich resource of ample illustrative material for preachers and teachers. Poetry, prose, and hymn references abound. Pastor John elucidates the first four chapters of John's Gospel, presenting new insights into the text in a way that involves us in the story. When we read, we come nearer to Jesus, who is always with us anyway! A guide is provided for understanding ourselves, experienced by sharing with each other. Precise guidance is given for workshops, where all contribute something of themselves in the light of the text. This experience of John's Gospel is illuminated using the latest way of reading the text. What the story means is conveyed in detailed Bible study. It becomes real for us, and this reality is explored by understanding the process of reading and observing our reactions to the text. John's Christ becomes central to who we are.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two crucial moments in the formation and disintegration of musical modernity and the musical canon occurred at the turn of the seventeenth and the first half of the twentieth century. Dr Ljubica Ilic provides a fresh and close look at these moments, exploring the ways musical compositions shift to and away from ideological structures identified with modernity. The focus is on European art music whose grand narrative, defined by tonality and teleological development, begins in the seventeenth century and ends with twentieth-century modernisms. This particular musical "language game" coincides with historical changes in the phenomenological understanding of space and selfhood. A key concept of the book concerns musical compositions that remain without proper conclusions: if the wholesome (musical) work is a manifestation of wholesome subjectivity, the pieces Ilic explores deny it, reflecting conflict of the individual with previous beliefs, with contexts, and even within the self as the basic modern condition. The musical work is, in this case, still bounded and well-defined, but fractured by the incapability or refusal to satisfactorily conclude: the implicit cut forced upon it changes the expected musical flow or - speaking in spatial terms - it influences the musical form. By using the metaphor of space, Ilic explores: how the existence of a separate self as a primary feature of Western modernity becomes negotiated through awareness of the subject's own independence and individuality; innerness as something entirely separate from its surroundings; and the collective space of social interaction. Seeing musical storytelling as a metaphoric representation of selfhood, and modernity as a historical continuum, Ilic examines the boundaries and relationships between the musical work, the subject, and modern European history.
