Book excerpt: An equipment report on disk plows and disk harrows is provided as Section 8.2.5 of the US Army Corps of Engineers Wildlife Resources Management Manual. The report is designed to assist the Corps District or project biologist with the selection and use of types of equipment and materials available for habitat development and manipulation. Topics covered include description, operation and maintenance, limitations, and availability. Disk plows and disk harrows are pieces of equipment commonly used for primary seedbed preparation. They basically consist of circular cutting blades (disks) set on a common axle or multiple axles attached to a frame. Management objectives for using disk plows and disk harrows are stated, and benefits to wildlife habitat are discussed. The design and assembly of equipment are described and illustrated, and general specifications are provided. Three specialized types of disk plows-- the standard plow, wheatland (one-way) plow, and brushland plow--are described and compared. Methods of operation are described, and maintenance and safety requirements are given. Appropriate cautions and limitations are discussed.

Book excerpt: This report described the procedures used to determine potential gross erosion (PGE) in the U.S. portion of the Lake Erie drainage basin. The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was used in conjunction with the LEWMS-developed Land Resources Information System (LRIS) to determine gross erosion in the basin under existing conditions, and to evaluate the effect on gross erosion of several crop management options. These options included: reduce all soil losses to T (soil loss tollerance value), ban fall plowing, use winter cover crop, reduce tillage (chisel plow, disc, etc.), and conservation tillage (no-till on better-drained soils, chisel plow on soils with intermediate drainage). The report describes development of the USLE variables and gives samples of the output which is published as an appendix to this report. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report summaries the results of vegetation monitoring activities on dredged material placement sites on the Upper Mississippi River between Minneapolis, Minnesota and Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. The objectives for establishing vegetation were to reduce erosion, provide cover for wildlife and aesthetics. Information on each site includes site description and vegetation treatments, summary tables for percent cover, frequency, dominance, and important value information, Robel pole readings, and photographs. Also included is a list of common and scientific names of plant species. The study found that the vegetation monitoring sites were successful in obtaining the objectives. A notable conclusion from the study was that fine material increased the density of both planted and naturally occurring vegetation.

Book excerpt: This manual provides general information and insight into the development of a comprehensive water treatment residuals management plan for potable water treatment facilities. Readers gain an understanding of how to characterize the form, quantity, and quality of the residuals; determine the appropriate regulatory requirements; identify feasible disposal options; select appropriate residuals processing/treatment technologies; and develop a residuals management strategy that meets both the economic and noneconomic goals established for a water treatment facility. Addressed primarily are those residuals produced by coagulation/filtration plants, precipitative softening plants, membrane separation, ion exchange (IX), and granular activated carbon (GAC) absorption. In addition, available treatment technologies for gaseous residuals including stripping, odor control, gaseous chemical leak treatment, and ozonation are described.

Book excerpt: Pioneers traveling along the Oregon Trail from western Nebraska, through Wyoming and southern Idaho and into eastern Oregon, referred to their travel as an 800 mile journey through a sea of sagebrush, mainly big sagebrush ( Artemisia tridentata). Today approximately 50 percent of the sagebrush sea has given way to agriculture, cities and towns, and other human developments. What remains is further fragmented by range management practices, creeping expansion of woodlands, alien weed species, and the historic view that big sagebrush is a worthless plant. Two ideas are promoted in this report: (1) big sagebrush is a nursing mother to a host of organisms that range from microscopic fungi to large mammals, and (2) many range management practices applied to big sagebrush ecosystems are not science based.

This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the economic potential of various natural resources found in the Egyptian deserts that could help fill the food gap in Egypt, e.g., the date palm, olives, and domestic animals. Bearing in mind that the entire country is subject to arid or hyperarid climatic conditions, only a small portion (3% of total area) is agriculturally productive in comparison, the dominant deserts. These aspects, combined with a growing population (ca. 100 million citizens) and water resources scarcity, have produced severe adverse effects on natural resource utilization. This book presents innovative methods for addressing desert soil's key problems (soil erosion, salinity, pollution, decreased fertility, minerals, and weed and pest control). Its goal is to help authorities reclaim the desert and optimally utilize the minerals and the available natural resources to support the sustainability agenda 2030. Besides, it offers researchers guidance on remaining gaps and future research directions. Lastly and importantly, it provides essential information on investment opportunities in desert cultivation, such as the fields of food, fodder, and medicinal plants.
