Book Synopsis Disjunctive Programming by : Egon Balas
Download or read book Disjunctive Programming written by Egon Balas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disjunctive Programming is a technique and a discipline initiated by the author in the early 1970's, which has become a central tool for solving nonconvex optimization problems like pure or mixed integer programs, through convexification (cutting plane) procedures combined with enumeration. It has played a major role in the revolution in the state of the art of Integer Programming that took place roughly during the period 1990-2010. The main benefit that the reader may acquire from reading this book is a deeper understanding of the theoretical underpinnings and of the applications potential of disjunctive programming, which range from more efficient problem formulation to enhanced modeling capability and improved solution methods for integer and combinatorial optimization. Egon Balas is University Professor and Lord Professor of Operations Research at Carnegie Mellon University's Tepper School of Business.
Book Synopsis Constraint Satisfaction in Logic Programming by : Pascal Van Hentenryck
Download or read book Constraint Satisfaction in Logic Programming written by Pascal Van Hentenryck and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1989 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tackles classic problems from operations research and circuit design using a logic programming language embedding consistency techniques, a paradigm emerging from artificial intelligence research. Van Hentenryck proposes a new approach to solving discrete combinatorial problems using these techniques.Logic programming serves as a convenient language for stating combinatorial problems, but its "generate and test" paradigm leads to inefficient programs. Van Hentenryck's approach preserves one of the most useful features of logic programming - the duality of its semantics - yet allows a short development time for the programs while preserving most of the efficiency of special purpose programs written in a procedural language.Embedding consistency techniques in logic programming allows for ease and flexibility of programming and short development time because constraint propagation and tree-search programming are abstracted away from the user. It also enables logic programs to be executed efficiently as consistency techniques permit an active use of constraints to remove combinations of values that cannot appear in a solution Van Hentenryck presents a comprehensive overview of this new approach from its theoretical foundations to its design and implementation, including applications to real life combinatorial problems. The ideas introduced in "Constraint Satisfaction in Logic Programming "have been used successfully to solve more than a dozen practical problems in operations research and circuit design, including disjunctive scheduling, warehouse location, cutting stock car sequencing, and microcode labeling problems.Pascal Van Hentenryck is a member of the research staff at the European Computer Industry Research Centre. "Constraint Satisfaction in Logic Programming" is based on research for the Centre's CHIP project. As an outgrowth of this project, a new language (CHIP) that will include consistency techniques has been developed for commercial use. The book is included in the Logic Programming series edited by Ehud Shapiro.
Book Synopsis Foundations of Disjunctive Logic Programming by : Jorge Lobo
Download or read book Foundations of Disjunctive Logic Programming written by Jorge Lobo and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 1992 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides an intensive course for graduate students in computer science, as well as others interested in extensions of logic programming, on the theoretical foundations of disjunctive logic programming. Disjunctive logic programming permits the description of indefinite or incomplete information through a disjunction of atoms in the head of a clause. The authors describe model theoretic semantics, proof theoretic semantics, and fix point semantics for disjunctive and normal disjunctive programs (a normal disjunctive program permits negated atoms in the body of a clause) and present theories of negation. They conclude with selected applications to knowledge databases. Jorge Lobo is Assistant Professor in Computer Science at the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle. Jack Minker is Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Institute for Advanced Computer Studies at the University of Maryland. Arcot Rajasekar is Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Kentucky. Contents: Introduction and Background. Definitions and Terminology. Declarative Semantics. Proof Theory. Negation. Weak Negation. Normal Logic Programs. Procedural Semantics: Normal Programs. Disjunctive Databases. Applications.

This book was released on 1998-01-08 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Logic in Artificial Intelligence and Logic Programming is a multi-volume work covering all major areas of the application of logic to artificial intelligence and logic programming. The authors are chosen on an international basis and are leaders in the fields covered. Volume 5 is the last in this well-regarded series. Logic is now widely recognized as one of the foundational disciplines of computing. It has found applications in virtually all aspects of the subject, from software and hardware engineering to programming languages and artificial intelligence. In response to the growing need for an in-depth survey of these applications the Handbook of Logic in Artificial Intelligence and its companion, the Handbook of Logic in Computer Science have been created. The Handbooks are a combination of authoritative exposition, comprehensive survey, and fundamental research exploring the underlying themes in the various areas. Some mathematical background is assumed, and much of the material will be of interest to logicians and mathematicians. Volume 5 focuses particularly on logic programming. The chapters, which in many cases are of monograph length and scope, emphasize possible unifying themes.

Download or read book Constraints in Computational Logics: Theory and Applications written by Hubert Comon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-08-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constraints provide a declarative way of representing infinite sets of data. They are well suited for combining different logical or programming paradigms as has been known for constraint logic programming since the 1980s and more recently for functional programming. The use of constraints in automated deduction is more recent and has proved to be very successful, moving the control from the meta-level to the constraints, which are now first-class objects. This monograph-like book presents six thoroughly reviewed and revised lectures given by leading researchers at the summer school organized by the ESPRIT CCL Working Group in Gif-sur-Yvette, France, in September 1999. The book offers coherently written chapters on constraints and constraint solving, constraint solving on terms, combining constraint solving, constraints and theorem proving, functional and constraint logic programming, and building industrial applications.
Book Synopsis Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming by : Vijay Saraswat
Download or read book Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming written by Vijay Saraswat and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constraint programming aims at supporting a wide range of complex applications, which are often modeled naturally in terms of constraints. Early work, in the 1960s and 1970s, made use of constraints in computer graphics, user interfaces, and artificial intelligence. Such work introduced a declarative component in otherwise-procedural systems to reduce the development effort.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Robinson This set of essays pays tribute to Bob Kowalski on his 60th birthday, an anniversary which gives his friends and colleagues an excuse to celebrate his career as an original thinker, a charismatic communicator, and a forceful intellectual leader. The logic programming community hereby and herein conveys its respect and thanks to him for his pivotal role in creating and fostering the conceptual paradigm which is its raison d’Œtre. The diversity of interests covered here reflects the variety of Bob’s concerns. Read on. It is an intellectual feast. Before you begin, permit me to send him a brief personal, but public, message: Bob, how right you were, and how wrong I was. I should explain. When Bob arrived in Edinburgh in 1967 resolution was as yet fairly new, having taken several years to become at all widely known. Research groups to investigate various aspects of resolution sprang up at several institutions, the one organized by Bernard Meltzer at Edinburgh University being among the first. For the half-dozen years that Bob was a leading member of Bernard’s group, I was a frequent visitor to it, and I saw a lot of him. We had many discussions about logic, computation, and language.

Book Synopsis Answer Set Programming by : Vladimir Lifschitz
Download or read book Answer Set Programming written by Vladimir Lifschitz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Answer set programming (ASP) is a programming methodology oriented towards combinatorial search problems. In such a problem, the goal is to find a solution among a large but finite number of possibilities. The idea of ASP came from research on artificial intelligence and computational logic. ASP is a form of declarative programming: an ASP program describes what is counted as a solution to the problem, but does not specify an algorithm for solving it. Search is performed by sophisticated software systems called answer set solvers. Combinatorial search problems often arise in science and technology, and ASP has found applications in diverse areas—in historical linguistic, in bioinformatics, in robotics, in space exploration, in oil and gas industry, and many others. The importance of this programming method was recognized by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence in 2016, when AI Magazine published a special issue on answer set programming. The book introduces the reader to the theory and practice of ASP. It describes the input language of the answer set solver CLINGO, which was designed at the University of Potsdam in Germany and is used today by ASP programmers in many countries. It includes numerous examples of ASP programs and present the mathematical theory that ASP is based on. There are many exercises with complete solutions.
Book Synopsis Logic-Based 0–1 Constraint Programming by : Peter Barth
Download or read book Logic-Based 0–1 Constraint Programming written by Peter Barth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A logic view of 0-1 integer programming problems, providing new insights into the structure of problems that can lead the researcher to more effective solution techniques depending on the problem class. Operations research techniques are integrated into a logic programming environment. The first monographic treatment that begins to unify these two methodological approaches. Logic-based methods for modelling and solving combinatorial problems have recently started to play a significant role in both theory and practice. The application of logic to combinatorial problems has a dual aspect. On one hand, constraint logic programming allows one to declaratively model combinatorial problems over an appropriate constraint domain, the problems then being solved by a corresponding constraint solver. Besides being a high-level declarative interface to the constraint solver, the logic programming language allows one also to implement those subproblems that cannot be naturally expressed with constraints. On the other hand, logic-based methods can be used as a constraint solving technique within a constraint solver for combinatorial problems modelled as 0-1 integer programs.
