Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Domesticated Birds The writing of this book has been prompted by a conviction held by the authors, regarding the magnitude of the losses experienced by poultry producers as a result of preventable infectious diseases and parasitic infestations. It is believed that the importance of these losses warrants the effort expended in presenting the essential facts concerning poultry diseases to meet the needs of veterinary practitioners, veterinary students and poultrymen. The title of the book indicates a slight broadening of scope beyond the field of a work on diseases of poultry. Material included deals with the ostrich, cage birds and wild birds in semi-domestication in zoological gardens. Chapters dealing with anatomy of birds, and killing of poultry have been included. The peculiarities of diseases of birds are indicated by the emphasis laid on certain features of the subject matter. In general, skill in diagnosing diseases of birds by observing symptoms is of less importance than ability to recognize the identity of disease at autopsy. Symptoms are slightly characteristic, but autopsy material is freely available. Consequently more facts concerning details of gross lesions are given than those relating to symptoms. In many cases, particularly in the septicemias, symptoms and lesions are not distinctive, and fine distinctions of etiology must be made by a bacteriologist. On this account considerable material useful to a bacteriologist alone has been included. Available sources of information are indicated in the references appended to each chapter and by specific references to authors in the text. Special acknowledgment is made for assistance obtained from Neumann's "Parasites et Maladies Parasitaires des Oiseaux Domestiques" in the preparation of the chapters on parasites. Much material concerning the less common parasites has been drawn from this book and Neumann's zoological nomenclature has been largely followed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Etiology and Pathology of Grouse Disease, Fowl Enteritis: And Some Other Diseases Affecting Birds Having been engaged for the last five years in collecting data as to the etiology and pathology of grouse disease, I find that the time has arrived when I am enabled to give a coherent account of the Subject; the number of grouse, dead or dying naturally from the disease, which I have dissected, and which were derived from different parts of England and Scotland, sent to me during several years through the kindness of the Editor of the Field, is very considerable, as will be fully referred to later; the number of cultivations from the grouse, the number of experiments with cultivations on birds and mammals has been sufficiently large to enable me to draw definite conclusions as to the nature of those cultivations. To the Editor of the Field, and through him to many gentlemen, both in England and Scotland, interested in grouse, my best thanks are due for the valuable assistance which I received. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diseases of Poultry The domesticated birds, which we group together under the general term poultry, constitute a very important part of the farm animals of the country. Their number and value are enormous. There were in 1890 according to the census chickens or dung - hill fowls and other domesticated fowls in the United States. This gives a total of individual fowls. The number at present in the country is undoubtedly much larger than in 1890. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Poultry The examination of the throat is important in many cases because it is the seat of two common and very serious affections of domestic fowls. Namely. Roup and gapes. In examining the mouth and thoat the bill can be Opened by pressing the thumb and finger on the angle at either side; then if the windpipe is pressed up ward from the neck, the larynx can be forced into the back of the mouth and examined easily. It is tre quently of advantage to have an assistant hold the fowl while the examiner carries out these manipulations and ilso holds the tongue down bv bearing upon it with a wooden toothpick or some Similar small object. Book excerpt: - A hypothesis is a proposition, set forth as an explanation for the occurrence of a phenomenon, that can be tested. - The basis for scientific investigation is the collection of information to formulate and test hypotheses. - Experimental methods measure the effect of manipulations caused by the investigator; observational methods collect information about naturally occurring events. - There are three sub-types of experimental techniques that differ in the way subjects are chosen for inclusion in the study, in the amount of control that the investigator has over variables, and in the method used to assess changes in other variables. - Descriptive observational studies dominate the early phase of most investigations and involve the description of disease-related events in the population. Associations among factors may be observed but the strength of the associations is not measured. - Analytical observation al techniques are of three basic types: prevalence surveys, case:control studies, and incidence or cohort studies. All attempt to explain the nature of relationships among various factors and to measure the strength of associations. - Prevalence surveys and case:control studies deal with disease existing at the time of the study; incidence studies are concerned with the development of disease over time. - Observational studies may be retrospective, using existing data, or prospective with collection of new information.
