Book excerpt: The 2nd edition of this comprehensive book covers all aspects of vasculature disease, from common problems such as varicose veins through to rare congential abnormalities. Basic research, physiology and anatomy are combined with a practical clinical approach. The pathology, diagnosis and treatment of all the venous diseases that all medical practitioners see throughout their clinical life are dealt with in detail. The new edition has been extensively revised to reflect the dramatic changes which have taken place in investigative techniques, particularly ultrasonography, since the publication of the original text. These are given full consideration with extensive colour illustrations. All the major conditions such as varicose veins and ulcerations are looked at in terms of diagnosis, pathology and treatment, and there is also a chapter on the prevention of deep vein thrombosis.

Book excerpt: First, we deal with the obstruction where such exists, and in these cases haemorrhage is an unusual occurrence. Secondly, we proceed to cure the blood diseases where such exist, and here haemorrhages are common and often severe; when these blood diseases are cured the haemorrhages cease, and then the vein medicines proper and the anti-traumatics come into play. The Second Part contains indications for about 50 homoeopathic remedies likely to be useful in varicose conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Varicose veins are a very common problem. The precise aetiology of primary varicose veins remains unclear. It seems likely from the available evidence that inherited structural weakness combined with haemodynamic or microcirculatory abnormalities eventually lead to reduced vein wall elasticity, dilatation and the formation of varicosities. Increasing age, female gender, parity and occupation may all promote the development of varicose veins in susceptible individuals. Further clinical and experimental studies are necessary if the relative contribution of each of these factors is to be fully elucidated. References 1. Editorial. The treatment of varicose veins. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last five years a number of new books on venous disorders have been produced. Previously the study of venous disease was well-served by the classic texts of Foote, Anning, Dodd and Cockett, and Hobbs, but these texts are now out of print and out of date. How does Larry Tretbar's book equate with its competition? Those of you who pick up or purchase this delightful little book will not be disappointed. It is a single author text which is clearly written and succinct. In just over 100 pages Tretbar distils the work of many of his larger competitors without losing any vital information along the way. He also provides new insights and ideas in many areas. Contents are set out in a standard format but the writing is pithy and the line drawings (mostly by the author himself) are clear and helpful. It excels in the management and treatment of varicose veins where the author has made his major contribution. The book contains many of the classic venous references though these of necessity cannot be comprehensive in the interest of brevity. Linton pointed out that diseases of the veins of the lower extremities are one of the commonest of human ailments that can be remedied by surgical measures. These disorders are often poorly managed by junior doctors who fail to acquaint themselves with the anatomy and pathophysiology of these disorders.

Chronic venous disease is a long-term condition and occurs because a vein is partly blocked, or blood is leaking around the valves of the veins (MedlinePlus). Venous disorders are very common and whilst not usually life threatening, can cause pain and disability. This practical guide provides an understanding of the pathophysiology of venous diseases and their management. Beginning with an introduction to anatomy and physiology, the following chapters exam clinical manifestations, staging, and management options including laser therapy, surgery and sclerotherapy (injection of a substance directly into the vein). The final sections discuss more complex disorders such as deep vein thrombosis, chronic venous ulcer and morbid varicose vein. The final chapter provides a photographic presentation of venous diseases to enhance understanding of the text. Key points Practical guide providing understanding of pathophysiology of venous diseases and their management Covers common disorders (varicose veins) and more complex diseases (deep vein thrombosis) Examines various treatment options including laser therapy and surgery Includes photographic presentation of venous diseases
