Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diseases of the Genital Organs of Domestic Animals The re-casting Of the genital diseases of animals into a systematic treatise is a formidable task, the first effort at which must be very imperfect. In 1909 I published vet erinary obstetrics; including the diseases OF breed ing animals and OF the new born in which many of the diseases of the genital organs were included under the primitive plan. It was abandoned at the exhaustion Of the first edition. In 1917 I published veterinary obstet rics and began the preparation of the present volume. The two treatises have been designated companion volumes because they are closely allied in subject matter and may be profitably studied together. The present treatise appears at a critical period in the history of the diseases of the genital organs of animals, when an Old, firmly entrenched belief is Slowly crumbling and a modern one is struggling for recognition. Abortion has long been regarded as a Specific infectious disease, due in a given species of animals to one bacterium and to one only. If an exception arose and a given abortion or group of abortions was apparently due to an infection other than that specified for the species of animal concerned, it was not infectious abortion but merely abortion due to infection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Clinical Diagnostics of the Internal Diseases of Domestic Animals In the translation of Malkmus "Grundriss der Klinischen Diagnostik" we have endeavored simply to reproduce the author's ideas with the hope that the English and American Veterinary Students may thus be provided with a text-book for which they have long felt a need. The needs of the students in the College of Veterinary Medicine of the Ohio State University have been the direct cause of the hurried undertaking of this work. A few short notes which we thought proper to add here and there, throughout the book, have been placed in []. Columbus, O., David S. White, January, 1908. Paul Fischer. Preface to the Third Edition. The favorable reception which this work has met is emphasized by the fact that it has been translated into both the English and French languages. I am convinced that the concise manner in which I have presented the subject of clinical diagnostics has received friendly recognition from practitioners. In re-writing the third edition I have endeavored to include everything which would contribute toward making it more complete and better. To this end all recent clinical observations and new methods of examination have been employed. The number of illustrations has been increased; and a table in color of the quantitative determination of indican has been added. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing the very successful first edition, this book reviews the most recent changes to the legal situation in Europe concerning genetically engineered food and labeling. Due to the extremely rapid developments in green biotechnology, all the chapters have been substantially revised and updated. Divided into three distinct parts, the text begins by covering applications and perspectives, including transgenic modification of production traits in farm animals, fermented food production and the production of food additives using filamentous fungi. The second section is devoted to legislation, while the final part examines methods of detection, such as DNA-based methods, and methods for detecting genetic engineering in composed and processed foods. From the reviews of the first edition: "This work promises to be a standard reference in the detection of genetically engineered food. I believe this work will find a valued place for any scientist, regulator or technical library that deals with biotechnology or detection of genetically engineered food organisms." —James J. Heinis, Journal of Agricultural & Food Information
