Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Religion and Theology the Church: In Idea and in History There is also embodied in the volume Studies in the New Testament idea of the church, preceded by one on its main function or worship. This is followed by others on its founders and its making. These are succeeded by others on the teaching of Jesus as the standard of the church's living. In the second of these is embodied a discussion of what Jesus intended His church to be; and in a third an account of His passion as its foundation. There follow six chapters, three of which are occupied with Paul and three with John, the apostles being taken as specimens of the material Jesus used in building up His church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel History and Its Transmission The ten Lectures contained in this volume were delivered in the spring of this year at the Passmore Edwards Settlement in London as the Jowett Lectures for 1906. I repeated them with very little change for my inaugural course at Cambridge as Norrisian Professor of Divinity, so that it seemed advisable to keep them in lecture form when they came to be printed. It is sometimes supposed that the result of modern historical criticism is to diminish the historical value of the Gospels. My own researches have made me believe that there is a much larger element of genuine history in the Canonical Gospels, than a general view of the tendencies which influenced Christendom during the first century and a half of its existence might have led one to anticipate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Salvation The aim of the present work is to present a biblical, historical, and constructive discussion of the Christian doctrine of salvation. The theme has been regarded and treated primarily as a subject of investigation. I have accordingly approached it from the historical side, and have aimed to state the problems to be considered and to define my positions respecting them in an historical and inductive method. I have tried to judge the various Opinions reviewed and to test my own by means of the fundamental Christian concepts of God and of man. The treatment has been made as objective as possible. It has been my aim to describe and estimate conflicting theories with fairness. My own judgments, with the reasons for them, have been frankly given. It is not to be expected, of course, that they will commend them selves to the acceptance of all readers, but I trust that those who may dissent from them may still find some thing in the book by which they may be interested or instructed. The present discussion presupposes a general know ledge Of Biblical Theology and of the History Of Christian Doctrine, such as is furnished by the relevant sections Of my Theology of the New Testament and Professor Fisher's History of Christian Doctrine, earlier volumes of the International Theological Library. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Christian Doctrine Several years have elapsed since I engaged to prepare this work. The unexpected delay in its publication is owing chiefly to the pressure of other and more imperative engagements. One reason for it, however, is the fact that, although the subject is one which I had long studied and on which I had given instruction to many successive classes, more time was required for the compo sition of the book than I had anticipated. This is partly for the reason that it appeared to me, for the present purpose, expedient to abandon for the most part the method which I had always fol lowed in my Lectures of arranging the matter under the heads of General and Special Doctrinal History. On this topic something more is said in the introductory chapter. This change Of plan has involved an entire recasting of the materials to be incorpo rated into this volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Old Testament, Critical, Historical, and Theological, Vol. 1: Containing a Discussion of the Most Important Questions Belonging to the Several Books The following work is offered to the public with the view of supplying a want in English theological literature. Since the year 1856 the idea has gradually strengthened in the author's mind that there is room for an Introduction to the Old Testament, in which processes should be given as well as results. The space allotted to him in a volume published in that year was too limited to satisfy the necessary requirements. He did for the Old Testament then what appeared right and proper. But he felt that he had not done full justice either to the subject or himself. Longer time, deeper reflection, and repeated investigation were demanded, because difficult themes cannot be satisfactorily settled without protracted study. Accordingly since 1857 his mind has been occupied with the chief questions relating to the books of the Old Testament; with the view of arriving at such results respecting them as the evidence seems to justify. The process has been slow and gradual, because he has often striven against new views and tried to uphold traditional sentiments as long as he could. He has thought it a duty to maintain conservative opinions whenever he could honestly do so. In cases where they could not stand the test of true criticism they had to be abandoned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Study of Theology, Vol. 1 The history of the study of Theology is Theological Encyclopaedia placed in its historical frame and order. It traces the study of Theology from the beginning until the present time. There is a study of Theology in all the higher religions. This book does not propose to go beyond the Christian religion. It is the history of the study of Christian Theology. It begins, therefore, with the study of Theology by Jesus Christ and His apostles. Christian Theology may be studied with regard either to its contents or to its forms. The study of the contents of Christian Theology in their historic mould belongs to the department of Church History, as the history of the Christian Religion, of Christian Doctrine, of Christian Institutions, and so on. Theological Encyclopaedia has to do only with the forms of Christian Theology, its methods, the organisation of the various departments of which it is composed, and its literature. The history of the study of Christian Theology is a history of its methods, its disciplines, and its literature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can theology think and talk about history? Building on the work of the major twentieth-century theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar as well as entering into sharp critical debate with him, this book sets out to examine the value and the potential of a 'theodramatic' conception of history. By engaging in dialogue not only with theologians and philosophers like von Balthasar, Hegel and Barth, but with poets and dramatists such as the Greek tragedians, Shakespeare and Gerard Manley Hopkins, the book makes its theological principles open and indebted to literary forms, and seeks to show how such a theology might be applied to a world intrinsically and thoroughly historical. By contrast with theologies that stand back from the contingencies of history and so fight shy of the uncertainties and openness of Christian existence, this book's theology is committed to taking seriously the God who works in time.

But, while this is so, I find that Essay II. - where there has had to be produced a sort of rapid sketch of Biblical Theology, from the point of view of eschato logical doctrine - contains much discussion of the outside, or apologetic and critical aspects, of questions, with the heart of which one has been dealing in Essay I. If Essay I. Seems to be too slight in its treatment of certain questions regarding the Gospels, may I hope that Essay II. Will supply its deficiencies? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical Theology presents the key pillars of the contemporary church and the development of those doctrines as they evolved from the history of Christian thought. Most historical theology texts follow Christian beliefs in a strict chronological manner with the classic theological loci scattered throughout various time periods, movements, and controversies—making for good history but confusing theology. This companion to the classic bestseller Systematic Theology is unique among historical theologies. Gregg Allison sets out the history of Christian doctrine according to a topical-chronological arrangement—one theological element at a time instead of committing to a discussion of theological thought according to its historical appearance alone. This method allows you to: Contemplate one tenet of Christianity at a time, along with its formulation in the early church—through the Middle Ages, Reformation, and post-Reformation era, and into the modern period. Become familiar with the primary source material of Christian history's most important contributors, such as Cyprian, Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Barth, and others. Understand the development of evangelical doctrine with a focus on the centrality of the gospel. Discern a sense of urgent need for greater doctrinal understanding in the whole church. Historical Theology is an easy-to-read textbook for any Christian who wants to know how the church has come to believe what it believes today. Gregg Allison's clear and concise structure make this resource an ideal introduction to Christian doctrine.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Theology: Lectures Delivered in Chicago Theological Seminary The lectures which compose this volume were delivered in April 1894 to the Chicago Theological Seminary, and are published at the request of the Faculty of that Institution. They do not amount to a system of theology, but the writer believes they are consistent with each other, and would find their place in a system. They are printed as they were delivered, with one exception. The ninth lecture, which excited considerable discussion in the circles to which it was first addressed, has been re-written not with the view of retracting or qualifying anything, but in order, as far as possible, to obviate misconception, and secure a readier acceptance for what the writer thinks true ideas on the authority of Scripture. The notes have been added, partly to justify the statements made in the lectures as to the Opinions of various theologians and schools, partly to acknowledge the writer's obligations to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of New Testament Theology This Outline of New Testament Theology was originally prepared for the use of classes in the Hamilton Theological Seminary, and has been repeatedly used in the course of classroom work. It is now offered with diffidence to a wider circle, in the hope that it so summarizes the teachings of the New Testament as to be of some service to students of the Word of God. It will at once be noted that it claims to be only an outline. Consequently conclusions are often given without a statement of the reasons which have led to their acceptance, and all exegetical discussions have been rigidly excluded. This has been required by the condensation indispensable for classroom work, and no less by the author's conception of the scope of the science.
