Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of World War II, the United States had become well integrated into the world markets for forest products. No longer can domestic prices of forest products be viewed as being wholly determined by domestic demand and supply, nor even by North American supply and demand, but must be viewed in a worldwide context. Originally published in 1980, this work provides a comprehensive overview of the nature of global forestry, particularly as it pertains to international trade flows of forest products, and analyses the role of the United States in a global context. This is a valuable resource for any student or researcher interested in environmental studies, global trade relations, and foreign market development.

Book excerpt: Illegal timber trade is tied to forest loss and degradation, and contributes to negativeimpacts on social, economic, ecological, and climate systems. Despite growing international awareness and policies designed to prevent illegal timber from entering markets, the problem is persistent and difficult to detect. This study expands on previous efforts to identify signs of illegality in national trade discrepancies through analysis of imbalances between import and export data reported by Indonesia and its largest national timber trade partners. The goals of this research are to 1) Measure the effectiveness of national policies incurbing trade of illegal timber products from Indonesia, 2) Identify Indonesia's national timber trade partners and products that exhibit a high risk of illegality, and 3) Evaluate the efficacy and appropriateness of discrepancy analysis as a means to estimate and pinpoint illegal timber trade. We analyzed trade data for logs, lumber and plywood, as well as relevant policies in Indonesia and eleven of its most important timber trade partners from the years 2000 - 2019. Through data visualization and statistical analysis, we identify that Indonesian lumber exports are at the highest risk of illegality; that China is Indonesia's highest-risk trade partner; that specific national policies do contribute to discrepancy reduction between specific nations; and that single-nation trade import policies may drive leakage of illegal timber from regulated to less regulated markets. Further work to more precisely quantify the extent and sources of "normality" indiscrepancies would enable a clearer parsing of illegal or risky discrepancies. Understanding this data to be non-normally distributed, future application of nonparametric statistical testing would be a valuable contribution. Additional research on the presence and magnitude of leakage resulting from specific policies will be vital to ongoing efforts to reduce tropical forest loss resulting from illegal trade.
Book Synopsis LAO P.D.R.: Assessing the Quality of Trade Statistics by : Mr.Geoffrey J Bannister
Download or read book LAO P.D.R.: Assessing the Quality of Trade Statistics written by Mr.Geoffrey J Bannister and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper assesses external trade statistics in Lao PDR by looking at mirror statistics, and with reference to international experience in compilation and dissemination of external trade data. We find that exports could be underreported by 8 to 50 percent, while imports could be underreported by 30 to 70 percent, and the trade deficit could be 20 percent to 280 percent higher. Underreporting is concentrated in trade with major partners, including Thailand (17 percent of total trade), China (10 percent of total trade) and Vietnam (3 percent of total trade). On the export side, underreporting is concentrated in wood and wood products, while for imports it is concentrated in a much wider variety of products, including food, fuel, vehicles, machinery, chemical products, plastics and rubber, and construction materials. Possible sources and implications of these discrepancies are discussed.
Book Synopsis Forest Products Statistical Information Systems of EU and EFTA by : Philip Wardle
Download or read book Forest Products Statistical Information Systems of EU and EFTA written by Philip Wardle and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the only in its kind to review the commodity coding, definitions and methodology applying to the collection of forest products production and trade statistics. The analysis – both qualitative as quantitative - contains valuable information for anybody who want to gain more insight in the methodology behind the figures. Recommendations are made for improving the data collection framework. Special attention has been given to the comparability of commodity coding systems, comparability of terms and definitions at the national and international levels, conversion factors to convert volume and weight, double counting and the coverage of production and trade of tropical timber and its products. This relates to the efforts of the ECE, FAO, EUROSTAT and ITTO who jointly collect such statistics from their member states, with the aim to streamlining the collection process and to reducing the burden for their statistical correspondents. Data on commercial trade of all commodities, among which forest products, is also collected by UN – COMTRADE and Eurostat – COMEXT. The possible use of their data for reporting to the joint questionnaire is used.
