Taking a gentle approach and a guided journey through the different product types, we discover that they are not as superficial as often thought and learn that there is some amazing science behind them. We shall uncover some of the truths behind the myths and point out some interesting facts on our way. Did you know? Vitamin E is the world’s most used cosmetic active ingredient. At just 1mm thick, your amazing skin keeps out just about everything it’s exposed to – including your products! A ‘chemical soup’ of amino acids, urea, mineral salts and organic acids act as ‘water magnets’ in the skin keeping it naturally moisturised. Discovered centuries ago, iron oxides (yes, the same chemicals as rust) are still commonly used inorganic pigments in foundations. A lipstick is a fine balance of waxes, oils and colourants to keep the stick stable and leave an even gloss on your lips.

Book excerpt: These are the conference proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Discovery Science (DS 2001). Although discovery is naturally ubiquitous in s- ence, and scientific discovery itself has been subject to scientific investigation for centuries, the term Discovery Science is comparably new. It came up in conn- tion with the Japanese Discovery Science project (cf. Arikawa's invited lecture on The Discovery Science Project in Japan in the present volume) some time during the last few years. Setsuo Arikawa is the father in spirit of the Discovery Science conference series. He led the above mentioned project, and he is currently serving as the chairman of the international steering committee for the Discovery Science c- ference series. The other members of this board are currently (in alphabetical order) Klaus P. Jantke, Masahiko Sato, Ayumi Shinohara, Carl H. Smith, and Thomas Zeugmann. Colleagues and friends from all over the world took the opportunity of me- ing for this conference to celebrate Arikawa's 60th birthday and to pay tribute to his manifold contributions to science, in general, and to Learning Theory and Discovery Science, in particular. Algorithmic Learning Theory (ALT, for short) is another conference series initiated by Setsuo Arikawa in Japan in 1990. In 1994, it amalgamated with the conference series on Analogical and Inductive Inference (AII), when ALT was held outside of Japan for the first time.

Book excerpt: This volume contains 3 invited papers, 15 regular papers, and 22 poster papers that were selected for presentation at the Third International Conference on Discovery Science (DS 2000), which was held 4-6 December 2000 in Kyoto. The Program Committee selected the contributed papers from 48 submissions. Three distinguished researchers accepted our invitation to present talks: J- frey D. Ullman (Stanford University), Joseph Y. Halpern (Cornell University), and Masami Hagiya (University of Tokyo). The Program Committee would like to thank all those who submitted papers for consideration and the invited speakers. I would like to thank the Program Committee members, the Local Arrangements Committee members, and the Steering Committee members for their splendid and hard work. Finally, special thanks go to the PC Assistant Shoko Suzuki for her assistance in the development of web pages and the preparation of these proceedings. September 2000 Shinichi Morishita Organization Discovery Science 2000 is organized as part of the activities of the Discovery Science Project sponsored by Grant-in-Aid for Scienti?c Research in the Priority Area from the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture (MESSC) of Japan, in cooperation with the Japanese Society for Arti?cial Intelligence, and with SIG of Data Mining, Japan Society for Software Science and Technology.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the 5th International Conference on Discovery Science (DS 2002) held at the Mövenpick Hotel, Lub ̈eck, G- many, November 24-26, 2002. The conference was supported by CorpoBase, DFKI GmbH, and JessenLenz. The conference was collocated with the 13th International Conference on - gorithmic Learning Theory (ALT 2002). Both conferences were held in parallel and shared?ve invited talks as well as all social events. The combination of ALT 2002 and DS 2002 allowed for a comprehensive treatment of recent de- lopments in computational learning theory and machine learning - some of the cornerstones of discovery science. In response to the call for papers 76 submissions were received. The program committee selected 17 submissions as regular papers and 29 submissions as poster presentations of which 27 have been submitted for publication. This selection was based on clarity, signi?cance, and originality, as well as on relevance to the rapidly evolving?eld of discovery science.
