It tries to understand how and why this simple fact has been transformed into a militant social movement. A clue is found in Hanna Arendt analyses of ideologies (based on the nazi and soviet totalitarianisms). All the key features of an ideology are present in “warmism”: a monocausal explanation of everything and anything; a reference/reverence to “science”; a massive intervention of the State; a total war on a terrible evil, CO2, designated as enemy n°1 (although terrorism is now becoming a serious competitor), and on all lukewarmers; and finally, a popular success. The book argues that the equation IPCC = Science is highly questionable, and that the consequences drawn and the projections/predictions made (for year 2,100) are even more fragile. It shows that the dominant warmist catechism recited by politicians and media goes much beyond this questionable scientific basis. The medicines proposed and imposed under the pretext of “saving the planet” are discussed, and shown to be generally unrealistic and regressive. In particular, contrary to what is claimed by our modern prophets, they would prevent countries of Africa and South-East Asia, which are, at last, beginning to get themselves out of misery, to stop doing so. In short, warmism is the ideology of the day, and it is dangerous like all ideologies.

Book excerpt: From 1789 onwards there sprang up a fervent revolutionary cult of Rousseau, and at each stage in the subsequent unfolding of the drama of the Revolution historians have seen Rousseau's influence at work. Mrs McDonald seeks in this study to trace the development of the cult and to define the nature of the influence by means of a detailed survey of the appeals made to the authority of Rousseau in books, pamphlets and accounts of speeches put forth by revolutionary and counter-revolutionary writers between 1762 and 1791, and she reaches conclusions more complex than those which have been commonly accepted. She is able to show that most of the writers on the revolutionary side who invoked Rousseau's name did so in order to put forward their own views and used arguments that were often in direct contradiction with those which he had formulated; the Social Contract was not widely read in these years, and those revolutionaries who did actually study it were often critical of what they found there. By contrast, the most careful analysis of Rousseau's political theory is to be found in the pamphlets written by aristocratic critics of the Revolution in protest against the misuse to which his name had been put.

Were they simply heirs to a long line of nationalists seeking more rights for francophones, as older histories suggest, or were they leftists whose demands echoed the ideas of student movements in Quebec, English Canada, the United States, and France? Belliveau argues that the student movement emerged in the late 1950s as an expression of the province’s changing youth culture but then evolved as students drew inspiration from the ideas of the New Left, shifting allegiance from liberalism to radical communitarianism and ultimately fuelling the fires of a new brand of Acadian nationalism in the 1970s.

Bates shows that error was a complex, important, and by no means entirely negative concept in Enlightenment thought, one that had a decisive influence in revolutionary debates on political identity and national history. What can it mean to write a history of error? In Bates's view all philosophy, insofar as its project is the search for truth, begins in error. If truth is posited as a goal to be attained, not as a given of some kind, then error assumes a central role in the quest for truth. Going beyond both liberal celebrations and postmodern critiques of Enlightenment reason, Bates reveals just how crucial the problematic relation between human "wandering" and the mystery of truth was in eighteenth-century thought. The author draws on a wide range of Enlightenment thinkers, including Etienne Bonnot de Condillac, Jean d'Alembert, Marie-Jean-Antoine-Nicolas Caritat, Marquis de Condorcet, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Charles Bonnet, showing how they wrestled with the "risk and promise" of error.
