Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Discourse on Metaphysics is one of Leibniz ́s fundamental works. Written around January 1686, it is the most accomplished systematic expression of Leibniz's philosophy in the 1680s, the period in which Leibniz's philosophy reached maturity. Leibniz's goal in the Discourse is to give a metaphysics for Christianity; that is, to provide the answers that he believes Christians should give to the basic metaphysical questions. Why does the world exist? What is the world like? What kinds of things exist? And what is the place of human beings in the world? To this purpose Leibniz discusses some of the most traditional topics of metaphysics, such as the nature of God, the purpose of God in creating the world, the nature of substance, the possibility of miracles, the nature of our knowledge, free will, and the justice behind salvation and damnation. This volume provides a new translation of the Discourse, complete with a critical introduction and a comprehensive philosophical commentary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legendary since his own time as a universal genius, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) contributed significantly to almost every branch of learning, from mathematics to ecumenical theology. But the part of his work that is most studied today is probably his writings in metaphysics, which have been the focus of particularly lively philosophical discussion in the last twenty years or so. Leibniz's writings in metaphysics contain one of the great classic systems of modern philosophy, but the system must be pieced together from a vast and miscellaneous array of manuscripts, letters, articles, and books, in a way that makes especially strenuous demands on scholarship. This book presents an in-depth interpretation of three important parts of Leibniz's metaphysics, thoroughly grounded in the texts as well as in philosophical analysis and critique. The three areas discussed are the metaphysical part of Leibniz's philosophy of logic, his essentially theological treatment of the central issues of ontology, and his theory of substance (the theory of monads).

Book Synopsis Principles of Deleuzian Philosophy by : Kokubun Koichiro Kokubun
Download or read book Principles of Deleuzian Philosophy written by Kokubun Koichiro Kokubun and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What gives us the right to speak of a Deleuzian philosophy, a philosophy at first sight concerned solely with interpreting other philosophers and writers? Koichiro Kokubun focuses on Deleuze's method of 'free indirect discourse' to locate and explicate Deleuze's philosophy of transcendental empiricism and its constitutive limits. Working through Deleuze's confrontations with Hume, Kant, Bergson, Freud, Lacan, Foucault and Guattari, Kokubun uncovers a philosophy strongly influenced by structuralism and psychoanalysis, which had to overtake these movements because of its practical ambitions. Kokubun concludes with a radical revitalisation of the political potential of this philosophy.
Book Synopsis Post-Analytic Tractatus by : Barry Stocker
Download or read book Post-Analytic Tractatus written by Barry Stocker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-Analytic Tractatus establishes Wittgenstein's early work in the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus as an invaluable source for exploring current debate on analytic philosophy in its origins, history, limits and relations with European philosophy. Drawing together new work from the leading figures in interpretation of the Tractatus - Conant and Diamond - with work by respected Wittgenstein commentators such as Kremer and Hutto, together with a reprint of a relevant and striking text by Brouwer, this timely collection offers a valuable resource for exploring the Tractatus' connections to approaches other than logical positivism, mathematical logic and formal semantics. Examining links with the work of Leibniz, Kant, Kierkegaard, Schopenhauer, Frege, Russell, James, Heidegger and others, the contributors consider key themes in twentieth-century philosophy including symbols and expression, language and metaphysics, objects and signs, logical form, structure and syntax, limits of philosophical discourse, Idealism and transcendental arguments, distinguishing sense and nonsense, showing and saying in communication, mysticism and transcendence in experience, ethical and aesthetic value, the worlds of solipsism and religion, philosophy as an activity and as a system. Particularly timely in establishing the Tractatus as a source for comparable debates across Continental and Analytic philosophy, this collection will prove of value to scholars of twentieth-century philosophy, Wittgenstein, and Post-Analytic philosophy.
Book Synopsis The Actual and the Possible by : Mark Sinclair
Download or read book The Actual and the Possible written by Mark Sinclair and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Actual and the Possible presents new essays by leading specialists on modality and the metaphysics of modality in the history of modern philosophy from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries. It revisits key moments in the history of modern modal doctrines, and illuminates lesser-known moments of that history. The ultimate purpose of this historical approach is to contextualise and even to offer some alternatives to dominant positions within the contemporary philosophy of modality. Hence the volume contains not only new scholarship on the early-modern doctrines of Baruch Spinoza, G. W. F. Leibniz, Christian Wolff and Immanuel Kant, but also work relating to less familiar nineteenth-century thinkers such as Alexius Meinong and Jan Lukasiewicz, together with essays on celebrated nineteenth- and twentieth-century thinkers such as G. W. F. Hegel, Martin Heidegger and Bertrand Russell, whose modal doctrines have not previously garnered the attention they deserve. The volume thus covers a variety of traditions, and its historical range extends to the end of the twentieth century, addressing the legacy of W. V. Quine's critique of modality within recent analytic philosophy.

Book Synopsis The Expansion of Metaphysics by : Miklos Veto
Download or read book The Expansion of Metaphysics written by Miklos Veto and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culmination of a lifetime's preoccupation with crucial human concerns too often curiously marginalized by the history of philosophy, The Expansion of Metaphysics sheds new light on freedom and the will by making the phenomenon of novelty philosophically intelligible. The a priori synthesis of Kant is joined to Judeo-Christian themes (the kenosis of Christ in the incarnation and the tzimtzum of God in the creation) in order to develop a doctrine of "superabundance" (freedom and love) and "singularity" (with the Work of Art and the Child as paradigms). Space and time are reanalyzed as structural forms of human existence as Vető guides the reader into the depths and heights of reality, climaxing in a metaphysics of good and evil.

Book Synopsis Natural Law and Laws of Nature in Early Modern Europe by : Michael Stolleis
Download or read book Natural Law and Laws of Nature in Early Modern Europe written by Michael Stolleis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This impressive volume is the first attempt to look at the intertwined histories of natural law and the laws of nature in early modern Europe. These notions became central to jurisprudence and natural philosophy in the seventeenth century; the debates that informed developments in those fields drew heavily on theology and moral philosophy, and vice versa. Historians of science, law, philosophy, and theology from Europe and North America here come together to address these central themes and to consider the question; was the emergence of natural law both in European jurisprudence and natural philosophy merely a coincidence, or did these disciplinary traditions develop within a common conceptual matrix, in which theological, philosophical, and political arguments converged to make the analogy between legal and natural orders compelling. This book will stimulate new debate in the areas of intellectual history and the history of philosophy, as well as the natural and human sciences in general.
Book Synopsis Leibniz et les puissances du langage by : Dominique Berlioz
Download or read book Leibniz et les puissances du langage written by Dominique Berlioz and published by Vrin. This book was released on 2005 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
