Book Synopsis The Future of Disability in America by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book The Future of Disability in America written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-10-24 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The future of disability in America will depend on how well the U.S. prepares for and manages the demographic, fiscal, and technological developments that will unfold during the next two to three decades. Building upon two prior studies from the Institute of Medicine (the 1991 Institute of Medicine's report Disability in America and the 1997 report Enabling America), The Future of Disability in America examines both progress and concerns about continuing barriers that limit the independence, productivity, and participation in community life of people with disabilities. This book offers a comprehensive look at a wide range of issues, including the prevalence of disability across the lifespan; disability trends the role of assistive technology; barriers posed by health care and other facilities with inaccessible buildings, equipment, and information formats; the needs of young people moving from pediatric to adult health care and of adults experiencing premature aging and secondary health problems; selected issues in health care financing (e.g., risk adjusting payments to health plans, coverage of assistive technology); and the organizing and financing of disability-related research. The Future of Disability in America is an assessment of both principles and scientific evidence for disability policies and services. This book's recommendations propose steps to eliminate barriers and strengthen the evidence base for future public and private actions to reduce the impact of disability on individuals, families, and society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This informative book takes the practitioner through the requirements for Part M of the Building Regulations, explaining and expanding the guidance given in the Approved Document, and comparing the advice in BS83000 and other relevant publications. Access statements are demystified, and the implications for the building in use under the Disability Discrimination Act are clarified. It will inform all those working within the built environment, enabling them to deal with a complex and evolving area of the law which directly affects everyone. As with the other books in the Using the Building Regulations series Part M Access goes far beyond analysis of the Regulations and Documents themselves, and offers practical advice on using not just the traditional routes to compliance but also on the alternative approaches suggested but not explained in the Approved Documents. The advantages and disadvantages of each form of compliance are analysed in depth.

Book Synopsis Provision and Use of Transport Vehicles by : Disability Rights Commission
Download or read book Provision and Use of Transport Vehicles written by Disability Rights Commission and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a supplement to the code of practice to Part 3 of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, known as the Part 3 Code, which published as: "Rights of access to goods, facilities, services and premises" (2002, print version ISBN 0117028606). Although services associated with transport infrastructure have always been covered by Part 3 of the Act, access to transport services was exempted. Changes introduced by the Disability Discrimination Act 2005 allowed this exemption to be lifted, and this has been done by the Disability Discrimination (Transport Vehicles) Regulations 2005 (SI 2005/3190, ISBN 0110736311) which come into force on 4 December 2006. This supplementary Code sets out to explain the changes in the law. Chapters cover: the scope of the Code; what the Act says about providing services, and how this affects transport providers; the provider's duty not to treat a disabled person less favourably; making changes for disabled people ("reasonable adjustments"); reasonable adjustments in practice; can a transport provider justify less favourable treatment or make reasonable adjustments?

Book Synopsis The Blue Badge Scheme by : Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Transport Committee
Download or read book The Blue Badge Scheme written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Transport Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disabled people may be missing out on special parking concessions because of where they live. This is the main finding of this report into the Blue Badge Scheme, which offers parking concessions for disabled people. It comes as the Government carries out a strategic review of the scheme. The Committee found wide differences in the way the eligibility criteria are assessed by different local authorities. It wants to see more done to promote consistent good practice across the country. The Committee's conclusions include: (1) the Committee wants to see the minimum issue period for a badge reduced from three years to one, to include those with short-term or temporary disabilities. It would also like to see "smart card" technology developed so there could be even more flexibility over the issuing of badges. (2) In cases where a blue badge holder's condition is unlikely to improve they should not usually have to undergo regular three-yearly assessments, but have their badge renewed automatically. (3) the Government should consider including central London, which currently has its own regime, in the national system. (4) eligibility for a blue badge should be based on mobility in a wider sense than simply on an applicant's ability to walk. But the Government should also look to more appropriate ways of helping people with other disabilities, such as bowel disease. (5) for those who knowingly abuse the scheme the Committee want to see tougher penalties. In particular, those who use stolen badges should have their vehicles impounded. A national database should also be established to help combat fraud. (6) the Security Industry Authority should take steps to prevent vehicles displaying a valid badge from being clamped when they are parked on private land. (7) the Committee also found that Asda was the only example given of a major national company which consistently fined people who abused its disabled bays.
