Book excerpt: Returning to Bukhara after a prolonged exile, Hodja Nasreddin finds his family gone, his home destroyed, and his city in the grasp of corrupt and greedy rulers who have brought pain and suffering upon the common folk. But Hodja Nasreddin is not one to bow to oppression or abandon the downtrodden. Though he is armed only with his quick wits and his donkey, all the swords, walls, and dungeons in the land cannot stop him! Leaning on his own experiences and travels during the first half of the 20th century, Leonid Solovyov weaves the many stories and anecdotes about Hodja Nasreddin - a legendary folk character in the Middle East and Central Asia - into a masterful tale brimming with passionate love for life, liberty, and happiness.

Book excerpt: What makes someone Jewish? Theodore Ross was nine years old when he moved with his mother from New York City to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Once there, his mother decided, for both personal and spiritual reasons, to have her family pretend not to be Jewish. He went to an Episcopal school, where he studied the New Testament, sang in the choir, and even took Communion. Later, as an adult, he wondered: Am I still Jewish? Seeking an answer, Ross traveled around the country and to Israel, visiting a wide variety of Jewish communities. From “Crypto-Jews” in New Mexico and secluded ultra-devout Orthodox towns in upstate New York to a rare Classical Reform congregation in Kansas City, Ross tries to understand himself by experiencing the diversity of Judaism. Quirky and self-aware, introspective and impassioned, Am I a Jew? is a story about the universal struggle to define a relationship (or lack thereof) with religion.

Book excerpt: The Leopard's Spots: A Romance of the White Man's Burden, Volume I of the "Reconstruction Trilogy," is the first part of a three part historical novel meant to portray life in the immediate period following the end of the US Civil War in the South. Written by a Southern sympathizer, political activist and Baptist preacher, the Reconstruction trilogy tells the story of Charles Gaston, the son of a famous Confederate colonel, who leads his men from the state of North Carolina in a rebellion against the Reconstruction policy which was implemented in the South after the war. Other characters featured include Simon Legree, an ex-slave driver turned Reconstruction leader, emancipated slaves, former soldiers from both sides, and unscrupulous politicians, all set against a love story based around the main character. The personalities in the book are fictional, but are all based on real people, giving the work a uniquely realistic air, which made it a best seller in its time. The entire first edition was sold before it was printed, and the book sold over 100,000 copies in its first 6 months. The other two volumes in this trilogy, "The Clansman" and "The Traitor," were as successful as "The Leopard's Spots," with "The Clansman" becoming the basis for the famous 1915 epic silent movie "Birth of a Nation."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Middle school expert Max Corrigan is back in the second book of this hilarious middle-grade series, and he wants YOU to run for class president. This book by comic artist Neil Swaab, which follows the hit first book, The Secrets to Ruling School, is a perfect read in advance of the 2016 elections and ideal for budding republicans, democrats, and independents. The competition is fierce, but luckily, you’ve got a killer campaign manager on your side. With Max’s help, you’ll conquer all the steps of running for office and winning votes, including advertisements, endorsements, campaign speeches, and more. Along the way, you’ll learn more essential skills for thriving in middle school, including making a viral video, trading your lunch in the school cafeteria, and putting a positive spin on any situation. Neil Swaab once again combines comics, kid-friendly humor, and direct-address narrative perfect for reluctant readers in an innovative format reminiscent of video games that is “sure to hit the mark with middle schoolers in the trenches” (Publishers Weekly) and with fans of the Big Nate and Terrible Two series.
