It may be regarded as the successor to the Joint Directory of the Scientific Societies of Washington, which first appeared in 1889, and annually thereafter till 1898. As a basis for its compilation, circulars asking for data were mailed to the members, accompanied by postal cards for returns. It has been compiled from these returns, so far as they were received in time for use. A copy is mailed to each person whose name appears in it.
