Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directory and Ceremonial of the Office: For the Religious of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd of Angers The Divine Office is a vocal and public prayer, composed of all that is most remarkable and instructive in the Books of Holy Scripture, in the writings of the Fathers of the Church, and in the Lives of the Saints. The Church orders that it should be recited at certain hours of the day and night, in the name of the whole body of the faithful, by those who are specially set apart for this duty. 1. To give to God the honour which is due to Him. 2. To thank Him for all the benefits we continually receive from His infinite goodness. 3. To very humbly ask pardon for our sins. 4. To implore His divine assistance and His infinite mercy. The better to understand this definition, it must be remarked that there are two kinds of prayer, one public, the other private; private prayer is that which the faithful make according to their devotion, when they pray mentally or vocally, saying the prayers that their particular devotion inspires; public prayer is that which is made for and in the name of the Church, by those who are required by their state to recite the Divine Office in the words she has expressly ordained; and thus in whatever manner Religious in the Orders established by the Church, recite their Breviary or Office, whether in public or private, their prayer is always public, because it is ordered by the Church, and made in her name.
