Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper outlines crop improvement, strategic agronomy, and natural resource management research concerns central to CIMMYT¦s mission and which models can help address. Authors also discuss related issues, including model documentation and data management. Although CIMMYT has little comparative advantage in model development per se, the center has much to contribute to others' development and refinement efforts, to the availability of quality data, and to the promotion of models and training in their use, and active participation in these areas will ultimately result in better models for CIMMYT's own aims.

Practical applications have occurred in the areas of decision tools for irrigation studies and pest management. However, there is potential to increase its applied use. This book reviews progress in crop-soil simulation modelling and assesses its application to agriculture in developing countries. It is based on work sponsored by the Natural Resources Systems Programme of the UK Department for International Development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Globalization of Wheat, Marci R. Baranski explores Norman Borlaug’s complicated legacy as godfather of the Green Revolution. Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his role in fighting global hunger, Borlaug, an American agricultural scientist and plant breeder who worked for the Rockefeller Foundation, left a legacy that divides opinions even today. His high-yielding dwarf wheat varieties, known as miracle seeds, effectively doubled and tripled crop yields across the globe, from Kenya to India and Argentina to Mexico due to their wide adaptation. But these modern seeds also required expensive chemical fertilizers and irrigation, both of which were only available to wealthier farmers. Baranski argues that Borlaug’s new technologies ultimately privileged wealthier farmers, despite assurances to politicians that these new crops would thrive in diverse geographies and benefit all farmers. As large-scale monocultures replaced traditional farming practices, these changes were codified into the Indian wheat research system, thus limiting attention to traditional practices and marginal environments. In the shadow of this legacy, and in the face of accelerating climate change, Baranski brings new light to Borlaug’s role in a controversial concept in agricultural science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global warming has led to climate change which in turn has led to frequent occurrence of floods, droughts, and cold and heat waves, affecting the productivity of food grain in a large measure. This book studies the effects of regional climate change on the agriculture sector in different states of India. The book also discusses the impact of global warming on the agriculture sector across the world and describes in particular how climate change/variability is affecting rainfall, temperature and land in various states of India. It also suggests adaptation techniques which can be evolved to neutralize the adverse effects of climate change. Besides, the text explains the need for weather risk management, agromet advisory services, weather insurance, and the principles and practices of integrated watershed management through a consortium of approaches for mitigating the adverse impact of climate change in the semi-arid tropics. This book, with contributions from experts in the field and edited by academics who are authority on the subject, should prove to be extremely useful to undergraduate and postgraduate students of Agriculture, planners, policy makers and administrators.
