Book Synopsis Romanticism and Methodism by : Helen Boyles
Download or read book Romanticism and Methodism written by Helen Boyles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the intense relationship between Romantic literature and Methodism, Helen Boyles argues that writers from both movements display an ambivalent attitude towards the expression of deep emotional and spiritual experience. Boyles takes up the disparaging characterization of William Wordsworth and other Romantic poets as 'Methodistical,' showing how this criticism was rooted in a suspicion of the 'enthusiasm' with which the Methodist movement was negatively identified. Historically, enthusiasm has generated hostility and embarrassment, a legacy that Boyles suggests provoked concerted efforts by Romantic poets such as Wordsworth and the Methodist leaders John and Charles Wesley to cleanse it of its derogatory associations. While they distanced themselves from enthusiasm's dangerous and hysterical manifestations, writers and religious leaders also identified with the precepts and inspiration of a language and religion of the heart. Boyles's analysis encompasses a range of literary genres from the Methodist sermon and hymn, to literary biography, critical review, lyric and epic poem. Balancing analysis of creative content with a consideration of its critical reception, she offers readers a detailed analysis of Wordsworth's relationship to popular evangelism within a analytical framework that incorporates Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, and William Hazlitt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worship even more than theology may be the key to a true understanding of the Church's history, for through it people express their interpretation of theology and religion. In this third volume (chronologically) of a planned several-volume series, Professor Davies traces liturgy’s relationship to music, literature, and architecture; studies the effects of philosophical, social, and theological movements (18th century Rationalism, the Oxford Movement, the Evangelical Revival); and describes the techniques of such popular preachers and teachers as Whitefield and Wesley. There are chapters on Anglican, Congregational, Baptist, Presbyterian, Quaker, and Unitarian worship, forming a rich portrait of the varieties of Christian worship in England. For nearly 40 years he has preached in small membership churches and taught others who serve in them. Book Synopsis Christly Gestures by : Brett Webb-Mitchell
Download or read book Christly Gestures written by Brett Webb-Mitchell and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church is not only the central place of Christian worship but also a place of faith-filled education. Christly Gestures reframes the very meaning of religious education, exploring what the form and content of Christian learning would look like if local churches truly saw themselves as the body of Christ. Author Brett Webb-Mitchell begins with the writings of Paul, using them to clarify the biblical image of Christ's body as the community of believers. Taking this powerful analogy to heart, he suggests that Christian education must not only nurture the minds and spiritual lives of church members but also educate their bodies into the "Christly gestures" - performing acts of faith that imitate Jesus and embody the gospel in daily life. In the quest for a richer, more relevant understanding of Christian education, Webb-Mitchell provides meaningful answers to questions concerning the purpose, context, ways, and means of educating Christians today.
