Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A better understanding of the complex behavior of masonry structures is necessary to embrace the more appropriate concept of ultimate strength design. Owing to the prohibitive cost of full-scale testing of masonry systems, a more economical method utilizing direct modeling techniques is proposed. It is the objective of this study to evaluate the use of direct modeling of ungrouted and grouted block masonry under shear and in-plane tension. A total of 62 quarter-scale model shear and tension specimens were tested, and the results were compared with similar prototype test results. The study includes the effect of mortar strength, grout strength, and load orientation on the assemblage mode of failure and ultimate strength. Correlations between model and prototype results are performed. Excellent correlations were obtained for mode of failure and the overall effects of different parameters. It is concluded that direct modeling is feasible and is capable of predicting the behavior of masonry. Deviations from prototype strength results were observed that are attributed to size effect of aggregate, imperfections in unit geometry, and higher strength values of model blocks.

Book excerpt: Structural Modeling and Experimental Techniques presents a current treatment of structural modeling for applications in design, research, education, and product development. Providing numerous case studies throughout, the book emphasizes modeling the behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete and masonry structures. Structural Modeling and Experimental Techniques: Concentrates on the modeling of the true inelastic behavior of structures Provides case histories detailing applications of the modeling techniques to real structures Discusses the historical background of model analysis and similitude principles governing the design, testing, and interpretation of models Evaluates the limitations and benefits of elastic models Analyzes materials for reinforced concrete masonry and steel models Assesses the critical nature of scale effects of model testing Describes selected laboratory techniques and loading methods Contains material on errors as well as the accuracy and reliability of physical modeling Examines dynamic similitude and modeling techniques for studying dynamic loading of structures Covers actual applications of structural modeling This book serves students in model analysis and experimental methods, professionals manufacturing and testing structural models, as well as professionals testing large or full-scale structures - since the instrumentation techniques and overall approaches for testing large structures are very similar to those used in small-scale modeling work.

Due to the prohibitive cost of full scale testing of masonry systems, a more economical method utilizing direct modeling techniques is proposed. It is the objective of this study to evaluate the use of direct modeling of ungrouted and grouted concrete block masonry under axial compression. A total of 49 quarter-scale block prisms were tested under axial compression. Correlations between model results and available prototype tests are performed. The study includes the effects of mortar strength, grout strength, height-to-thickness ratio, number of courses, and bond type on prism compressive strength. Excellent correlations were obtained for mode of failure and moduli of elasticity. It is concluded that direct modeling is feasible and is capable of predicting the behavior of masonry. Deviations from prototype strength results were observed which are attributed to size effect of aggregate and imperfections in geometry of the model blocks.

Book excerpt: In order to justify the feasibility of small-scale concrete masonry modeling technique for the construction of the 1/3-scale masonry test building, model masonry materials and assemblages performance related to nominal full-scale concrete masonry tests must be clearly established. This will be accomplished by conducting a suite of material tests (block units, mortar, grout, and reinforcing steel), assemblage tests (axial compression prism, bed-joint shear (cross specimens), diagonal tension, and flexural tension), and component tests (out-of-plane and in-plane walls) using both full-scale and reduced scale units. This experimental study is intended to investigate the feasibility of using of 1/3-scale direct modeling techniques of concrete block masonry materials and assemblages under different loading conditions. The methodology and techniques of fabrication 1/3-scale direct models of concrete block masonry components material and masonry assemblages were evaluated. For concrete masonry components material, the strength of block unit, mortar and grout and the stress-strain and ductility characteristics of reinforcement were examined. The behavior of ungrouted and grouted 1/3-scale assemblages were investigated by conducting axial compression, bed-joint shear, diagonal tension and modulus of rupture tests. Direct correlation between the model and prototype test results was performed. Good correlation of failure modes, strength and deformation characteristics was achieved. The experimental results demonstrated that direct modeling techniques applied to the investigation of behavior characteristics of masonry materials and assemblages is effective in understanding the overall behavior of full-scale concrete block masonry.

Sponsored by the Structural Engineering Division of ASCE. This collection contains seven paper on analysis of structural masonry. Various aspects of masonry analysis are covered. Topics include: linear and nonlinear finite element modeling, as well as progressive failure of masonry subjected to in-plane loads where failure may occur only in joints or may involve both bricks and joints; a macroscopic finite element model for masonry (without individual modeling of joints and bricks or blocks) which can handle in-plane and out-of-plane loading including both transverse shear effects and nonlinearity due to cracking; cavity masonry walls subjected to out-of-plane loads; a general failure criterion for the biaxial compressive strength of masonry as well as a design method based on the ultimate strength of masonry walls; reduction in the buckling lengths and corresponding increase in the load carrying capacity of masonry walls due to restraining effects of floor slabs; wall/floor-slab interaction in brick walls that yields load eccentricities and possible capacity reductions; and a 2D-finite element model that can account for shear transfer across wythes in a composite masonry wall.
