Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extension of direct mass spectrometric sampling to inorganic systems at higher pressures offers advantages in the type of species and reactions that can be studied. One method involves an initial expansion as a free jet, which is subsequently collimated into a molecular beam. Knowledge of such free-jet expansions is sufficient to predict the principal phenomena, including mass separation and homogeneous nucleation. A three-stage, differentially pumped sampling system has been applied to the sampling of flames, to the observation of clusters in argon, and to the study of the behavior of Hg and CsCl in Ar and N2 carrier gases. A preliminary consideration of the kinetics of growth of the species Ar2 indicates the collisions between molecules at very low thermal energies and densities are important.

Book excerpt: Fundamentals and Applications of Fourier Transform Mass Spectrometry is the first book to delve into the underlying principles on the topic and their linkage to industrial applications. Drs. Schmitt-Kopplin and Kanawati have brought together a team of leading experts in their respective fields to present this technique from many different perspectives, describing, at length, the pros and cons of FT-ICR and Orbitrap. Numerous examples help researchers decide which instruments to use for their particular scientific problem and which data analysis methods should be applied to get the most out of their data. Covers FT-ICR-MS and Orbitrap’s fundamentals, enhancing researcher knowledge Includes details on ion sources, data processing, chemical analysis and imaging Provides examples across the wide spectrum of applications, including omics, environmental, chemical, pharmaceutical and food analysis

Book Synopsis Importance of the High Pressure Mass Spectrometer Sampling System to Materials Technology by : Paul W. Dimiduk
Download or read book Importance of the High Pressure Mass Spectrometer Sampling System to Materials Technology written by Paul W. Dimiduk and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general concept of a probe system is described that will allow the mass spectrometric analysis of the pressure environments near 1 atmosphere and above which are of current practical interest. Applications include the detection of both the stable and highly unstable gas molecules present in reacting mixtures and determining the vapor species existing over reacting solids in any temperature range. Illustrative examples are given to show some of the kinds of important materials problems whose solutions may be speeded by application of this device. The current development status and the major remaining problems associated with this device are summarized. (Author).

Book Synopsis Molecular Beam Sampling of Unstable Species from High Pressure Systems by : Frank T. Greene
Download or read book Molecular Beam Sampling of Unstable Species from High Pressure Systems written by Frank T. Greene and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique has been developed for the mass spectrometric sampling of high temperature systems at atmospheric pressure and above. The gases to be sampled are expanded as a free jet, which is collimated into a molecular beam and introduced into the ion source of a mass spectrometer. Corrections must be made for two phenomena, mass separation and nucleation, which may accompany this sampling process. It has been possible to quantitatively sample stable products and free radicals from atmospheric and low pressure flames using a water-cooled probe. Condensible species have also been sampled using a probe in thermal equilibrium with the gas. It has not, however, been possible to sample with a cold probe species which form refractory condensed phases. These negative results with condensible species are attributed to interactions of the probe with the gas prior to the expansion. (Author).

Book Synopsis Mass Spectrometer Study of Metal-containing Flames by : Thomas A. Milne
Download or read book Mass Spectrometer Study of Metal-containing Flames written by Thomas A. Milne and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of slightly over six years of research on the direct, mass spectrometric sampling of one atmosphere flames and related high pressure systems are summarized. The empirical development of the sampling system and related problems in detection and data interpretation are outlined. The major phenomena accompanying direct, molecular-beam sampling were found to be: (1) orifice-system interaction, (2) mass separation, (3) nucleation, and (4) influence of internal energy state on fragmentation pattern. Each of these problems has been explored qualitatively and quantitatively. A number of areas of immediate application of direct sampling to practical and scientific problems are listed together with suggestions for future research. (Author).
